Density Determination by Volumetric Method

Objective: To Determine the Density of the Liquid by the Volumetric Method.

Apparatus:
a. Graduated Cylinder, b. Liquid, c. Weighing Balance

Theory:
The density of a liquid is defined as the mass per unit volume. In formula, it is Express as

𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡/9.81
𝐷𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 = =
𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒

The liquid is placed in a graduated cylinder to determine its volume. The weight of the liquid
is then determined by weighing the cylinder with liquid minus the empty cylinder.

Procedure:
1. Weigh the empty graduated cylinder.
2. Place a liquid just enough to fill the graduated cylinder at its desired level.
3. Weigh the graduated cylinder with liquid in it.
4. Read and record the volume of the liquid.
5. Make three trials with different level of fluid in a graduated cylinder.
6. Compute the density by substituting the values of mass and volume.
7. Get the average value of the density of the liquid.
8. Make the necessary conversion of units.
9. Do another exercise of determining density of another liquid by performing the same
procedure done in liquid 1.

Computations:

The liquid used here is ________________

Mass of the empty graduated cylinder __________________kg
Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Average
Mass of the graduated cylinder with liquid (kg)
Mass of liquid (kg)
Volume of liquid (m3)
𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠
Density 𝜌 = (kg/m3)
𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒
