SYSTEM TESTS (EVAPORATIVE EMISSION)

NOTE: On Cougar, evaporative emission diagnostic procedures are not available


from manufacturer.

NOTE: Prior to performing any system test, see HOW TO USE SYSTEM TESTS
under SYSTEM TESTS. If instructed to replace Powertrain Control Module
(PCM) after performing a system test, new PCM must be programmed. See
PROGRAMMING PCM.

Perform these tests when instructed during QUICK TEST or if directed here from another article or from
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS. Perform appropriate evaporative emission system
test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS. For
emission-related symptom tests, see EXCESSIVE FUEL ODOR, HISSING SOUND WHEN REMOVING
FUEL CAP or UNABLE TO REFUEL VEHICLE under EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM TESTS in

CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE

Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) and select OUTPUT TEST MODE under
ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Select FTP and FTP V PID
from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Select ALL OFF mode. Close canister vent solenoid by
pressing START button on scan tool.

Connect Evaporative Emissions System Leak Tester (134-00056) to EVAP test port. Close canister vent
solenoid. See CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14
in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Monitor system pressure for 2 minutes. EVAP system pressure should not fall below 8
in. H2 O (2 kPa). Repair leaks as necessary. Repeat EVAP system leak test until system pressure remains
more than 8 in. H2 O (2 kPa) after 2 minutes.

EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE

NOTE: The following procedure is designed to execute and complete


EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE and to clear
DTC P1000, inspection and maintenance (I/M) readiness code. When ambient
air temperature is less than 40F (4.4C), or more than 100F (37.8C), or
altitude is above 8000 feet, EVAP monitor will not run. If DTC P1000 must be
cleared in these conditions, PCM must detect them once (twice on some
applications) before EVAP monitor can be by-passed and DTC P1000
cleared. EVAP by-passing procedure is described in the following drive
cycle.

Drive Cycle Recommendations

1. Most OBD-II monitors will complete more readily using a steady foot driving style during cruise or
acceleration modes. Operating throttle in a smooth fashion will minimize time necessary for monitor
completion.
2. Fuel tank level should be between 1/2 and 3/4 full, with 3/4 full being most desirable.
3. Evaporative monitor can only operate during first 30 minutes of engine operation. When executing the
procedure for this monitor, stay in part throttle mode and drive in a smooth fashion to minimize fuel
slosh.

NOTE: For best results, follow each of the following steps as accurately as possible.

Drive Cycle Preparation

NOTE: This step by-passes engine soak timer and resets OBD-II monitor
status.

4) Install scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Cycle
ignition switch to OFF position, then back to ON position. Using scan tool, select appropriate vehicle
and engine qualifier. Clear all DTCs and perform PCM RESET PROCEDURE under CLEARING
CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
5) Using scan tool, access and monitor ECT, EVAPDC, FLI (if available), and TP MODE PIDs from
PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu, press "Trigger" to select each PID, then press "Start".
6) Start engine and allow to idle. DO NOT allow ignition switch to return to OFF position.

Preparation For Monitor Entry

WARNING: Strict observance of posted speed limits and attention to driving


conditions are mandatory when proceeding through drive cycle.

NOTE: This step allows engine warm-up and provides Intake Air Temperature
(IAT) input to PCM.

7) Allow engine to idle for 15 seconds. Drive vehicle at 40 MPH until ECT PID is at least 170F
(76.7C).
8) If IAT PID is more than 40F (4.4C) and less than 100F (37.8C), go to next step. If not, continue
with following steps, but note that step 13) EVAP Monitor By-pass portion of drive cycle will be
required to by-pass EVAP monitor and clear DTC P1000.

NOTE: This step executes Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) monitor.

9) Drive vehicle at 40 MPH for 60 seconds.

NOTE: This step executes EVAP monitor if IAT is more than 40F (4.4C) and
less than 100F (37.8C).

NOTE: To initiate monitor, TP MODE should equal PT, EVAPDC must be more
than 75 percent, and FLI must be 15-85 percent.

NOTE: Avoid sharp turns and hills.

10) Drive vehicle at 45-65 MPH for 10 minutes.

NOTE: This step executes ISC portion of Secondary Air/CCM.

11) Bring vehicle to a stop. Allow engine to idle with transmission in Drive (A/T) or Neutral (M/T)
for two minutes.

Pending DTC & EVAP Monitor By-Pass Check

NOTE: This determines if a pending DTC is preventing the clearing of DTC


P1000.

NOTE: If EVAP monitor is not complete and IAT was less than 40F (4.4C) or
more than 100F (37.8C) temperature range in step 8) , or altitude is
above 8000 feet, step 13) EVAP Monitor By-pass must be performed.

12) Using scan tool, check for pending DTCs. Service pending DTCs as necessary. Rerun any
incomplete monitor.

EVAP Monitor By-Pass

NOTE: This step allows by-pass counter to increment to two. DO NOT repeat
step 4) .

13) Park vehicle for a minimum of eight hours. Repeat steps 5)-12) .

TEST A: DTC P0442: SMALL LEAK DETECTED IN EVAP SYSTEM

NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all
components and perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION
DRIVE CYCLE. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST procedures to ensure all
EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.

Diagnostic Aids

Perform this test only when directed by QUICK TEST. DTC P0442 will set when EVAP control system
monitor fails when PCM detects one of the following from EVAP system:

Less Than 2.5 in. H2 O (.625 kPa) Bleed-Up In 15 Seconds At 75 Percent Fuel Fill
Vapor Generation Limit; More Than 2.5 in. H2 O (.625 kPa) In 120 Seconds

Continental & Focus

1) Visually Inspect Components For Small Leaks

Check for presence of fuel filler cap, but DO NOT tighten or check for proper installation at this time.
Ensure canister vent solenoid is fully seated on EVAP canister. Check EVAP hoses between EVAP
canister and EVAP canister purge valve, EVAP canister and fuel vapor vent valve, and between fuel
vapor control valve tube to fuel tank for cuts or loose connections. Check fuel filler pipe for damage.
If no concerns were found, go to next step. If concern was found, repair or replace component as
necessary and perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE
CYCLE.

