Identify proper and improper fractions, convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice

versa, reduce fractions to lowest terms, and find the prime factorization of a number.

Fractions are parts of a whole.

Numerator = part
Denominator = whole

If the numerator is smaller than the denominator, we call the fraction a proper fraction. If the
numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator, the fraction is an improper fraction.
Improper fractions can be simplified to a whole or mixed number.

1 2 7 3 3 6
Example: , , , , ,
3 5 3 4 2 6

List the proper fractions:

1 2 3
, ,
3 5 4

List the improper fractions:

7 3 6
, ,
3 2 6

Mixed Numbers
A whole number together with a fraction makes a mixed number.

1
Ex: 2 (means 2 + 1
4 )
4

Converting a Mixed Number to an Improper Fraction:

Multiply the denominator times the whole number, then add the numerator (denominator ×
whole number) + numerator. Write the result from step 1 in the numerator and keep the
original denominator.

Examples: Write 4 as an improper fraction.

Converting an Improper Fraction to a Mixed Number:
Think of the fraction as a division problem. The bottom number always goes on the outside of
the long division box. Divide the numerator by the denominator to get the whole number. The
remainder is the new numerator. Keep the original denominator.

Factors
Factors are numbers that can divide evenly into a given number. They are the numbers we
multiply to give a product.

Example: Find all the factors of 28:

1 x 28 = 28
2 x 14 = 28
4 x 7 = 28

1, 2, 4, 7, 14, and 28 are all factors of 28 because they can divide evenly into 28.

Prime Factorization:
A prime factorization of a number is a factorization where every factor is prime. A prime
number has no other factors except 1 and the number itself.
The prime factorization of 12 is 2 ∙ 2 ∙ 3. Typically, we write a number that appears more than
once by using exponents. Since the number 2 appears twice, the prime factorization should be
written as 22 ∙ 3. Note that we only write the PRIME factors in the answer.

The method for finding the prime factorization of number is to use a Factor Tree.

Examples: Find the prime factorization of 18.

2 9

3 3 Solution: 2 ∙ 32

Find the prime factorization of 60.

3 10

2 5
Solution: 22 ∙ 3 ∙ 5

Writing a Fraction in Lowest Terms (Reducing):

A fraction is written in lowest terms (or reduced) if there are no common factors of the
numerator and the denominator.

Method to reduce to lowest terms:

Divide the numerator and denominator by a common factor. Repeat if necessary.

Write the following fraction in lowest terms:

72
80
72 ÷ 8 9
=
80 ÷ 8 10
