Research Project: HSS 374 150 points Due Date: Sunday Nov 20th

A Comparative Analysis of a Social Problem (Child Labor )

In this project, you are expected to compare and contrast an existing social problem in any TWO
countries in the world. Instead of choosing a broad topic (such as womens rights, or environmental
movements) I would encourage you to write on a specific issue that is present in both countries (such
as honor killing or conservation of wildlife).
These are just a few examples. Feel free to write on a social issue that you are interested in.

For this research paper, you will make use of at least FOUR scholarly sources (at least two on each
country). I expect see 8-10 references in total.

Note: See sections below on what is a scholarly source? and What is NOT a scholarly source for
further clarification.

Your paper should include the following sections. Consider the following questions while
writing each section below.

1) Extent/magnitude of the problem: 75 points

a) How pervasive is this problem in each country?
b) What structural factors account for this problem in each country? (globalization,
migration, state policies, political and/or economic context of the region, patriarchy etc.
or any other that have been mentioned in the scholarly sources).

2) Efforts to reduce/eliminate the social problem: 75 points

a) What steps have been taken in these countries to tackle this social problem in each
country? Make sure to mention both governmental initiatives (laws, policies, task forces,
think tanks etc) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved.
b) To what extent these efforts have been successful?
c) Based on your research, predict what this social problem will look like in next ten years
in each country.

Important:

You do not need to attach copies of your four articles to your papers. Be certain, however, to provide
full citations to them.

What is a scholarly source?

A source that is peer reviewed or published in a recognized scholarly source, like a journal or a
university publisher. It can be a book or an article. Such articles or books target specific audience,
typically people in specializing in a particular field.

IMPORTANT: Although review papers are scholarly publications, DO NOT use them for this paper.

You can find many high quality articles from ZU library website.
Go to ZU library page.
Click on library databases.
Academic search Complete (EBSCO Host) and JSTOR are excellent databases to search for social
science articles.

What is NOT a scholarly source?

Textbooks are not considered a scholarly source.
Wikipedia, Encyclopedias, and other online articles intended for general public. If you are not sure
whether the book or the article you have chosen is scholarly or not, ask the instructor.

The paper should be 2500-3000 words.

The paper should have 1" margins all around.
