Coaching Philosophy
Football at Thomas A. Edison MLC is athlete-centered. The primary role of Eagle Football is to help develop
good people preparing for life both inside and outside of sports, not just good athletes. To best accomplish this,
our young people will have an opportunity to learn goal setting, commitment, discipline, work ethic, and team
work.
- Goal Setting Our goal is for each player to increase their self-esteem and sense of accomplishment
through engaging and mastering sound position technique and overall football fundamentals.
- Commitment With that goal in mind, each player must individually commit themselves through
dedication to the team. This means doing what it takes to become and remain a part of the team. From
the classroom to the football field to the players home, it is expected that each player will do what is
reasonably necessary to participate and contribute.
- Discipline In order to participate and contribute fully to the team, each player must make many daily
decisions based on that commitment. This includes choices regarding nutrition, adequate rest, hydration,
school conduct, earning passing grades, interactions with others (e.g. other students, teachers, and
parents) and maximum mental and physical effort during each practice and game. Is what I am about to
do going to maximize my team participation and contribution or lessen it?, should be the question a player
asks themselves and answers repeatedly throughout any give day. The consistent decision to do what it
takes to maximize participation and contribution, whatever the time and place may be, is the essense of a
disciplined athlete. Every small decision made in the present opens the door to success or failure in the
future.
- Work Ethhic Coach Vince Lombardi once said, The only place success comes before work is in the
dictionary. Nuff said.
- Team Work We win together. We loose together. In between we lift up and lean on each other. We
will do what I cannot. Also, what I do reflects on you and we. For this reason, team work also
demands good sportsmanship and positive behavior both on and off the field of play (e.g. home, the
classroom, the community, etc.)
Together, we will develop good people who believe in themselves to the degree that they can and will set high
goals for themselves and be equipped with the mental toughness to do what it takes to achieve them.
Communication
Your student athlete is important. Should you have any concerns or questions, please let Coach Spiller know.

Physicals
In order to participate on the Eagle Football Team, all potential players MUST obtain a physical evaluation from
a medical doctor. This is non-negotiable. Football will begin after school Tuesday August 29. It is extremely
important that the Edison Coaching Staff has a completed physical for your student athlete before Tuesday
August 29. There are other forms that must be completed and returned as well. All of these forms, including
the physical form, maybe obtained in the School Office or from Coach Spiller or Coach Tharpe.
We have been able to arrange for a medical doctor to be on campus Friday September 1 to offer physicals.
The cost is $10. Potential athletes must have this in hand if they elect to wait until Friday September 1 to get
their physical. Although this is convenient, getting the physical completed and turned in before then is
important. Friday September 1 will be the LAST opportunity for the completion of physicals. Potential athletes
will be ineligible without completed and turned in physicals.
Practice Schedule -
Participation in every scheduled practice is mandatory. Football is not a sometimes or when I feel like it
thing. (Refer to Coaching Philosophy, above.) The schedule below is anticipated. However, we may have to
make adjustments as the season progresses. We will do our best to communicate these changes.
Note: Other than cleats, none of this equipment is mandatory. However, these items have proven useful to
have. Should you decide to purchase any personal equipment, please consult Coach Spiller before you make
your purchase. All equipment must adhere to UIL rules. Also, all personal equipment should be representative
of team policy. Equipment should represent team colors: red, black, and white. Gray is acceptable. No other
colors are authorized.
