Wireline Tractor Technology
Abstract
Many a times, during well intervention operations in horizontal well, it is not possible to carry out
the requisite operations such as logging or acid stimulation because of the highly deviated well
geometry which lowers the toolstring due to the effect of gravity leading to undesired
circumstances.
One of the solutions to the above problem is wireline well tractor technology which can be
further classified into electro-mechanical & electro-hydraulic depending upon the mechanism it
works upon. The wireline tractor consist of various arms and wheels located at its sides which is
used for recentering of the tool as it starts touching the walls of the casing or open-hole. It draws
energy from the electrical wireline which is used to deploy it from the surface. The tractor tool
configuration varies from job to job and has has proven to effectively reduce the operating time
minimizing the disturbance of downhole flowing conditions. It has improvements in traction
control due to the modified wheel design and dynamic suspension which has a tractor reversing
capability.Due to this the high tension lgging system has increases maximum POOH strengths.
Hence, making it a viable alternative in situations where Coiled Tubing fails.
Therefore, wireline tractor is a good deployment tool in extended reach horizontal wells where
minimum flow disturbance is required while data monitoring.
