MUSLIM SLAVES
S. M. Dawjee
South African Muslims do not only represent diverse socio-economic categories,
but also diverse national origins. In the 17th century, slaves were brought by the
Dutch East India Company from their colonies in East and West Africa, South
India, Ceylon, and the Malaysian Archipelago to provide labour for the nascent
Dutch colony at the Cape.
These slaves were kept in abject conditions by the Dutch authorities. They often
complained about the unpalatable food they were obliged to consume, lack of
warm clothing during the bitter Cape winters, and the severe punishment for
minor violations of rules. Most slaves were named after the slave traders who
purchased and sold them, or after their owner. This explains why the majority of
Cape Muslims have distinctly Christian surnames, such as Davids, Da Costa, and
Fredericks.
Sheikh Yusuf was a prince, a religious scholar, a mujahid, (freedom fighter) and a
sheikh of the Khalwatiyyah Sufi Order. He met with slaves secretly in their lodges
and at his own home where he initiated them into his tariqah (Sufi order). He is
regarded by some historians as the pioneer of Islam in South Africa. The fact that
elements of Khalwatiyyah practices survive to this day indicates that Sheikh
Yusuf had an abiding impact on the development of Islam at the Cape.
Sheikh Abdullah ibn Qadi Abd al-Salam popularly known as Tuan Guru had a
profound knowledge of Islam and was one of the first prisoners on Robben
Island. On his release he became the first Imam and madrasah teacher at the
first mosque established at the Cape.
An interesting fact of note is that the first Mosque (Dorp Street) in South Africa
was built on land donated by a Muslim woman, Saartjie van de Kaap, who was
born to slave parents
Muslims were generally not allowed to practice their religion freely. George
Foster noted in 1770 that Muslim slaves would meet once a week at a free
slave’s home to chant verses from the Quran. In 1804 the Mardyker slaves were
granted the right to worship publicly because of their participation in a war
against the British. Freedom finally arrived with elation and sadness when
slavery was banned on December 1, 1834. Prior to this the oppressed found
1
solace and Islam radiated around clandestine, candle lit meetings to the
melodious chanting of Quranic verses contained in the Haddad and the Hajah.
2
In the name of Allah Most Mercyful Most beneficient.
In my humble attempt to glorify Allah (SWT) and seek His Mercy and
Pleasure I have assembled extracts from the Holy Quran and from the
authors (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon them) of both the Ratib
Al Haddad and the Hajah.
While the litany of these verses elevates the soul and comforts the heart,
the foundation thereof rests on upholding the basic tenets of Islam.
May Allah forgive us and all who preceded us and all who will succeed us.
May He grant honor to our lives and benefit in our actions.
Ameen

16. They said, “Our Lord knows that we are messengers to you.
17. And our only duty is clear communication.”
18. Theysaid, “We see an evil omen in you; if you do not give up, we will stone
you, and a painful punishment from us will befall you.”
19. Theysaid, “Your evil omen is upon you. Is it because you were reminded?
But you are an extravagant people.”
20. Then a man came running from the remotest part of the city. He said, “O my
people, follow the messengers.
21. Follow those who ask you of no wage, and are themselves guided.
22. “And why should I not worship Him Who created me, and to Whom you will
be returned?
23. Shall I take other gods instead of Him? If the Merciful desires harm for me,
their intercession will not avail me at all, nor will they save me.
24. In that case, I would be completely lost.
25. I have believed in your Lord, so listen to me.”
26. It was said, “Enter Paradise.” He said, “If only my people knew.
27. How my Lord has forgiven me, and made me one of the honored.”
28. After
him, We sent down no hosts from heaven to his people; nor would We
ever send any down.
29. It was just one Cry, and they were stilled.
30. Alas for the servants. No messenger ever came to them, but they ridiculed
him.
31. Have they not considered how many generations We destroyed before them;
and that unto them they will not return?
