    ALTERNATOR DESCRIPTION CONT.

    The rotor is supported in two end frame mounted oil lubricated


    sleeve bearings.
    Oil is pressure fed to the drive end bearing from the main gearbox
    driven oil pump and is part of the common
    engine/gearbox/generator lubrication system.
    The non-drive end bearing is of the oil bath type. The oil used in
    the bearings and the common lubrication system is Mobil Jetoil 2

    Automatic Voltage Regulator: Leroy Somer R630


    Controls the excitation of generator according to its program.
    Exciter Unit
    Brushless type mounted on main rotor shaft.
    Located inboard of the NDE bearing.
    Rectifier bridge of six diodes mounted outboard of the NDE
    bearing.
    AC current induced in the rotating element of the excitation unit is
    converted to a DC current through a rectifier bridge made up of a
    set of six rotating diodes mounted on the end of the rotor shaft.

    AVR and EXCITATION

    The excitation system comprises two assemblies :


    The excitation armature, generating a three-phase current, coupled
    with the three-phase rectifier bridge (comprised of six diodes)
    which supplies the excitation current to the generator revolving
    field. The excitation armature and the rectifier bridge are mounted
    on the generator rotor shaft and are interconnected electrically
    with the revolving field of the machine.
    The excitation field winding (1) is supplied with a d.c. control
    current from the Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR). This
    produces an a.c. current in the excitation armature (2) which is
    transformed to d.c by the rotating diodes (3) and applied as the
    excitation current to the revolving field (4) to increase or decrease
    power output through the machine stator (5).

    GEN. D.E. BEARING TEMP HIGH - Bearing temp. >82C - Lack of oil
    cooling. Check for oil cooler fault including: fan, thermostatic valve;
    insufficient flow; bearing damage.
    GEN. NON D.E.BEARING TEMP HIGH - Bearing temp. >82C - Lack of oil
    cooling. Check level and replenish the oil in the dip ring bearing.
    GENERATOR D.E. VIBRATION HIGH Generator drive end vibration >75m
    peak to peak - bearing failure or rotor out of balance. Check rotor diodes
    and fuses;Check for loose components on rotor; Check bearings for
    damage; If no other cause is found check rotor windings for earth fault.
    GENERATOR N.D.E. VIBRATION HIGH Generator vibration >75m peak
    to peak - peak - bearing failure or rotor out of balance. Check rotor
    diodes and fuses; Check for loose components on rotor; Check bearings

    GENERATOR STATOR TEMP HIGH - Stator temp >135C - Overloading,


    faulty ventilation, electrical fault
    GENERATOR EXIT AIR TEMPERATURE HIGH - Exit air temp >70C
    indicates the temperature of the rotor - Overloading, faulty ventilation,
    electrical fault.
    GENERATOR PANEL MCB - MCB tripped within the Control Panel
    Excess current being drawn due to circuit fault. Identify faulty MCB
    circuit and repair/replace as necessary.

    OVER FREQUENCY- Generator frequency high and breaker closed
    Possible causes include change in power demand (grid fault); increase in
    speed ; fuel valve fault.
    UNDER FREQUENCY - Generator frequency low and breaker closed.
    Possible causes include change in power demand (grid fault); speed
    demand change; fuel valve fault.
    UNDER VOLTAGE - Undervoltage relay trip generator voltage low.
    Possible causes - external short on terminals; grid disturbance; loss of
    excitation; see Generator Manual.
    OVER VOLTAGE - Over Voltage Relay trip . Possible causes include a
    large change in power demand; increase in speed; fuel valve fault;
    generator fault; grid supply fault.
