CIRCLE OF LIFE
Scottish knitwear designer, Kate Davies,
has a new book out this month, with
some gorgeous patterns. Yokes
unravels the story of one of the 20th
centurys most distinctive sweater
styles and one very close to her
heart the circular yoke. Kate takes
you on a trip from Shetland and
Iceland to Canada, Sweden and
back again telling the tales of
yoke trends and traditions that
have changed the shape of
modern knitting. In the book are
11 beautiful yoke patterns to knit
for yourself that feature all sorts of
design elements, from colourwork
and cables to beads and texture.
A Yokes by Kate Davies costs
19.99, and is available from the

own designs and she liked them. It all progressed from

garment or accessory is as important to me

pattern needs to be easy to follow, and the

What defines your knitting style?

Eclectic, yet personal and simple and
striking. I believe that good design is timeless,
and I aim to create classic pieces that will be
long-lasting in their appeal. William Morris

visiting shops and new towns something I
have an excuse to do now that I sell wholesale
to knitting shops. Some of my designs are
influenced by conversations with retailers
about what people want to knit.

Do you have a favourite knitting spot?

Not really; I knit anywhere and everywhere!
If I am visiting my sister in London, I will knit
on the bus or the train. If I am waiting at the
dentist, I will knit. I do have a favourite chair
at home that is ideal for knitting in, though, as
the arms are low, so my elbows can jiggle away
without being inhibited by the furniture!

What sort of thing do you like to listen to

Radio 4 in general, and Womens Hour in

I listen to classical music, such as Mozart or

Which designers and artists inspire you?

Years ago, when I was just starting to design
and wanting to become a proper designer,
I went to a Debbie Bliss trunk show in a town
near to my home. She gave a talk about how
she had got into designing, and she also
came through a back-door route with a bit 4
of luck and lots of hard work. That stopped
me thinking, "I cant do this I dont have a

SWATCH PATTERN
STOCKING STITCH
Row 1 (RS): Knit all stitches.
Row 2 (WS): Purl all stitches.
Rep these 2 rows.
Stocking stitch is the most
commonly used (and
certainly one of the easiest)
knitting stitch patterns, and
produces a lovely even fabric.
Because one side of the
fabric is slightly longer than
the other, stocking stitch
tends to curl at the cast on
and cast off edges.
To avoid this, work a few rows
of garter stitch (knit every
row) at the beginning and
end of your work, and cast
off purlwise on the RS, or
knitwise on the WS.