32. All of them, every single one of them, will be arraigned before Us.
33. And there is a sign for them in the dead land: We give it life, and produce
from it grains from which they eat.
34. AndWe place in it gardens of palm-trees and vines, and cause springs to
gush out of it.
35. That they may eat from its fruits, although their hands did not make it. Will
they not be appreciative?
36. Glorybe to Him who created all the pairs; of what the earth produces, and of
their own selves, and of what they do not know.
18
37. Another sign for them is the night: We strip the day out of it—and they are in
darkness.
38. And the sun runs towards its destination. Such is the design of the Almighty,
the All-Knowing.
39. And the moon: We have disposed it in phases, until it returns like the old
twig.
40. The sun is not to overtake the moon, nor is the night to outpace the day.
Each floats in an orbit.
41. Another sign for them is that We carried their offspring in the laden Ark.
42. And We created for them the like of it, in which they ride.
43. If
We will, We can drown them—with no screaming to be heard from them,
nor will they be saved.
44. Except by a mercy from Us, and enjoyment for a while.
45. Yetwhen it is said to them, “Beware of what lies before you, and what lies
behind you, that you may receive mercy.”
46. Yet never came to them a sign of their Lord’s signs, but they turned away
from it.
47. And when it is said to them, “Spend of what God has provided for you,” those
who disbelieve say to those who believe, “Shall we feed someone whom God
could feed, if He so willed? You must be deeply misguided.”
48. And they say, “When will this promise be, if you are truthful?”
49. All they can expect is a single blast, which will seize them while they feud.
50. They will not be able to make a will, nor will they return to their families.
51. The Trumpet will be blown, then behold, they will rush from the tombs to their
Lord.
52. They will say, “Woe to us! Who resurrected us from our resting-place?” This
is what the Most Gracious had promised, and the messengers have spoken the
truth.”
53. It will be but a single scream; and behold, they will all be brought before Us.
54. Onthat Day, no soul will be wronged in the least, and you will be
recompensed only for what you used to do.
55. The inhabitants of Paradise, on that Day, will be happily busy.
56. They and their spouses, in shades, reclining on couches.
19
57. They will have therein fruits. They will have whatever they call for.
58. Peace—a saying from a Most Merciful Lord.
59. But step aside today, you criminals.
60. DidI not covenant with you, O Children of Adam, that you shall not serve the
devil? That he is your sworn enemy?
61. And that you shall serve Me? This is a straight path.
62. He has misled a great multitude of you. Did you not understand?
63. This is Hellfire, which you were promised.
64. Roast in it today, because you persistently disbelieved.
65. On this Day, We will seal their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and
their feet will testify to everything they had done.
66. If We will, We can blind their eyes as they rush towards the path—but how
will they see?
67. Andif We will, We can cripple them in their place; so they can neither move
forward, nor go back.
68. Whomever We grant old age, We reverse his development. Do they not
understand?
69. We did not teach him poetry, nor is it proper for him. It is only a reminder,
and a Clear Quran.
70. That he may warn whoever is alive, and prove the Word against the
faithless.
71. Have they not seen that We created for them, of Our Handiwork, livestock
that they own?
72. And We subdued them for them. Some they ride, and some they eat.
73. And they have in them other benefits, and drinks. Will they not give thanks?
74. Yet
they have taken to themselves gods other than God, that perhaps they
may be helped.
75. They cannot help them, although they are arrayed as troops for them.
76. So let their words not sadden you. We know what they conceal, and what
they reveal.
77. Doesthe human being not consider that We created him from a seed? Yet
he becomes a fierce adversary.
20
78. And he produces arguments against Us, and he forgets his own creation. He
says, “Who will revive the bones when they have decayed?”
79. Say,
“He who initiated them in the first instance will revive them. He has
knowledge of every creation.”
80. He who produced fuel for you from the green trees, with which you kindle a
fire.
81. Is
not He who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like of
them? Certainly. He is the Supreme All-Knowing Creator.