2) Check EVAP Test Port For Small System Leaks

Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system does not pass
leak test, go to step 4). If system passes leak test, go to next step.

3) Check For Small Leaks At Fuel Filler Cap & EVAP Test Port

Connect Evaporative Emissions System Leak Tester (134-00056) to EVAP test port. EVAP test port
is located on EVAP canister purge outlet tube near canister purge valve. Close canister vent solenoid.
See CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in.
H2 O (3.48 kPa). While system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to check fuel filler cap
and EVAP test port for leaks.

If fuel filler cap is leaking, replace fuel filler cap. If EVAP test port is leaking and test port is part of
EVAP canister purge valve, replace canister purge valve. If EVAP test port is leaking and test port is
not part of EVAP canister purge valve, replace EVAP test port. If leak is other than fuel filler cap or
EVAP test port, go to next step. If no leak is detected, reinstall fuel filler cap and perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

4) Check For Small Leak With Tester Set At Fill Position

Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to EVAP test port. Close canister vent solenoid. See
CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Set selector on evaporative emissions
system leak tester to FILL position. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Perform EVAPORATIVE
EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system holds pressure between 13.80-14.20 in. H2

O (3.43-3.53 kPa), go to next step. If system does not hold pressure within specification, release
pressure in EVAP system and go to step 6).

5) Check For Small Leaks In Complete EVAP System

Access EVAP canister vent solenoid and fuel tank assembly. Ensure evaporative emissions system
leak tester is connected to EVAP test port. Close canister vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT
SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While
system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to check the following EVAP system locations:
EVAP Return Tube To EVAP Canister Purge Valve
EVAP Canister Purge Valve To EVAP Canister (Canister Vent Solenoid Assembly)
EVAP Canister (Canister Vent Solenoid Assembly To Fuel Tank)
Fuel Filler Cap & Fuel Filler Tube

If leak is detected at any location, repair or replace component as necessary. If no leak is detected at
any location, release pressure from EVAP system and go to next step.

6) Check For Small Leak Between EVAP Return Tube & EVAP Canister

Disconnect EVAP canister purge outlet tube at fuel vapor connection between EVAP canister purge
valve and EVAP canister. Plug opening at EVAP canister purge outlet tube. Connect evaporative
emission system leak tester to EVAP test port. Close canister vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT
SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While
system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to check EVAP system from intake manifold to
plugged end of EVAP canister purge outlet tube. If no leak is detected, go to next step. If leak is
detected, repair or replace component as necessary. Repeat step 6) to verify repair. If leak is no longer
present, go to next step. If leak is still present, repair or replace component as necessary.

7) Check For Small Leak Between EVAP Canister Tube & Fuel Filler Pipe

Connect evaporative emission system leak tester to fuel filler pipe. Plug open end of fuel vapor
connection. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Set selector on evaporative emissions system leak
tester to FILL position. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While system is under
pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to check EVAP canister tube to fuel tank for leaks. Check fuel
tank pressure sensor, fuel vapor control valve, fuel vapor control valve tube and fuel filler pipe. If no
leak is detected, go to next step. If leak is detected, repair or replace component as necessary. Repeat
step 7) to verify repair. If leak is no longer present, go to next step. If leak is still present, repair or
replace component as necessary.

8) Check EVAP System At Fuel Filler Pipe

Reconnect all disconnected fittings. Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK


TEST. If EVAP system passes leak test, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR
VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. If system did not pass, repair or replace component as
necessary. Repeat step 8) to verify repair. Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR
VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

Crown Victoria, Escape, Escort, Grand Marquis & Town Car

1) Visually Inspect Components For Small Leaks

Ensure canister vent solenoid is fully seated on EVAP canister. Check EVAP hoses between EVAP
canister and EVAP canister purge valve, fuel vapor control valve tube and fuel tank, and EVAP
canister and fuel vapor vent valve for cuts or loose connections. Check fuel filler pipe for damage. If
no concerns were found, go to next step. If concern was found, repair or replace component as
necessary and go to next step.

2) Check EVAP Test Port For Small System Leaks

Disconnect and plug EVAP emission return tube at intake manifold. Perform EVAPORATIVE
EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system does not pass leak test, go to step 4). If
system passes leak test, go to next step.

3) Visually Inspect Fuel Filler Cap

Visually inspect fuel filler cap for damage. If fuel filler cap is okay, go to next step. If fuel filler cap is
damaged, replace fuel filler cap and go to next step.

4) Check For Small Leaks At Fuel Filler Cap & EVAP Test Port

Connect Evaporative Emissions System Leak Tester (134-00056) to fuel filler pipe. Close canister
vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP
system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to
check fuel filler cap and EVAP test port for leaks. If a leak is detected, repair or replace components
as necessary and go to next step. If no leak is detected, reinstall fuel filler cap and perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. When system passes, perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

5) Check For Concern Other Than Fuel Filler Cap

Refer to previous test results. If EVAP system did not pass EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM
LEAK TEST performed in step 2), go to next step. If EVAP system passed EVAPORATIVE
EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST performed in step 2), repeat EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS
SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If system now passes leak test, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION
REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

6) Check For Small Leak With Tester Set At Fill Position

Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to EVAP test port. Close canister vent solenoid. See
CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Set selector on evaporative emissions
system leak tester to FILL position. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). If EVAP
system pressure is 13.80-14.20 in. H2 O (3.43-3.53 kPa), go to next step. If system does not hold
pressure within specification, release pressure in EVAP system and go to step 8).

