WE USE IT WHEN WE WANT TO...

 To express habits, general truths, repeated actions or unchanging situations, emotions and wishes:
- I smoke (habit); I work in London (unchanging situation); London is a large city (general truth)
 To give instructions or directions:
- You walk for two hundred meters, then you turn left.
 To express fixed arrangements, present or future:
- Your exam starts at 09.00
 To express future time, after some conjunctions: after, when, before, as soon as, until:
- He'll give it to you when you come next Saturday.
THE AUXILIARY VERB DO/DOES
AFFIRMATIVE NEGATIVE INTERROGATIVE
I study English. I do not study French. Do I study Spanish?
You speak Portuguese. You do not speak Mandarin. Do you speak German?
He likes chocolate ice cream. He does not like apple juice. Does he like cheesecake?
She goes to Sunday school. She does not go to the movies often. Does she go to the dentist often?
It hunts during the night. It does not hunt much in the winter. Does it hunt when it’s pregnant?
We fill the tank every other day. We do not fill its plate every day. Do we fill the car with supplies now?
You understand all the variables. You do not understand my reasons. Do you understand your fears?
They cook dinner for an extra person. They do not cook pasta every week. Do they cook dinner in the weekend?

For emphasis, you can add “do” to the affirmative form.


Example: I do like the way her hair moves in the wind.  Emphasizes how much I like…

EXERCISE 1 – STORY TIME!

Stacy is a singer. She loves to sing. She is in a band. She sings in the band.
She is the lead singer. Sometimes she plays the piano.
Chad is Stacy's boyfriend. He is also in the band. He stands next to Stacy.
He plays the electric guitar. Sometimes Chad sings with Stacy.
Dean is Chad and Stacy's friend. He is also in the band. He stands next to
Chad. He plays bass guitar. Dean does not sing. He does not like to sing.
The band practices three times a week. They mostly perform at nightclubs.
Sometimes they sing at weddings. They are a very good band.