82. His command, when He wills a thing, is to say to it, “Be,” and it comes to be.
83. Soglory be to Him in whose hand is the dominion of everything, and to Him
you will be returned.

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem
27
In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
1. Blessed is He in whose hand is the sovereignty, and Who has power over
everything.
2. Hewho created death and life—to test you—as to which of you is better in
conduct. He is the Almighty, the Forgiving.
3. He who created seven heavens in layers. You see no discrepancy in the
creation of the Compassionate. Look again. Can you see any cracks?
4. Thenlook again, and again, and your sight will return to you dazzled and
exhausted.
5. We have adorned the lower heaven with lanterns, and made them missiles
against the devils; and We have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze.
6. Forthose who reject their Lord, there is the torment of Hell. What an evil
destination!
7. When they are thrown into it, they will hear it roaring, as it seethes.
8. It
almost bursts with fury. Every time a batch is thrown into it, its keepers will
ask them, “Has no warner come to you?”
9. They will say, “Yes, a warner did come to us, but we disbelieved, and said,
‘God did not send down anything; you are very much mistaken.’”
10. Andthey will say, “Had we listened or reasoned, we would not have been
among the inmates of the Blaze.”
11. So they will acknowledge their sins. So away with the inmates of the Blaze.
12. As for those who fear their Lord in secret—for them is forgiveness and a
great reward.
13. Whether you keep your words secret, or declare them—He is Aware of the
inner thoughts.
14. Would He not know, He Who created? He is the Refined, the Expert.
15. It
is He who made the earth manageable for you, so travel its regions, and
eat of His provisions. To Him is the Resurgence.
16. Are
you confident that the One in heaven will not cause the earth to collapse
beneath you as it spins?
17. Or are you confident that the One in Heaven will not unleash against you a
violent storm? Then you will know what My warning is like.
18. Those before them also denied the truth; and how was My disapproval?
28
19. Have they not seen the birds above them, spreading their wings, and folding
them? None holds them except the Compassionate. He is Perceiver of
everything.
20. Or
who is this who is a force for you to protect you against the
Compassionate? The disbelievers are in nothing but delusion.
21. Orwho is this that will provide for you, if He withholds His provision? Yet
they persist in defiance and aversion.
22. Ishe who walks bent on his own design better guided, or he who walks
upright on a straight path?
23. Say, “It is He who produced you; and made for you the hearing, and the
vision, and the organs. But rarely do you give thanks.”
24. Say, “It is He who scattered you on earth, and to Him you will be rounded
up.”
25. And they say, “When will this promise be fulfilled, if you are truthful?”
26. Say, “Knowledge is with God, and I am only a clear warner.”
27. But when they see it approaching, the faces of those who disbelieved will
turn gloomy, and it will be said, “This is what you used to call for.”
28. Say,“Have you considered? Should God make me perish, and those with
me; or else He bestows His mercy on us; who will protect the disbelievers from
an agonizing torment?”
29. Say,
“He is the Compassionate. We have faith in Him, and in Him we trust.
Soon you will know who is in evident error.”
30. Say,“Have you considered? If your water drains away, who will bring you
pure running water?”

God! There is no god except He, the Living, the Everlasting. Neither slumber
overtakes Him, nor sleep. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and
everything on earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His
permission? He knows what is before them, and what is behind them; and they
cannot grasp any of His knowledge, except as He wills. His Throne extends
over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not burden Him.
He is the Most High, the Great.

forgives whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills. God is Able to do all
things.
The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, as did
the believers. They all have believed in God, and His angels, and His scriptures,
and His messengers: “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.”
And they say, “We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord. To you is the
destiny.”
God does not burden any soul beyond its capacity. To its credit is what it earns,
and against it is what it commits. “Our Lord, do not condemn us if we forget or
make a mistake. Our Lord, do not burden us as You have burdened those
before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with more than we have strength to bear;
and pardon us, and forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Lord and
Master, so help us against the disbelieving people.”