7) Check For Leaks In Complete EVAP System

Ensure evaporative emissions system leak tester is connected to EVAP test port. Close canister vent
solenoid. See CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP
system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to

check the following EVAP system locations:


EVAP Return Tube To EVAP Canister Purge Valve
EVAP Canister Purge Valve To EVAP Canister (Canister Vent Solenoid Assembly)
EVAP Canister (Canister Vent Solenoid Assembly) To Fuel Tank
Fuel Filler Cap & Fuel Filler Tube

If no leak is detected at any location, release pressure from EVAP system and go to next step. If a leak
is detected at any location, repair or replace component as necessary. Perform EVAPORATIVE
EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. When system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE
EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

8) Check For Small Leak Between EVAP Return Tube To Fuel Vapor "T" Fitting

Disconnect EVAP canister purge outlet tube at fuel vapor "T" fitting. Plug opening in EVAP canister
purge outlet tube. Connect evaporative emission system leak tester to EVAP test port. Pressurize
EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector
to check EVAP system from intake manifold to EVAP canister purge outlet tube. If no leak is
detected, go to next step. If leak is detected, repair or replace component as necessary. Repeat step 6)
to verify repair and go to next step.

9) Check For Small Leak Between EVAP Canister & Fuel Filler Pipe

Connect evaporative emission system leak tester to fuel filler pipe. Transfer plug from EVAP canister
purge outlet tube to fuel vapor "T" fitting. Set selector on evaporative emissions system leak tester to
FILL position. Close canister vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING
PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While system is under pressure,
use ultrasonic leak detector to check fuel vapor control valve tube to fuel tank for leaks. Check fuel
tank pressure sensor, fuel vapor control valve tube and fuel filler pipe. Check fuel tank to EVAP
canister (canister vent solenoid). If no leak is detected, go to next step. If any leak is detected, repair
or replace component as necessary and go to next step.

10) Check EVAP System At Fuel Filler Pipe

Reconnect EVAP canister purge outlet tube to fuel vapor "T" fitting. Perform EVAPORATIVE
EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system passes leak test, perform EVAPORATIVE
EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. If EVAP system did not pass leak test,
repeat step 6).

LS & Thunderbird

1) Visually Inspect Components For Small Leaks

Check for presence of fuel filler cap, but DO NOT tighten or check for proper installation at this time.
Ensure canister vent solenoid is fully seated on EVAP canister. Check EVAP hoses between EVAP
canister and EVAP canister purge valve, fuel vapor control valve tube and fuel tank, and EVAP
canister and fuel vapor vent valve for cuts or loose connections. Check fuel filler pipe for damage. If
no concerns were found, go to next step. If concern was found, repair or replace component as
necessary and go to next step.

2) Check At The EVAP Test Port For Small System Leaks

Disconnect and plug EVAP emission return tube at intake manifold. Perform EVAPORATIVE
EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system does not pass leak test, go to step 4). If
system passes leak test, go to next step.

3) Visually Inspect Fuel Filler Cap

Visually inspect fuel filler cap for damage. If fuel filler cap is okay, go to next step. If fuel filler cap is
damaged, replace fuel filler cap and go to next step.

4) Check For Small Leaks At Fuel Filler Cap & EVAP Test Port

Connect Evaporative Emissions System Leak Tester (134-00056) to fuel filler pipe. Close canister
vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP
system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to
check fuel filler cap and EVAP test port for leaks. If a leak is detected, repair or replace components
as necessary and go to next step. If no leak is detected, reinstall fuel filler cap and perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. When system passes, perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

5) Check For Concern Other Than Fuel Filler Cap

Refer to previous test results. If EVAP system did not pass EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM
LEAK TEST performed in step 2), go to next step. If EVAP system passed EVAPORATIVE
EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST performed in step 2), repeat EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS
SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If system now passes leak test, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION
REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

6) Check For Small Leak With Tester Set At Fill Position

Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to EVAP test port. Close canister vent solenoid. See
CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Set selector on evaporative emissions
system leak tester to FILL position. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). If EVAP
system pressure is 13.80-14.20 in. H2 O (3.43-3.53 kPa), go to next step. If system does not hold
pressure within specification, release pressure in EVAP system and go to step 8).

7) Check For Leaks In Complete EVAP System

Ensure evaporative emissions system leak tester is connected to EVAP test port. Close canister vent

8) Check For Small Leak Between EVAP Return Tube To Fuel Vapor Control Valve Tube

Disconnect fuel vapor control valve tube from under vehicle fuel supply and vapor tube assembly.
Plug open end of under vehicle fuel supply and vapor tube assembly. Connect evaporative emission
system leak tester to EVAP test port. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While
system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to check EVAP system from intake manifold to
plugged end of under vehicle fuel supply and vapor tube assembly. If no leak is detected, go to next
step. If leak is detected, repair or replace component as necessary. Repeat step 6) to verify repair and
go to next step.

9) Check For Small Leak Between EVAP Canister & Fuel Filler Pipe

Connect evaporative emission system leak tester to fuel filler pipe. Transfer plug from under vehicle
fuel supply and vapor tube assembly to fuel vapor control valve tube. Set selector on evaporative
emissions system leak tester to FILL position. Close canister vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT
SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While
system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to check fuel vapor control valve tube to fuel
tank for leaks. Check fuel tank pressure sensor, fuel vapor control valve tube and fuel filler pipe.
Check tubes from fuel tank to EVAP canister and to canister vent solenoid. If no leak is detected, go
to next step. If any leak is detected, repair or replace component as necessary and go to next step.

