Use the definite article, the: Use no article:


Articles

■ with singular or plural nouns, when you ■ with uncountable nouns or with countable
expect the person who is listening to know nouns in the plural, when you are talking in

Use the indefinite article, a/an:
■ with the words for meals, months and
■ when the other person does not know days of the week:
which person or thing you are talking about ▶ Why don’t you come for dinner?
or when you are not referring to a particular ▶ See you on Tuesday.

▶ He’s got a new bike.

( I haven’t mentioned it before. )  NOTE  Articles are used when you are
▶ Could you bring me a knife? describing a particular meal, month or day:

■ when talking about a type or class
of people or things, such as when you ■ when a school, prison, jail or court

million, etc.: Use a possessive (not an article):

A/an is used only with singular
 NOTE   of the body:
▶ She sprained her ankle and broke her arm.
countable nouns.
▶ I’ve left my phone on the bus.
A is used before a consonant sound, ▶ Where did I leave my car?
an before a vowel sound: ▶ He’s had his hair cut.
▶ a shirt, a house, a euro, a URL
