Lesson: Chapter opener

Unit Overview
Main Idea (Claim) Summative Assessment
-Time is a measurement concept that can be -Students will take a test at the end of the unit to test
used to tell when activities start and when how much they have learnt from the unit and it will
they end as well as how long they last. be graded.
Temperature is also another measurement
concept that can be used to understand what
the weather is and will be like. God gave us
time to use it well and to be able to worship
Him in all that we do at all times, in addition
God gave us temperature to enjoy it honor
Him in whatever weather situation.

Guiding Questions Objectives (know/understand/do/value)

The student will . . .
- What are the two letter words help to tell us - Be able to recall prior knowledge about
what time of the day it is? writing time to the nearest 5minutes using
- How can we be able to tell how long an the skip counting by 5s strategy.
activity has taken, when it started and when - Be able to recall write time using A.M and
it will end. P.M.
- Which number helps us to be able to tell - Be able to recall telling how much time has
time using minutes and seconds so that we elapsed.
can be able to tell time in hours? - Be able to recall that temperature is the
measure of how hot or cold something is and
measured using a thermometer.

Time Instructional Procedures and Strategies

Beginning the Lesson
- The teacher will capture student’s attention by introducing them to ‘clap once, clap twice
clap three times and so on’.
- Then I will introduce myself to the class after they all settle down and look at me, (my
name, country, hobbies).
15min - The teacher (I) will introduce a class management strategy called traffic light strategy that
I will be using (I will put 3 colors on the board, red, orange and green). When I am in
class and the students hear me say color red, they are expected to keep quiet, when I say
orange it means they just whisper to each other and green means they can talk to each
other and friend.
- I will the introduce the unit I am going to teach for the next 2 weeks (Temperature and
Time) by telling them a personal story about time and temperature.
- Then I will ask the students to tell me about what they think time is and temperature.
- Ask them what they remember about time and temperature.

Developing the Lesson

Lecture
- Skip counting by 5s to find minutes: Have students recalled skip counting 5s by the
multiplication of 5.(page 220)
- Knowing that there are 60min in 1 hour: Ask students, how many minutes are in one
hour? (5*12=60min).(page 220)
- Telling time: Show students the analog clock and ask them what time it is and remind
20min them that A.M shows time from midnight till before noon and P.M shows time from noon
till before midnight.(page 220)
- Finding elapsed time: Remind students that if one hour passes from 7:00A.M, then it is
8:00A.M and 10:30A.M is 30min after 10:00A.M.(page 220)
- Reading numbers on a number line: Have students recall how to read numbers on the
number line. (page 221-22)

Group work
-Students will be asked to turn to their neighbors and discuss quietly (color orange) for 3min what
they have learnt from the lecture.

Closing the Lesson

- Review the lesson by asking students questions;
- How is time before and after midnight shown on a digital watch?
5min - How many minutes are in one hour?
- What multiplication number do we use while reading minutes?
- Draw some clock faces and put certain times and ask students to write what time it is (
pages 221-222)

Formative Assessment Differentiation

- Students will be assessed on how well they - Groups will help students interact with each
answer the questions above in the closing. other especially for those that love sharing
- For further assessment students will take the information.
pre-test on the pages 122-122. - The lecture will be able to help those who
love to listen to the teacher.
- The questions will also help those who prefer
to learn by writing down individual answer.
Resources
- Analog clock
- Markers ( Red, Orange, Green)
- Students workbooks
- Lesson from: Math Focus Singapore by Marshall Cavendish.