10) Check EVAP System At Fuel Filler Pipe

Reconnect fuel vapor control valve tube to under vehicle fuel supply and vapor tube assembly.
Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system passes leak test,
perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. If EVAP
system did not pass leak test, repeat step 6).

Ranger

1) Visually Inspect Components For Small Leaks

Check for presence of fuel filler cap, but DO NOT tighten or check for proper installation at this time.
Ensure canister vent solenoid is fully seated on EVAP canister. Check EVAP hoses between EVAP
canister and EVAP canister purge valve and EVAP canister and fuel vapor vent valve for cuts or loose
connections. Check fuel filler pipe for damage. If no concerns were found, go to next step. If concern
was found, repair or replace component as necessary and go to next step.

2) Check EVAP Test Port For Small System Leaks

Disconnect and plug EVAP emission return tube at intake manifold. Perform EVAPORATIVE
EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system does not pass leak test, go to step 4). If
system passes leak test, go to next step.

3) Visually Inspect Fuel Filler Cap

Visually inspect fuel filler cap for damage. If fuel filler cap is okay, go to next step. If fuel filler cap is
damaged, replace fuel filler cap and go to next step.

system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to
check fuel filler cap and EVAP test port for leaks. If a leak is detected, repair or replace components
as necessary and go to next step. If no leak is detected, reinstall fuel filler cap and perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. When system passes, perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

5) Check For Concern Other Than Fuel Filler Cap

Refer to previous test results. If EVAP system did not pass EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM
LEAK TEST performed in step 2), go to next step. If EVAP system passed EVAPORATIVE
EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST performed in step 2), repeat EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS
SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If system now passes leak test, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION
REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

6) Check For Small Leak With Tester Set At Fill Position

Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to EVAP test port. Close canister vent solenoid. See
CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Set selector on evaporative emissions
system leak tester to FILL position. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). If EVAP
system pressure is 13.80-14.20 in. H2 O (3.43-3.53 kPa), go to next step. If system does not hold
pressure within specification, release pressure in EVAP system and go to step 8).

7) Check For Leaks In Complete EVAP System

Ensure evaporative emissions system leak tester is connected to EVAP test port. Close canister vent
solenoid. See CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP
system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to
check the following EVAP system locations:
EVAP Return Tube To EVAP Canister Purge Valve
EVAP Canister Purge Valve To EVAP Canister (Canister Vent Solenoid Assembly)
EVAP Canister (Canister Vent Solenoid Assembly) To Fuel Tank
Fuel Filler Cap & Fuel Filler Tube
EVAP Vapor Line Connections At Fuel Tank

If no leak is detected at any location, release pressure from EVAP system and go to next step. If leak
is detected at any location, repair or replace component as necessary. Perform EVAPORATIVE
EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. When system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE
EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

8) Check For Small Leak Between EVAP Return Tube To EVAP Canister

Disconnect fuel tank vapor tube at fuel tank locations and plug openings in tubes. Connect
evaporative emission system leak tester to EVAP test port. Close canister vent solenoid. See
CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2

Connect evaporative emission system leak tester to fuel filler pipe. Plug fuel vapor vent valve ports on
fuel tank. Set selector on evaporative emissions system leak tester to FILL position. Pressurize EVAP
system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to
check fuel tank vapor tube to fuel tank for leaks. Check fuel tank pressure sensor, fuel tank vapor
tube, fuel tank module and connections, fuel tank welded joints and fuel filler pipe. If no leak is
detected, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system passes
leak test, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. If
any leak is detected, repair or replace component as necessary.

Sable & Taurus

1) Visually Inspect Components For Small Leaks

Check for presence of fuel filler cap, but DO NOT tighten or check for proper installation at this time.
Ensure canister vent solenoid is fully seated on EVAP canister. Check EVAP hoses between EVAP
canister and EVAP canister purge valve, fuel vapor control valve tube and fuel tank, and EVAP
canister and fuel vapor vent valve for cuts or loose connections. Check fuel filler pipe for damage. If
no concerns were found, go to next step. If concern was found, repair or replace component as
necessary and go to next step.

2) Check EVAP Test Port For Small System Leaks

Disconnect and plug EVAP emission return tube at intake manifold. Perform EVAPORATIVE
EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system does not pass leak test, go to step 4). If
system passes leak test, go to next step.

3) Visually Inspect Fuel Filler Cap

Visually inspect fuel filler cap for damage. If fuel filler cap is okay, go to next step. If fuel filler cap is
damaged, replace fuel filler cap and go to next step.

Disconnect fuel vapor valve tube from EVAP canister. Plug opening in vapor tube leading to EVAP
canister. Connect evaporative emission system leak tester to EVAP test port. Close canister vent
solenoid. See CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP
system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to
check EVAP system from intake manifold to EVAP canister purge outlet tube. If no leak is detected,
open canister vent solenoid and go to next step. If leak is detected, repair or replace component as
necessary. Repeat step 6) to verify repair and go to next step.

9) Check For Small Leak Between Fuel Vapor Valve Tube & Fuel Filler Pipe

Connect evaporative emission system leak tester to fuel filler pipe. Transfer plug from vapor tube
leading to EVAP canister to fuel vapor valve tube. Set selector on evaporative emissions system leak
tester to FILL position. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While system is under
pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to check fuel tank vapor tube to fuel tank for leaks. Check fuel
tank pressure sensor, fuel vapor valve tube and fuel filler pipe. If no leak is detected, go to next step.
If any leak is detected, repair or replace component as necessary and go to next step.

10) Check EVAP System At Fuel Filler Pipe

REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. If EVAP system did not pass leak test, repeat step 6).

