Sam Cooke

1931-1964
Early Life
- Born January 22,1931 in clarksdale, Mississippi
- Had four brothers and three sisters
- Graduated from Wendell Philips high school in 1948
- Was a straight A students and vote most likely to succeed
- Sometimes called father of soul music
- Made 30 hit songs in just 8 years
- Launched his own record label and publishing company
Intro to music
- In the following years he formed a gospel singing group with two of his brothers (called
themselves the singing children)
- At 15 Sam became a lead singer for the famous teenage gospel group “Highway QC’s”
- Four years later he was picked to replace the lead singer for the soul stirrers
- Established a new standard for gospel music with songs such as “Touch The Hem of
His Garment”, “Be With Me Jesus” and “Jesus Wash Away My Troubles”
- In the Fifties and Sixties, Sam Cooke helped invent soul music by merging gospel
sounds with secular themes
- As a teenager, he became lead vocalist of the Soul Stirrers (which later included
Johnnie Taylor)
- By 1951 Cooke was a top gospel artist
Big Break
- Early Gospel music and Ray Charles were both influences on Cooke
- At the height of his fame Sam moved to popular music
- Sam left special records in 1957 to go to keen records where he made a lot of number
one hits such as “You Send Me,” “Win Your Love For Me,” “Everybody Loves To Cha
Cha Cha,” “Only Sixteen” and “(What A) Wonderful World.”
- After the success of the song you send me Sam signed with the William Morse agency,
appeared on the Ed Sullivan show and later performed at New York’s famous
Copacabana in March of 1958.
- He established his own publishing company for his music in 1959 and negotiated an
impressive contract with RCA in 1960
- His later works set the stage for expressions of politics in both soul and rock music.
Sound
- Sam Cooke started as a singer and later moved onto popular music
- For many artist this would be a big jump
- Cooke decided to bring his talents from his earlier music to this music which many
people liked
- Cooke combined the music blending sensuality, spirituality, sophistication and soul all
to pop music
- This allowed him to make many big hits for example “A Change Is Gonna Come”
- This set Sam apart from other artists by being more talented even through switching
their style of music
Making it Big
- Sam’s life didn’t really change after he made it big but what did happen was
that he was shot and killed
- Nobody knows for sure but what they think happened was that when Sam
went to a hotel with a girl he went to the front desk and got shot
- The manager said that it was self defense and that he was being harrassed
- later ruled justifiable homicide.
- Thousands of people went to celebrate the life of this legend
- Ray Charles and Lou Rawls sang at his funeral in Los Angeles

- One very popular song by Sam was “A Change Gonna Come”
- This was a solo song released in 1964 that later won a grammy Hall of Fame
- This song came from the album called Ain’t that good news
- Many Artists made a cover version for this song for instance Aretha Franklin
- This song brings a lot of sad emotions and also has a soothing feeling
- There are many strings in the background and also a more dominant trumpet
- This song talks about how things need to change and if you just hang on than
they will
- This song came to exemplify the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s

Album
- A very popular album by Sam was “Ain’t that good news”
- Two of the top songs from this album are “Ain’t that good news” and “A
Change gonna come”
- This album was released 1964 and was the final album released in his lifetime
- Ain’t that good news was the first material that Cooke had recorded in the six
months following the drowning death of his 18-month-old son Vincent
- This album only reached top 34 on the Billboards chart but many songs in this
album had an impact on society

- Started off with his brothers and sisters singing Gospel music
- Kept moving up and make a bigger name for himself

- Began to make songs for himself
- Later achieved many big lifetime goals
- End
- Died but kept his music going throughout the country
- Moved and influenced many other artists
More Info
- The only sign of Sam being abusive was when the manager of the hotel
claimed that he was be harassed and killed him
- A interesting fact about Sam was that at the time of getting shot he was
wearing only a sports jacket and one shoe which might of scared the manager
a little
