Course code Title Credit hrs

NDET 229 Ultrasonic Testing (I & II) 3
Mohammed Faiz ur Rahman
Designation: Lecturer Course Instructor
Term: 172

1. Last Bulletin Description

The principles of sound wave propagation and attenuation, generation, nature, types and
properties of sound waves and modes will be studied. Testing methods and techniques,
responses from a variety of flaws, equipment and its operating principles to detect flaws by
using different detectors will be taught during the practical sessions. Standard reference blocks
and calibration will be used. Procedure and codes for acceptance and rejection criteria for flaws
will be taught.

2. Textbook
“Ultrasonic Testing Classroom training Book” ASNT, by G. E. Smith

3. References

4. Prerequisites and Co-requisite by Topic

NDE 200

5. Course Objectives

The objectives of this course are to introduce:

a. Give students majoring in nondestructive evaluation a thorough introduction to main
concepts of methods of ultrasonic testing.
b. Make the students aware of ultrasonic testing in detection of internal discontinuities in
the materials.
c. Demonstrate the concepts of acoustic medium, type of equipment and probes are used,
the methods of ultrasonic testing and the techniques to be selected.
d. Welding processes and the types of discontinuities are produced during these
processes. How these discontinuities are detected and reported after inspection.
e. To study material used for the course will be supported by video films and power point
presentation.

8. HBCC Rules and Regulations:

A. Attendance in the theory and Lab class:

Attendance in the class will be strictly observed starting first day of classes. Warning I & II
will be issued to the students before the issuance of DN grade based on his absenteeism.
This will also be reported to Registrar office and DN grade will be immediately reported for
10 unexcused absences (see table below). Further, a DN grade will be immediately
reported if both unexcused and excused absences reach 14) absences. Student will be
responsible for his DN grade based on his absenteeism. It is to be noted that;
i) Attendance in the classes will be taken within five minutes of the beginning of the
class. Student will be marked absent with no excuse if he arrives after 5 minutes in
class late.
ii) DN grade will be given to that student whose absents are exceeding as per the
following table
