Course Description
This course covers following topics; mathematical modeling in civil engineering, accuracy, errors and
propagation of errors, solution methods for solving systems of linear and non-linear equations,
approximation of functions, numerical differentiation and integration, numerical solution of
differential equations. The applications of listed topics are carried out using Matlab.
Course Objective
The objective of this course is to introduce students to the methods, tools and ideas of numerical
computation. The emphasis of the course will be on problem solving using computers to give students
an opportunity to sharpen their skills in programming. A final objective is to familiarize students with
the intelligent use of powerful and versatile system such as Matlab in attacking numerical problems
and obtaining not only numerical but also graphical results.

Computer Usage: There are recitation/laboratory sessions during the semester. Students are
required to use MATLAB in these sessions.

It is important to note that:


 Attendance: According to the university regulations, students must attend at least 70
% of the lecture hours and 80 % of the recitation/laboratory hours. This condition must
also be satisfied to take final examination. Otherwise, the student gets NA (Not
attended) from the course.
 Absence from a quiz, laboratory will result in zero grade.