All Others

1) Visually Inspect Components For Small Leaks

Check for presence of fuel filler cap, but DO NOT tighten or check for proper installation at this time.
Ensure canister vent solenoid is fully seated on EVAP canister. Check EVAP hoses between EVAP
canister and EVAP canister purge valve and EVAP canister and fuel vapor vent valve for cuts or loose

was found, repair or replace component as necessary and go to next step.

evaporative emission system leak tester to EVAP test port. Close canister vent solenoid. See
CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2
O (3.48 kPa). While system is under pressure, use ultrasonic leak detector to check EVAP system
from intake manifold to EVAP canister vent solenoid. If no leak is detected, open canister vent
solenoid and go to next step. If leak is detected, repair or replace component as necessary. Repeat step
6) to verify repair and go to next step.

9) Check For Small Leak Between EVAP Canister & Fuel Filler Pipe

Connect evaporative emission system leak tester to fuel filler pipe. Transfer plug from fuel vapor "T"
fitting to fuel tank vapor tube. Set selector on evaporative emissions system leak tester to FILL
position. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). While system is under pressure, use
ultrasonic leak detector to check fuel tank vapor tube to fuel tank for leaks. Check fuel tank pressure
sensor, fuel tank vapor tube and fuel filler pipe. If no leak is detected, go to next step. If any leak is
detected, repair or replace component as necessary and go to next step.

10) Check EVAP System At Fuel Filler Pipe

Reconnect fuel tank vapor tube to fuel vapor "T" fitting. Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS
SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system passes leak test, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION
REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. If EVAP system did not pass leak test, repeat step 6).

TEST B: DTC P0455: MAJOR LEAK OR NO FLOW DETECTED IN EVAP SYSTEM OR DTC
P1443: VERY SMALL OR NO PURGE FLOW DETECTED IN EVAP SYSTEM

NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all
components and perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION
DRIVE CYCLE. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST procedures to ensure all
EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.

Diagnostic Aids

Perform this test only when directed by QUICK TEST. DTC P0455 will be set in PCM when it senses a -7
in. H2 O (-1.74 kPa) drop over 30 seconds. DTC P1443 will be set in PCM when it senses a -7 in. H2 O (-
1.74 kPa) drop over 30 seconds with more than .02 lb. per minute vapor flow.

Continental

1) Check For DTC P0455 Or P1443

If DTC P0455 is present, go to next step. If DTC P0455 is not present, go to step 3).

2) Check For Gross EVAP System Leaks

Check for presence of a fuel filler cap. DO NOT tighten or check for correct installation at this time.
Ensure input port vacuum and EVAP return tube are connected to EVAP canister purge valve. Ensure
canister vent solenoid is properly seated on EVAP canister. Check for damaged fuel tank or fuel filler
pipe. Check for disconnected or cracked fuel vapor hoses or tubes between intake manifold and the
following components:
EVAP Canister Purge Valve
EVAP Canister
Fuel Vapor Vent Valve Assembly
Fuel Vapor Control Valve Tube Assembly

If no concerns are found, go to next step. If a concern was found, repair or replace component as
necessary and perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE
CYCLE.

3) Check For EVAP System Leaks

Disconnect EVAP return tube from intake manifold and plug EVAP return tube. Connect Evaporative
Emissions System Leak Tester (134-00056) to EVAP test port. EVAP test port is located on EVAP
canister purge outlet tube near canister purge valve. Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS
SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system pressure stays more than 8 in. H2 O (1.99 kPa), go to next
step. If EVAP system pressure drops to less than specification, go to step 8).

4) Check For Blockage At EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid Assembly

Turn ignition switch to ON position. Close canister vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT
SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Open
canister vent solenoid. If pressure drops immediately, go to step 6). If pressure does not drop
immediately, go to next step.

5) Check For Blockage Between EVAP Canister Purge Valve & EVAP Canister

Disconnect and plug EVAP canister purge outlet tube from EVAP canister. Pressurize system to 14
in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Remove plug from EVAP canister purge outlet tube. If pressure drops
immediately, perform HISSING SOUND WHEN REMOVING FUEL CAP symptom test under
SYSTEM TESTS (EVAPORATIVE EMISSION) in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT

TESTING article. If pressure does not drop immediately, remove blockage from EVAP canister purge
outlet tube. If necessary, replace EVAP canister purge outlet tube assembly and go to TEST B, step
4).

6) Check For Blockage Between EVAP Test Port & Fuel Tank

Turn ignition switch to ON position. Close canister vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT
SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa).
Depress Schrader valve in EVAP test port. If pressure drops immediately, go to step 14). If pressure
does not drop immediately, go to next step.

7) Check For Blockage Between Fuel Tank & EVAP Canister Tube

Ensure ignition switch is turned to ON position. Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to
fuel filler pipe. Disconnect and plug fuel vapor control valve tube from EVAP canister. Pressurize
system to 26-28 in. H2 O (6.47-6.97 kPa). Remove plug from fuel vapor control valve tube. If
pressure drops immediately, go to step 14). If pressure does not drop immediately, perform HISSING
SOUND WHEN REMOVING FUEL CAP symptom test under SYSTEM TESTS (EVAPORATIVE

8) Check For Large Leak At Fuel Filler Cap

Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to fuel filler pipe and install fuel filler cap. Turn
ignition switch to ON position. Close canister vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT SOLENOID
CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. Using ultrasonic leak detector, slowly
check fuel filler cap. If no leak is detected, go to next step. If leak is detected, replace fuel filler cap
and repeat step 8) to verify repair. When system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION
REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

9) Check For Leak At EVAP Canister & Canister Vent Solenoid

Plug canister vent hose assembly. Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to EVAP test
port. Pressurize system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Using ultrasonic leak detector, slowly check EVAP
canister and canister vent solenoid. If no leak is detected, go to next step. If leak is detected, repair or
replace leaking component as necessary. Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK
TEST. When system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION
DRIVE CYCLE.

