Developmental Milestones Collection Form

Child’s Name: K Class: K1B

Date of observation: 8TH April 2015

Activity: Numeracy (Patterning- Recognising, predicting and completing simple

patterns)

Developmental Domain:
Aesthetic and Creative Expression
Language and Literacy
Numeracy
Self and social awareness
Motor skills development
Environmental Awareness

Observation and Interpretation:

The group of children at the Table Toys Centre was

encouraged to use two different coloured unifix cubes
to create a pattern. K formed a row of unifix cubes
with alternating white and yellow (AB pattern). The
teacherhelped to explain what he had done: white,
yellow, white, yellow. The teacher formed an ABB
pattern and asked him to continue for her. He tried
extending the pattern with an AB pattern initially but
the teacher guided him by reminding him several
times, “white, yellow, yellow, white, yellow, yellow,
white, yellow… What is the next colour?” He then
placed the correct colour. When K stacked the wrong
ones, the teacher would read out the colours of the cubes again like before and
he would immediately realized he did not place it accurately. He would looked for
the right colourto continue.

K is observed to be able to create simple repeating patterns such as the AB

pattern but would need more practices and guidance for more complex
patterning.

Future Plan:

 Teacher could show him more examples of complex repeating patterns and
ask him to identify and extend the pattern.
 Provide other opportunities for him to create these complex patterns
such as decorating a photo frame.

Observation and Interpretation:

The group of children at the Table Toys

Centre was encouraged to explore with the
file folder game on “Matching Quantity to
Number and Number Words”. She was able to
read the numerals one to ten and match it
correctly with the number of picture cards.
She was invited again to try to match the
number of manipualtive with the number
words. She was able to recognise “one”, “two”,
“three”, “four”, “five”, “six”, “seven”, “eight”
and the teacher guided her to read “nine” and
“ten” for her to complete the task.

Future Plan:

 Provide her with opportunities to count beyond 10 objects and extend her
learning by requiring her to compare 2 sets of objects and determine
which set has more or less.(How many more? How many less?)
 Provide her with opportunities to play with number words games such as
Snap, Bingo, or in the form of word search. It can start from number
words one to eight and slowly increases her word bank.
