PROFESSIONAL ADJUSTMENT

Definition of Terms

Profession
 calling or occupation in which the members profess to have
acquired special knowledge, by training or by experience or by
both, so that they may guide or advice or serve others in that
special field

Professional Adjustment
 the growth of the whole individual and development of all his
capacities – physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual.
Professional Conduct
 conduct comfortable to the accepted standards of a profession;
behavior expected of a reputable member of a profession

Professional Nurse
 a person who has completed nursing education program and is
licensed in his/her country or state to practice professional nursing

Professional Nursing
 practice of nursing at professional level, within the scope of the
professional services specified by law as constituting practice of
nursing, and predicated on the ideals of service aimed at the
prevention of diseases and conservation and promotion of health
Criteria of Profession

 satisfy an indispensable social need and based on well-
established and socially accepted scientific principles
 demand adequate pre-professional and cultural
training
 demand possession of a body of specialized and
systematized training
 give evidence of needed skills which public does not
possess
 developed a scientific technique thru tested
experience
 require exercise of discretion and judgment as
to time and manner of the performance of duty
 have a group of consciousness designed to
extend scientific knowledge in technical
language
 have sufficient self-impelling power to retain its
members throughout life.
 recognize its obligations to society thru its code
of ethics
Qualifications of a Professional Nurse
 Must have a license to practice nursing in the country
 Must have a BSN
 Must be physically and mentally fit
Personal Qualities and Professional Proficiencies
 Interest and willingness to work and learn with
individuals/groups in a variety of settings
 a warm personality and concern for people
 resourcefulness and creativity as well as a well-balanced
emotional condition
 capacity and ability to work cooperatively with others
 initiative to improve self and service
 competence in performing work through the use of the nursing
process
 skill in decision-making, communicating and relating with others
and being research-oriented
 active participation in issues confronting nurses and nursing
BASIC EDUCATIONAL NURSING PROGRAM
 offers a competency-based community
oriented curriculum to educate future nurse
practitioners to assume their roles and
responsibilities in the Philippine Health Care
System
 aims to prepare nurses for ENTRY level
positions in the country's health care setting
LICENSE
 legal document given by the government that permits a person to offer to
the public his or her skills and knowledge in a particular jurisdiction
 granted by the appropriate authority to applicants or candidates who have
fulfilled certain established requirements
 LICENSURE: the most important tool for legal control and enforcement of
nursing practice

PROFESSIONAL REGULATION COMMISSION


- appropriate authority to administer, implement and enforce the regulatory
policies of government with respect to the regulation and licensing of the
various professions and occupations
REGISTRATION
 recording of names of person who have qualified
under the law to practice their respective profession.
 Shown thru a certificate issued by PRC
 PRIMARY PURPOSE: protect the health of the people
by establishing minimum standards which qualified
practitioners must meet.

 applicant should have resided in the Philippines for at least 3 consecutive
years
 Petition showing reciprocal practice
 BSN curriculum

RATINGS
 general average of at least 75% with a rating of not below 60% in any
subject
 If above 75% but with a subject below 60%, must repeat that subject with a
rating above 75%
 Retake should be within 2 years

Revocation and Suspension of the
Professional License
 Conviction by final judgment of any criminal offense
 Unprofessional and unethical conduct
 Gross incompetence or serious ignorance
 Malpractice or negligence
 Use of fraud, deceit or false statements in obtaining a
certificate of registration
 Violation of RA 9173 and Code of Ethics for nurses
 Practicing profession during suspension
Re-issuance of Revoked License

 may be re-issued after 4 years if:


1. cured, corrected or disappeared cause of revocation
2. proper application and payment of the required fees

Scope of Nursing Practice (ICP's)
 Initiate and perform nursing services in any health
care setting
 Collaborate with other health care providers for the

(conception – old age)

Duties of Nurses

 Utilize the nursing process in providing care


 Undertake nursing and health HR development
training and research
 Teach, guide and supervise student nurses
 Interrelationship or linkage with community resources
and health care team
 Educate individual , family and community
 Strict or duty bound adherence to the Code of Ethics
PROHIBITIONS OF NURSING PRACTICE
 without a certificate of registration/ professional license and
PRC card
 using invalid certificate
 using suspended or revoked certificate or expired or cancelled
permit
 who gives false evidence to board
 falsely poses or advertises or conveys the impression that is RN
 appends BSN, RN without authority
 who as RN, assists illegal practice of a non-qualified person

general nursing service administration, 9 units management