10) Check For Leak Between EVAP Test Port & EVAP Canister

Disconnect EVAP canister tube from tube leading to fuel tank and plug EVAP canister side of fitting.
Close canister vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE.
Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to EVAP test port. Pressurize EVAP system to 14
in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Using ultrasonic leak detector, slowly check components from EVAP return tube
to EVAP canister tube. If leak is detected, repair or replace fuel vapor hoses or tubes as necessary and
go to next step. If no leak is detected, go to step 12).

11) Check Repairs Between EVAP Test Port & EVAP Canister

Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If system passes leak test, go to
step 14). If system does not pass leak test, go to next step.

12) Check For Leak From Fuel Tank To EVAP Canister Tube

Remove plug installed in step 10) from EVAP canister side of fitting, and install onto fuel tank side of
fitting. Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to fuel filler pipe. Pressurize system to 26-28
in. H2 O (6.47-6.97 kPa). Using ultrasonic leak detector, slowly check the following components:
Fuel Filler Pipe
Fuel Tank
Fuel Vapor Vent Valve
Fuel Vapor Control Valve
Fuel Vapor Control Valve Tube
Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor
EVAP Canister Tube

If leak is detected, repair or replace component as necessary and go to next step. If a leak is not
detected, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If system passes leak
test, go to step 14).

13) Check Repairs Between Fuel Tank & EVAP Canister

Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS


SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If system passes leak test, go to next step. If system does not pass leak test,
go to step 12).

14) Check For Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor Operation Without Pressure Applied

Ensure battery is fully charged. Disconnect fuel vapor control valve tube from EVAP canister.
Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan
tool, access PCM FTP V PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. If FTP V PID is 2.40-
2.80 volts, go to next step. If FTP V PID is not within specification, replace fuel tank pressure sensor
and repeat step 14) to verify repair.

15) Check Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor With Pressure Applied

Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to fuel filler pipe. Disconnect and plug canister vent
hose assembly. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, access FTP V PID from
PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD men. Pressurize system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Turn ignition
switch to OFF position. If FTP V PID was 4.22-4.90 volts, go to next step. If FTP V PID was not
within specification, discontinue pressurizing EVAP system and return to step 14).

16) Check EVAP Canister Purge Valve Operation With Engine At Idle

Remove plug from canister vent hose assembly and reconnect EVAP return tube to intake manifold.
Start engine and allow to idle. Using scan tool, access EVAPPDC and FTP V PIDs. Allow engine to
stay running until PCM PID EVAPPDC reaches a duty cycle of 40 percent or more. If FTP V PID is
less than 2.6 volts (zero in. H2 O), perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR

VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. If FTP V PID is not as specified, go to next step.

NOTE: At high elevations, intake manifold vacuum reading at input port


vacuum hose and EVAP return tube must be 10 in. Hg (33.77 kPa) or
more.

17) Check For Intake Manifold Vacuum At EVAP Canister Purge Valve
Disconnect input port vacuum hose and EVAP return tube from EVAP canister purge valve. Connect
vacuum gauge to input port vacuum hose and plug open end of EVAP return tube. Start engine and
allow to idle. Record vacuum measurement. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Move vacuum
gauge to EVAP return tube and plug input port vacuum hose. Start engine and allow to idle. Record
vacuum measurement.

If both measurements are 14-20 in. Hg (47.25-67.54 kPa), replace EVAP canister valve. Perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If system passes leak test, perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. If both measurements
are not as specified, check for blockages in input port vacuum hose or EVAP return tube. Check
intake manifold vacuum lines or ports for blockage. Repair or replace components as necessary.
Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM
LEAK TEST.

Focus

1) Check For DTC P0455 Or P1443

If DTC P0455 is present, go to next step. If DTC P0455 is not present, go to step 3).

2) Check For Gross EVAP System Leaks

Check for presence of a fuel filler cap. DO NOT tighten or check for correct installation at this time.
Ensure input port vacuum and EVAP return tube are connected to EVAP canister purge valve. Ensure
canister vent solenoid is properly seated in EVAP canister. Check for disconnected or cracked fuel
vapor hoses or tubes between intake manifold and the following components:
EVAP Canister Purge Valve
EVAP Canister
Fuel Vapor Vent Valve Assembly
Fuel Vapor Valve Tube Assembly

If no concerns are found, go to next step. If a concern was found, repair or replace component as
necessary and perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE
CYCLE.

3) Check For EVAP System Leaks

Disconnect EVAP return tube from intake manifold and plug EVAP return tube. Connect Evaporative
Emissions System Leak Tester (134-00056) to EVAP test port. EVAP test port is located on EVAP
canister purge outlet tube near canister purge valve. Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS
SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system pressure stays more than 8 in. H2 O (1.99 kPa), go to next
step. If EVAP system pressure drops to less than specification, go to step 8).

4) Check For Blockage At EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid Assembly

Turn ignition switch to ON position. Close canister vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT
SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Open
canister vent solenoid. If pressure drops immediately, go to step 6). If pressure does not drop
immediately, go to next step.

5) Check For Blockage Between EVAP Canister Purge Valve & EVAP Canister

Disconnect and plug EVAP canister purge outlet tube from EVAP canister. Pressurize system to 14
in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Remove plug from EVAP canister purge outlet tube. If pressure drops
immediately, perform HISSING SOUND WHEN REMOVING FUEL CAP symptom test under
SYSTEM TESTS (EVAPORATIVE EMISSION) in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT
TESTING article. If pressure does not drop immediately, remove blockage from EVAP canister purge
valve outlet tube. If necessary, replace EVAP canister purge outlet tube assembly and go to TEST A,
step 4).

