Spectral Color Conundrum

2 days

Materials

Data Collection

Objective: To recreate the masterminds sample set, #s1-5, using trial and error, to figure out the correct
ratios of liquid volume for the spectral colors necessary to make each 20 mL sample.

Notes:
Document your groups trials T1-T5, and final samples, #s 1-5, below, by typing in the amounts [in
mL] for each spectral color used to make the sample, and inserting a PB image for the final color
outcome.

The max volume for any sample is always 20 mL

The individual spectral colors are always whole amount of mL.
Cover test tube with thumb, flip, and shake to evenly distribute the colors.

#1 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 15-5

#2 - 3 colors Ratio of colors 10-7-3
#3 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 13-7
#4 - 3 colors Ratio of colors 9-7-4
#5 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 18-2

Test Amount of each spectral color used Total amount of liquid volume Color Outcome
Tube [mL] [mL] [PB image]

T1 15 yellow 5 red 20

T2 10 blue 7 purple and 3 green 20

T3 13 green 7 yellow 20

T4 9 purple 7 blue 4 red 20

T5 18 yellow 2 green 20

II. Analyze Results

1. Identify your groups final results for each sample, #s 1-5 below, by filling in each color [in bold]
after the correct ratio listed for that color needed to make the sample. *TBP = colors to be provided

Sample # of Ratio of Colors Groups Results Ratio of Colors Actual Value

2 3 10 [ blue ] : 7 [ purple ] : 3[ green ] [ blue ][ red ]

2. What was your groups overall initial emotional reaction to this challenge?
When we saw the results to this challenge, our initial reaction was very surprised. We thought that
when we completed the colors, they were right because they looked identical to the example test
tubes, but we then realized that many of our answers were incorrect based on the ratio results. Our
only completed an 100% correct test tube was #4. (GMT)

3. How did your group choose to begin, as in, what was the groups initial step?
We chose to begin by each of the group members taking a role. For example I took pictures while
everyone else got supplies. After we set up each of us took one test tube example to work on. We
helped each other but we worked independently to save time. (JM)

4. Based on the Ratios of Colors Actual Value provided by the teacher, how did your group measure up
in terms of accuracy? Support your response comparing your results with the results the teacher
provided.
We got one completely accurate, that was test tube 4, the colors were 9 purple then 7 blue then 4
red and we got those answers. All of the other ones, we got at least one color correct, for example
for test tube 2 we got 10 blue and 3 green, but we mistook purple for red. (JN)

5. Based on your groups experience collecting the data, identify which sample[s] was the easiest for
your group to figure out and explain why.
Sample number four was the easiest for our group to figure out. We all worked on this sample
together because and we had more time, and we had the most time to work on it to perfect the
color. (CM)
6. Based on your groups experience collecting the data, identify which sample[s] was the most difficult
for your group to figure out and explain why.
We thought that test tube 2 was the hardest because our sample looked very close to the example,
but it was hard to tell if our version was correct or not. At the time, we thought it was simply
because the color had not had enough time to disperse, but we now realize(after seeing the results)
that it was because we mistook the purple for the red. (GMT)
