structure of a story, including describing
how the beginning introduces the story
and the ending concludes the action.

Daily Lesson Objective: Students will be able to identify and describe the beginning, middle,
and end of a story.
Conditions: Independently
Criteria: Students are expected to receive 3 out of 5 points.

Activity Description of Activities and Setting


Time

1. Focus and Review Over the course of this school year you all have been 3 min
learning about stories and the different parts of stories.
Can anyone give me an example of the things that you
have learned? The teacher will call on three students
and allow them to answer.

2. Statement of Today we are going to be learning about the structure 30 sec.


Objective of a story such as the beginning, middle, and end.

3. Teacher Input All stories have structure that hold it together. Think 15 min
about your day. Is it structured? It says on your schedule
that you have math, science, special, etc. What about
your meals; are they structured? Teacher will allow two
students to answer. Just like our day has structure and
so do our meals--so do our stories. Can you think of
what the structure in a story would be? Allow students
to answer. So the structure in a story is beginning,
middle, and end. (The teacher will write this on the
board.) What do you think the beginning is? (students
will answer) The beginning is when we find out about the
characters or the setting of the story. What is the
middle? (students will answer) The middle is where we
find the problem; what is going on with the characters.
Now we have the end of a story; what happens in the
end? (students will answer) At the end is where we
would see if there was a solution to the problem. Lets
read the first pages of this book to find the elements of a
story (Marley and the Runaway Pumpkin). Now whos
the characters? What is the setting? This will be under
our beginning.

4. Guided Practice "Let's ask a few more questions about the middle and 5 min.
end of the story. It really helps to think about each part
of the story - beginning, middle and end - separately.
Help me with the next big event. What was our problem
in the story? (students will answer) How did the
characters change at the end? (students will answer)
Finally, tell me about the end of the book.. What was the
solution? (Take ideas). How do you know that?"

5. Independent "Now I am going to read, Trick-or-Treat, Smell My Feet! 20 min.


Practice Listen for the story elements because you'll be writing them on
a flipchart."

"Think about what you just hear - the characters, setting,


events, problem and solution."

Students will be given a flip chart where they will need to fill in
beginning, middle, and end.
6. Assessment Formative: The teacher will ask questions throughout the lesson
