Pieter Bruegel
Pieter Bruegel was a famous artist from the 1500s. He painted many pictures of life at that time. One of
his most famous paintings is Children’s Games.
6
In the painting, there are more than 200 children doing more than 80 different activities. The children
are playing in a street in a small village and they are all having fun. Some of the boys in the village are
running and jumping. Some of the girls are dancing. Other children are sitting next to a big brown
house. One boy is standing on his head and another boy is climbing a tree. The people in the houses are
all looking at the children.
Children’s Games is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria. There is a lot to see in the
picture and people can look at it for hours.

Rollerblading
In the early 1700s, a man from Holland wanted to skate on dry land. He put wheels on pieces of wood and put the pieces of wood on his
shoes. Then in 1863, James Plimpton from the USA made skates with four wheels – two at the front and two at the back. In 1980, two
brothers from Minnesota, USA decided to make skates to play hockey in the summer. They changed the skates and made them similar
to ice skates, but with wheels. These were rollerblades. Hockey players and skiers began using rollerblades in the summer months and
soon rollerblading was very popular.
10
Rollerblading isn’t easy, but for some people it’s easier than running. Rollerblading is great exercise, too, and is a fun way to get from
place to place. Also, it’s not as expensive as many other sports. You can buy good rollerblades for €75. That’s a lot cheaper than a good
bicycle!

Anne Bonny

the end of the 17th century, and her father was a lawyer. Her parents moved to North America and her
father made a lot of money there. He worried about Anne because she was always in trouble.
Anne married a pirate called James Bonny, but she soon left James for another pirate – Calico Jack
Rackham. Anne and Calico Jack stole a ship and worked as pirates together. Anne wore men’s clothes
and her real identity was a secret. While they were travelling across the ocean, Anne and Calico Jack
often fought other sailors and stole their things. They were very dangerous.
Anne’s life as a criminal ended in 1720. A soldier caught the pirates, and the police put them in prison.
Rackham died in prison. But Anne wasn’t there for long. She returned to North America and lived a
long and comfortable life. Many people never knew about her past.

SPACE RUBBISH
Astronauts were working on the International Space Station 354 kilometres above Earth. Suddenly, they
saw an object in space. It was a piece of rubbish from a satellite and it was travelling very quickly. “It’s
going to hit us!” said one of the astronauts. Fortunately, the rubbish didn’t hit them. But what will happen
the next time?
If rubbish hits the space station, the astronauts will be in danger and it will take years to repair it.
Space rubbish comes from satellites and space shuttles. On Earth, these small pieces
of rubbish aren’t dangerous, but in space they travel at 28,000 kilometres an hour. If
a piece of rubbish hits a space shuttle, it will probably destroy it. The problem is
worse now because there are so many satellites in space. In 2009, two satellites hit
each other and broke into hundreds of pieces. Some of this rubbish will fall to Earth,
but most of it will travel around in space for many years.
Are we going to find a solution to this problem? Engineers are working on it.
They’re designing an enormous magnet to collect all the rubbish. If this doesn’t
work, space travel will be even more dangerous in the future.
