BIO 12 REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM REVIEW

-Why do the testes descend from the abdominal cavity? (p. 234)

-Can you label a side view of the male reproductive system? (p.234, 237). Can you label a frontal view?
(p. 237)

-Which structures/organs contribute to seminal fluid? (p. 234, 236). What is found within seminal fluid?

-What is semen comprised of? (sperm + seminal fluid, p. 236)

-How do sperm cells have energy to move? What is the energy producing structure in sperm cells? Do
you know the different components of sperm cells? You need to be able to identify these four parts and
identify their function (p. 235)

-Where do sperm cells mature? (p. 235)

-Know the function of LH/FSH in the male reproductive system (p. 237), know where sperm cells are
produced (p.235, 237), and know where testosterone is produced (p. 235, 237)

-What is the function of testosterone? (p. 236). What are secondary sex characteristics in males? (p.236)

-Can you trace the path that sperm takes during ejaculation? (p.235)

-Can you trace the path that sperm takes through the female reproductive tract? (vagina, cervix, uterus,
fallopian tube/oviduct)

-What is the endometrium? (p.242)

-How do birth control pills work? There are high levels of which hormones in birth control pills? Which
hormones do birth control pills specifically inhibit? Why are they taken for 21 days and what event is
triggered at this point? (p.243)

-What hormones influence the development of secondary sex characteristics in females? (p.244)

-What happens to the ruptured follicle after ovulation? (p.241, 242, 245)

-Make sure you know the different phases of the uterine and ovarian cycles. Know which days they
occur and know which hormones are involved.

-What is the function of estrogen? (p. 244)

-What is HCG? What does it do? What is its connection to the corpus luteum? (p. 245)

-Which hormone only functions through a positive feedback loop (p. 245/246)?

-When does pregnancy officially occur? Know the difference between fertilization and implantation.

MAJOR HINTS
-Make sure you know how to label the front view of the female reproductive system (p. 239, p. 240 is also
fair game…)

-Make sure you know how to label a side view of the male reproductive system (the diagrams on p. 235
are fair game…)

-Why would sperm cells have a large supply of mitochondria? Why is there a necessity of high ATP
energy production? What does the acrosome do? What is the role of flagellum?

-What is ovulation (day 14)? Check the diagrams on pages 243 and 244. What hormones are involved in
the peak that signifies ovulation? Why would it make sense for women to know when they are ovulating?

-Can you label the diagrams on pages 243/244? Can you label the peaks and the different hormones
on these diagrams? Can you label the follicle, ovum, corpus luteum??? If you’re not motivated to
study for this test, at the very least please go over diagrams on pages 243/244 and study pages 240-245.

1. Do you know what the LH peak triggers?


2. Can you identify the follicular and luteal phases on page 243? On what days during a typical
cycle, do these phases occur?
3. Do you know where LH/FSH are released from?
4. What are the gonadotropic hormones? Which brain structure are they released from? What is the
function of the gonadotropic hormones? Negative feedback? Positive feedback?
5. What is the corpus luteum? What does it look like? What does it do?
6. Where does the uterine cycle occur? Where does the ovarian cycle occur?
7. Can you label estrogen and progesterone on page 243/244?

Extra tidbits you might be interested to know:

-What is the cervix? How much does it dilate prior to delivery? Why?

-On average pregnancies typically last 40 weeks. However, some babies are delivered at earlier points,
depending on health issues that may arise in the growing fetus or mother. Babies born at earlier points are
called pre-term and may have health issues at birth. Do you know at what point the fetus is considered
full-term?

-How long is the baby referred to as an embryo? When do we start referring to the baby as a fetus?

-Review the material on labour/birth. What hormones are involved? What happens to the uterine muscle?
What “fluid” is released that signifies that labour has officially begun? What is the function of this fluid?

-What are identical twins? How do they form?
