The CirqueCon 2008: Tokyo! Souvenir CD
Produced by Keith Johnson, October, 2008
Graphics by Rich Alford
Cirque Du Soleil Passionates love most all aspects of Cirque shows. They especially
tend to pay particular attention to their shows' music. In many cases it is the timeless
beauty of the melody and the virtuosity of the musicians and singers that first pulls a
viewer into Cirque's magical world and makes them fans for life.
Many fans harbor the fantasy of appearing on a Cirque stage, performing in some
capacity in front of thousands of people. But for most of them it has had to remain a
fantasy. Until now.
The path to the Cirque stage need not depend upon ones ability to bend in half, walk a
tight-wire or scamper across lighting trusses. It can depend on that most universal of
musical instruments, the voice!
In early 2008, as part of its efforts to keep its database of singing talent stocked, Cirque
du Soleil placed a "Casting Call" for singing talent for all of its creations. To help in
their search they placed online a package of musical tracks from Cirque shows that
would present potential Cirque singers with vocal challenges.
"For each piece, you will find the full mix version as a reference and an instrumental
version that you will use to record your interpretation. Please reproduce the melody,
phrasing, style and texture of the songs, staying in the spirit of the song while adding your
own vocal colour and personality. In other words, we do not need to hear how well you
imitate the sound of another voice, but how you make each piece your own while
respecting its essence. ))
"Please record your performance on video (home video quality is good enough) so that we
can see your expressions and movement. Include at least one full body shot. Please
ensure that the lighting is good enough that we see your expressions, and the sound is
good enough that we hear the true quality of your voice. You may also record yourself on
CD, but please do not use any editing programs and correction tools such as Autotune;
also add minimal reverb. ))
The number of audition packages sent to Cirque from hopeful artists is impressive.
Being the premiere circus company it is many artists would love to be employed by
Cirque. Each year, Cirque receives about 4000 demo tapes for its six artistic
disciplines (dancing, acting, singing, musicians, acrobatics and circus arts).
Why, we asked, shouldn't Cirque's biggest fans, its true Passionates, be given the
opportunity to be considered for performing roles? They most certainly should! So
what if the odds are a bit high! Who cares that, of those 4000 demo tapes Cirque
seriously considered only 1900-2000 of those tapes in 2003. And only about half of
those (1000) were extended an invitation to an audition. And of those that auditioned
only 100-200 were hired as artists. The best candidates could be right in our midst!
And so we downloaded the audition kit and specially prepared this two-disk set for you
to practice and audition with! Here you'll find music for both female voices (in the
Mezzo-Soprano, Soprano, and R&B Mezzo-Soprano ranges) and male voices (in the
Tenor and Countertenor ranges). The selections span all of Cirque's creations except
Love, Wintuk, Zaia and Believe.
These tracks are not pristine studio recordings. In some cases they're not even
complete versions of the songs, including only enough for a good demonstration or
challenge for the singer. For the most part they were recorded live, on tour and in
resident show theaters during actual performances. These are often referred to as
"soundboard" recordings because they were recorded straight from the audio mixing
board in the tent or theater with no audience or tent ambiance and no post-production
or careful mixing.
Because of that you can hear muffled audience applause for the acts being showcased
while the music is performed. Sometimes you can hear stray musician noise and
instrument clicking on open microphones. You'll hear an occasional "stray" note.
Some tracks have slight distortion. There is also the occasional "click track," a
metronome that the musicians listen for to keep them in sync that is removed from the
sound before it reaches the audience.
Let none of this keep you from your goal, to create as convincing an Audition for
Cirque as possible! Let's look at a rundown ofthe tracks you'll be singing to.
Remember that the track listing on both CD's is identical. Disk One is the music track
with reference vocals, Disk Two is the music only (for you to use when demonstrating
your talent!).
Mezzo-Soprano - Defined as a female voice in between the soprano and contralto range
that is able to sing roughly between A3 (A below middle C) and A5 (two octaves above
A3). Some mezzos may be able to sing slightly lower or higher.
1. Mirko (2:51)
(Rene Dupere)
From: Alegria
Act: Opening
Singer: Joan Bluteau
Mix byKJ
--The music that epitomizes announcing to the world the beginning of a Cirque du
Soleil show.
--While presented in English on the" Journey of Man" soundtrack this track did not
appear on the original "0" soundtrack and has never been released in its original
"Cirquish". Sung by a fan favorite, Roxane Potvin.
--The original "creation" singers Mathieu and Zara are featured in the original
arrangement of this song from Varekai.
