2.0 BACKGROUND
The School Environmental Club is a brainchild of the former Minister of
Environment and Public Health Sarawak, Yang Berhormat Datuk Amar James Wong
Kim Min. It was realized that the Government needs to play a lead role in encouraging
all schools to form environmental clubs. We used the same concept to set up this club
in IPGM_KBM to encourage all students to play an active part in protecting the
environment.
Promoting education, public awareness and training focuses on the role of
education in environmental decision making especially in IPGM_KBM denizens. In it,
education has been considered critical for promoting sustainable development and
improving the capacity of people to address various environmental and development
issues. It is also critical for achieving environmental and ethical awareness, values and
attitudes, skills and behavior consistent with sustainable development.
In Malaysia, there is a provision in the Environmental Quality Act 1974(Section
3(1)(l) ) “to provide information and education to the public like us in IPGM_KBM
regarding the protection and enhancement of the environment”. The importance of
environmental education is also being emphasised in the Natural Resources and
Environment (Amendment) Ordinance, 1993 or NREO. The provision in Section 5(h) of
NREO has given the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) a clear
mandate “to provide information and education to the public regarding the protection
and enhancement of the environment”.
Environmental Education (EE) is one of the strategies being used to teach
students the important of environmental protection and enhancement towards achieving
sustainable development. It is used in its broadest sense to encompass:
· EE is used to raising awareness;
· To acquire new perspectives, values, knowledge and skills
leading to behavioral change in support of a sustainable environment.
EE is needed to educate students an complex and controversial environmental
issues such as climate change, littering, over-consumption, over-harvesting of our
natural resources, land degradation, ozone layer depletion, generation of waste and
pollution, trade in endangered species etc.
3.0 OBJECTIVE
9.0 CONCLUSION
In summary, an Environmental Club can offer your students a wonderful vehicle
for gaining positive feelings about the environment and their place in it. This, along with
the knowledge and skills that they acquire, can not only give them a tremendous sense
of fulfillment but also foster personal qualities that will stay with them all of their life. So
we hope that you can give an opportunities to us so this Environment Club can be set
up in this Institute Pendidikan Guru Malaysia Kampus Bahasa Melayu Kuala Lumpur.