6) Check For Blockage Between EVAP Test Port & Fuel Tank

Turn ignition switch to ON position. Close canister vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT
SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa).
Remove fuel filler cap. If pressure drops immediately, go to step 14). If pressure does not drop
immediately, go to next step.

7) Check For Blockage Between Fuel Tank & EVAP Canister Tube

Ensure ignition switch is turned to ON position. Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to
fuel filler pipe. Disconnect and plug EVAP canister tube from fuel tank between EVAP canister purge
valve and EVAP canister. Pressurize system to 26-28 in. H2 O (6.47-6.97 kPa). Remove plug from
EVAP canister tube. If pressure drops immediately, replace EVAP canister tube and go to step 14). If
pressure does not drop immediately, perform HISSING SOUND WHEN REMOVING FUEL CAP
symptom test under SYSTEM TESTS (EVAPORATIVE EMISSION) in appropriate SYSTEM &
COMPONENT TESTING article.

8) Check For Large Leak At Fuel Filler Cap

12) Check For Leak From Fuel Tank To EVAP Canister Tube

fitting. Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to fuel filler pipe. Pressurize system to 26-28

Pressurize system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM


LEAK TEST. If system passes leak test, go to next step. If system does not pass leak test, go to step
12).

14) Check For Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor Operation With Fuel Filler Cap Removed

Ensure battery is fully charged. Remove fuel filler cap. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector
(DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, access PCM FTP V PID from
PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. If FTP V PID is 2.40-2.80 volts, go to next step. If FTP V
PID is not within specification, replace fuel tank pressure sensor and repeat step 14) to verify repair.

EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. If DTCs P0455 and
P1443 are not present, replace fuel tank pressure sensor. Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS
SYSTEM LEAK TEST. When system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR
VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

Sable & Taurus

1) Check For DTC P0455 Or P1443

immediately, replace fuel vapor valve tube assembly. Repeat step 5) to verify repair. Perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. When system passes, perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

6) Check For Failed EVAP Canister Purge Valve Or Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor

Fuel Vapor Vent Valve Assembly
Fuel Vapor Control Valve Tube Assembly (If Equipped)

If no concerns are found, go to next step. If a concern was found, repair or replace component as
necessary and go to next step.

3) Check For EVAP System Leaks

Disconnect EVAP return tube from intake manifold and plug EVAP return tube. Connect Evaporative
Emissions System Leak Tester (134-00056) to EVAP test port. EVAP test port is located on EVAP
canister purge valve or on EVAP canister purge outlet tube near EVAP canister purge valve. Perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system pressure stays more than
8 in. H2 O (1.99 kPa), go to next step. If EVAP system pressure drops to less than specification, verify
fuel filler cap is installed correctly. Repair or replace as necessary. Perform EVAPORATIVE
EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. When system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE
EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

4) Check For Blockage Between EVAP Canister Purge Valve & Fuel Vapor "T" Fitting

Turn ignition switch to ON position. Close canister vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT
SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Open
canister vent solenoid. If pressure drops immediately, go to next step. If pressure does not drop
immediately, replace vapor line between canister purge valve and fuel vapor "T" fitting. Perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. When system passes, perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

5) Check For Blockage Between Fuel Filler Pipe & Fuel Vapor "T" Fitting

Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to fuel filler pipe. Pressurize EVAP system to 26-28
in. H2 O (6.47-6.97 kPa). If pressure drops immediately, go to next step. If pressure does not drop
immediately, replace fuel tank vapor line(s). Repeat step 5) to verify repair. Perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. When system passes, perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

6) Check For Failed EVAP Canister Purge Valve Or Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor

If DTC P0455 and/or P1443 are present, replace EVAP canister purge valve. Perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If no leak is detected, perform

EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. If DTCs P0455 and


P1443 are not present, replace fuel tank pressure sensor. Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS
SYSTEM LEAK TEST. When system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR
VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

TEST C: DTC P1450: EXCESSIVE VACUUM DETECTED IN FUEL TANK

NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all
components and perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION
DRIVE CYCLE. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST procedures to ensure all
EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.

Diagnostic Aids

Perform this test only when directed by QUICK TEST. DTC P1450 will be set in PCM when EVAP running
loss monitor detects more than -7.2 in. H2 O (-1.79 kPa) with engine running (but not at idle) for more than
30 seconds.

Continental

1) Check For Visual Cause Of Excessive Fuel Tank Vacuum

Check for kinks or bends in fuel vapor hoses and tubes. Inspect EVAP canister inlet port, canister vent
solenoid filter or outlet hose for contamination or foreign material. Check canister vent solenoid for
blockage or contamination. If any conditions are present, repair, replace or clean as necessary and go
to next step. If no conditions are present, go to next step.

2) Check For Blockage Between EVAP Test Port & EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid

Disconnect and plug EVAP return tube at intake manifold. Plug canister vent solenoid or canister vent
hose. Connect Evaporative Emissions System Leak Tester (134-00056) to EVAP test port. Pressurize
system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Remove plug from canister vent solenoid or canister vent hose. If
pressure drops immediately, go to next step. If pressure does not drop immediately, perform HISSING
SOUND WHEN REMOVING FUEL CAP symptom test under SYSTEM TESTS (EVAPORATIVE
EMISSION) in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.

3) Check Fuel Filler Cap

Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to fuel filler pipe and install fuel filler cap. Turn
ignition switch to ON position. Close canister vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT SOLENOID
CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Using ultrasonic leak
detector, slowly check fuel filler cap and EVAP test port. If a leak is detected, repair or replace
component and repeat step 3) to verify repair. If no leak is detected, go to next step.