Concluding Dua
Al fatigah
Blessed and Holy art Thou, our Creator. O Owner of Magnificence and Honor.
O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present and those who are absent, our
young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whomever of us You cause to live, let
him live in Islam, and whomever of us You cause to die, let him die in (a state of) faith.
Oh Allah forgive me, my parents, My teachers, all muslims men & women.
Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us: For Thou art the All-Hearing, the All-knowing [2:127]
Our Lord! Pour out on us patience and constancy, and take our souls unto thee as Muslims
(who bow to thy will) [7:126]
Our Lord! Bestow on us endurance, make our foothold sure, and give us help against the
disbelieving folk [2:250]
Our Lord! (they say), Let not our hearts deviate now after Thou hast guided us, but grant us
mercy from Thine own Presence; for Thou art the Grantor of bounties without measure [3:8]
Our Lord! We have wronged our own souls: If thou forgive us not and bestow not upon us Thy
Mercy, we shall certainly be lost [7:23]
45
Roedanallah humma ielaikan mardan jameelah (x3)
O Lord, cause me to enter a goodly entrance and cause me to go out a goodly exit,
and grant me from you an authority to assist (me). [17: 80].
Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden Like that which Thou didst lay on those before us
[2:286]
Rabbana wala tuhammilna ma la ta qata lana bihi wa'fu anna waghfir lana
wairhamna anta mawlana fansurna 'alal-qawmil kafireen
Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out our
sins, and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. Thou art our Protector; Help us
against those who stand against faith [2:286]
Oh Allah’s bless our beloved Nabie Muhammad (SWS) and all Prophets who
came before him and all those who sacrificed their lives in the way of La Ila
ha Illalah Muhamadur Rasullulah.
46
Oh Allah bless our beloved parents, our grandparents, our families and
friends and all those who are no longer with us. Give nur in their kabar and
open to them the doors Jannat. Verily they went before us and surely we
are to follow. May your peace and blessing be with them and may the same
be with us upon our arrival.
Oh Allah bless our beloved predecessors who had the courage to uproot
themselves in search of a better life. May we make good on the sacrifices
that they have made.
Oh Allah bless us with a lineage who are God fearing, pious and prosperous
both in this world and the hereafter.
O Allah! grant us the good of this world and the good of the Hereafter. You
are indeed the Most Merciful of all Who show mercy!
O Allah! Give piety to our souls and purity to our conscience. You are indeed
the Master of our souls and the Guardian of our conscience.
O Allah! We ask You for Your love and the love of those whom You love and
let our lives be filled with deeds which You love.
O Allah! Make our beginning good, our living honourable, and our end
successful.
O Allah! we seek refuge in You from a knowledge, which does not benefit,
from a heart, which does not tremble, from the arrogance of an ego, and
from a supplication, which is not accepted.
O Allah! Cover our shame, pacify our fears, and guard us from the
feebleness of old age.
Grant us O Allah! goodness of mind and body, sight, hearing and speech.
O Allah! We seek refuge in You from unbelief and dispair, and from the
punishment of the hereafter.
O Allah! You know our condition. You know what is good for us. Let us
please be pleased with what you have decreed for us.
O Allah! Let us please live with Imaan. Let us die with Imaan. And let us be
raised with Imaan. And on a day when there shall be no shade and verily
there will be such a day – let us please be standing in the Coolness of Your
47
Gaze and grant us a drink from the cup of our beloved Nabie Muhammad
(SWS) that we may never thirst thereafter. And let us enter paradise
through the gate of honour giving our record in front of us and in our right
hand and not in our left hand nor behind us. And let us please be in the
company of the teachers, the witnesses, the righteous and the sincere.
Yaa Ayyuhalla Thee Na Aamanuu Sol Luu A’layhi Wasalli Muu Tasleema
Glorified be your Lord, the Lord of Honour and Power! (He is free) from
what they attribute unto Him! And peace be on the Messengers! And praise
to Allah, Lord of the worlds.[37:180-2]