4. Kalimando (4:10)
(Rene Dupere)
From: Mystere
Act: Bungee
Singers: Nathalie Gauvin & Rochelle Collins
--A quiet introduction to Mystere 's bungee act, an example of duet singing. Note
that the vocal version on Disk One is one minute longer than the instrumental on
Disk Two.
=Corteo is well represented in this audition kit. Could it be due to the challenges it
presents a singer, such as in this tune?
6. Intro (4:01)
(Michel Cusson)
From: Macao 2009
Act: unknown
Singer: unknown
=Here is a brand new, first version demo of a song from the proposed second
Cirque Macao show, which may (or may not, depending on what rumors you hear)
debut in 2009.
Soprano - A Soprano is the highest female voice being able to sing roughly between C4
(middle C) and C6 (high C), and possibly higher.
7. II Sogno di Volare (3 :46)
(Rene Dupere)
From: Saltimbanco
Act: Bungee
Singer: Laurence Janot
--This is the only song example from Saltimbanco. A test of a soprano's range.
8. Flight (2:01)
(Rene Dupere)
From: KA
Act: Bird Flight
Singer: Beth Quist
Mix byKJ
--From the "creation" cast, Beth Quist adds highlights to the Bird Flight escape
scene. Though it has a click track, note the absence of the orchestral samples.
R&B Mezzo-Soprano - An interesting singing variation, and a range used in more than
one of Cirques' shows. The range is the same as a standard Mezzo-Soprano but with a
distinctive soul and r&b flavor.
--The opening of Kooza. For those of you with the official soundtrack, note how
similar that studio recording of the song is to this live one, even including the same
spoken word interjections.
--A short example of vocal improvisation sung by another fan favorite, Dessy di
Lauro. Note how close in sound and mix this comes to the official studio
recording.
--Parental Advisory! Naughty language ahead - but just a word or two. A song
that (like much of the original show music) didn't make it onto the "inspired by"
soundtrack. This song that accompanies the "Rose Boy" act originally appeared in
a rougher form on "Foreplay," a CD sampler included with the first edition of the
Zumanity program.
MALE VOICES - Move over ladies! Now it's the men's turn!
--Though at times this may sound out of tune, the singer is actually hitting the
notes. Just not the way you might want him to. <G>
--Another piece not available on the soundtrack CD! From the beginning of the
show.
--A full performance of this song from Dralion, and much like the arrangement on
the soundtrack CD.
Tenor - The highest male voice being able to sing roughly between B2 (2nd B below
middle C) and A4 (A above Middle C), and possibly higher.
--The opening of Corteo, sung in fine form by Mr. Bisson. Listen for the clown
dialog in the background.
--Listen for the noises the musicians and their instruments make when their not
playing.
-.,While this may not be the "best" version available (see the bonus tracks for an
alternative), this version was what was included in the Audition Kit. It is the same
recording as on the soundtrack CD.
--From the show we are here to see - ZED! A brand-new track from veteran
Cirque composer Rene Dupere.
BONUS TRACKS - Our bonus tracks feature more songs for tenor men.
Disc One
22. Worlds Meet (4:35)
(Rene Dupere)
From: ZED
Act: unknown
Singer: Elise Velle & unknown
--Another new track from ZED! Featuring Rene Duperes wife and former Mystere
singer Elise VelIe. Note there is no music-only equivalent to this track on Disk
Two.
Disc Two
23. Let Me Fall (3:35) (Music and Vocal)
(Benoit Jutras / Lyrics by Jim Corcoran)
From: Quidam
Act: Silks
Singer: Mathieu Lavoie
--For those that prefer your "Let Me Fall" in a quieter arrangement, or in the
original Cirquish, here you go!
"You may send us your material electronically in the following formats: MP3, Quick'I'ime

let me fall
(Corcoran/ Jutras)
4:46 min.
Let me fall
Let me climb
There's a moment when fear
and dream must collide
Someone I am
Iswaiting for courage
The one I wont
The one I will become
Will catch me
So let me fall
If I must fall
I won't heed your warnings
I won't hear them
Alii ask
Alii need
Let me open whichever
Door I might open
Let me fall
If I fall
Though the phoenix may
Or may not rise
Someone I am
Iswaiting for my courage
The one I wont
The one I will become
will catch me
So let me fall
If I must fall
I won't heed your warnings
I won't hear
Let me fall
If I fall
There's no reason
To miss this one chance
This perfect moment
Just let me fall
