Mathematics was not available at University College, so he pursued Physics instead. After three years
and not very much work , he was (3) ... a first class honours degree in Natural Science.
With Roger Penrose he showed that Einsteins General Theory of Relativity implied space
and time would have a beginning in the Big Bang and an end in black holes. These results indicated
that it was necessary to unify General Relativity with Quantum Theory, the other great scientific
development of the first half of the 20th Century. One consequence of such unification that he (4)...
was that black holes should not be completely black, but rather should emit radiation and eventually
evaporate and disappear. Another conjectur is that the universe has no edge or boundary in imaginary
time. This would imply that the way the universe began was completely determined by the laws of
science. Professor Hawking (5)... twelve honorary degrees. He was awarded the CBE in 1982, (6) ...
was made a Companion of Honour in 1989.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (J.R.R.Tolkien), best known for his fantasy novels The Hobbit (1937)
and The Lord of The Rings (1954 1955), was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa , to Eglish
parents. His father died when Tolkien was very young and his mother returned to England with her
two sons. She died when Tolkien was 12 and he and his brother were taken in and raised by a local
priest.
Young Tolkien showed early promise as a linguist, inventing his own alphabets and languages. He
won a scholarship to Oxford University, where he studied old and middle Engish and Old Norse. He
also invented two languages he referred to as elvish. Soon after graduating in 1915,Tolkien enlisted
in the British army to fight in world war I. After four months in the trenches he developed an
infection known as tench fever and was sent home for a lengthy recuperation. War, he later said,
deepened and sobered his imagination and stimulated his love of fantasy.