4) Check For Blockage Between EVAP Test Port & Fuel Tank

Turn ignition switch to ON position. Close canister vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT
SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa).
Depress Schrader valve at EVAP test port. If pressure drops immediately, go to next step. If pressure
does not drop immediately, perform HISSING SOUND WHEN REMOVING FUEL CAP symptom

5) Check Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor PID With Fuel Filler Cap Removed

Disconnect fuel vapor vent control valve tube from EVAP canister. Connect scan tool to Data Link
Connector (DLC). Ensure fuel filler cap is removed. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan
tool, access PCM FTP V PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Record FTP V PID
value. If FTP V PID is 2.40-2.80 volts, go to next step. If FTP V PID is not as specified, go to TEST
HX, step 21) under SYSTEM TESTS.

6) Check for Stuck Open EVAP Canister Purge Valve Condition At Idle

Open canister vent solenoid. Refer to CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE.
Remove plug from EVAP return tube and reconnect tube to intake manifold. Reinstall fuel filler cap
and ensure it is properly installed. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Select PCM FTP V and
EVAPPDC PIDs from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Start engine and allow to idle.
When EVAPPDC PID is zero, FTP V PID should be less than 2.40 volts. If PCM PID values are as
specified, replace EVAP canister purge valve. Perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM
LEAK TEST. If EVAP system passes leak test, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR
VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. If PCM PID values are not as specified, perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system passes leak test, perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

Escort

1) Check For Visual Cause Of Excessive Fuel Tank Vacuum

Check for kinks or bends in fuel vapor hoses and tubes. Inspect EVAP canister inlet port, canister vent
solenoid filter or outlet hose for contamination or foreign material. Check canister vent solenoid for
blockage or contamination. If any conditions are present, repair, replace or clean as necessary and go
to next step. If no conditions are present, go to next step.

2) Check For Blockage Between EVAP Test Port & EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid

volts, go to next step. If FTP V PID is not as specified, go to TEST HX, step 21) under SYSTEM

EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. If PCM PID values are not as specified,
perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system passes leak test,
perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

Focus

1) Check For Visual Cause Of Excessive Fuel Tank Vacuum

Check for kinks or bends in fuel vapor hoses and tubes. Inspect EVAP canister inlet port, canister vent
solenoid filter or outlet hose for contamination or foreign material. Check canister vent solenoid for
blockage or contamination. If any conditions are present, repair, replace or clean as necessary and go
to next step. If no conditions are present, go to next step.

2) Check For Blockage Between EVAP Test Port & EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid

Disconnect and plug EVAP return tube at intake manifold. Plug canister vent solenoid or canister vent

3) Check Fuel Filler Cap

Connect evaporative emissions system leak tester to fuel filler pipe and install fuel filler cap. Turn
ignition switch to ON position. Close canister vent solenoid. See CANISTER VENT SOLENOID
CLOSING PROCEDURE. Pressurize EVAP system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). Using ultrasonic leak
detector, slowly check fuel filler cap and EVAP test port. If a leak is detected, repair or replace
component and repeat step 3) to verify repair. If no leak is detected, go to next step.

4) Check For Blockage Between EVAP Test Port & Fuel Tank With Fuel Filler Cap Removed

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Ensure fuel
filler cap is removed. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, access PCM FTP V PID
from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Record FTP V PID value. If FTP V PID is 2.40-
2.80 volts, go to next step. If FTP V PID is not as specified, go to TEST HX, step 21) under SYSTEM
TESTS.

6) Check for Stuck Open EVAP Canister Purge Valve Condition At Idle

Open canister vent solenoid. Refer to CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE.

EVAP system passes leak test, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION
DRIVE CYCLE. If PCM PID values are not as specified, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS
SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system passes leak test, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION
REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

LS & Thunderbird

1) Check For Visual Cause Of Excessive Fuel Tank Vacuum

Check for kinks or bends in fuel vapor hoses and tubes. Inspect EVAP canister inlet port and canister
vent solenoid for contamination or foreign material. If any conditions are present, repair, replace or
clean as necessary and go to next step. If no conditions are present, go to next step.

2) Check For Blockage Between EVAP Test Port & EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid

perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system passes leak test,
perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

Sable & Taurus

1) Check For Visual Cause Of Excessive Fuel Tank Vacuum

Check for kinks or bends in fuel vapor hoses and tubes. Inspect EVAP canister inlet port, canister vent
solenoid, EVAP dust separator (if equipped) or outlet hose for contamination or foreign material.
Check canister vent solenoid for blockage or contamination. If any conditions are present, repair,
replace or clean as necessary and go to next step. If no conditions are present, go to next step.

2) Check For Blockage Between EVAP Test Port & EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid

Disconnect and plug EVAP return tube at intake manifold. Connect Evaporative Emissions System
Leak Tester (134-00056) to EVAP test port. Pressurize system to 14 in. H2 O (3.48 kPa). If pressure
drops immediately, go to next step. If pressure does not drop immediately, perform HISSING
SOUND WHEN REMOVING FUEL CAP symptom test under SYSTEM TESTS (EVAPORATIVE

EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST. If EVAP system passes leak test, perform
EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE.

All Others

1) Check For Visual Cause Of Excessive Fuel Tank Vacuum

Check for kinks or bends in fuel vapor hoses and tubes. Inspect EVAP canister inlet port, canister vent
solenoid, EVAP dust separator (if equipped) or outlet hose for contamination or foreign material.
Check canister vent solenoid for blockage or contamination. If any conditions are present, repair,
replace or clean as necessary and go to next step. If no conditions are present, go to next step.

2) Check For Blockage Between EVAP Test Port & EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid
