INTRODUCTION
The development work led to following improvements when compared to earlier gear
drives:
o Increased load-handling capacity
o Increased efficiency
o Significantly enhanced accessibility to critical bolted joints
o Reduced maintenance costs
o Reduced vibration levels
o Reduced sound level
The improvements of the new direct gear drive have been reached with following
constructive changes and actions:
o Kumera VLG-gear units have been replaced with tailor-made Moventas
D2(3)PVHFMIXFO-gear units
o V-belt transmission between motor and gearbox HSS have been left out
o Completely new drive racks

MECHANICAL DESIGN
The new direct gear drive is a result of exhaustive development work. In order to
compensate against rising energy and labor costs, the electric motor is now fitted directly to
gear unit resulting as increased efficiency and no belt work.
The completely new tailor-made Moventas D2(3)PVHF40 80MIXFO gear units have been
designed to fulfill following essential requirements:
o Better resistance for bending than in traditional bearing units to raise the
fundamental frequencies of the drive
o Leak-free construction
o Gear and bearing lives must exceed 100 000 hours
o Gear unit must allow non-stop operation for one year period
o Indicators for disturbances in oil pressure, air sealing, and grease sealing
o Tailor-made motor-flange to enable use of tall mid-voltage motors
The new drive racks (RAG-040, RAG-060, and RAG-080) have been designed to achieve
infinite fatigue life in all of the intended applications. Accessibility to critical bolted joints
(rack-bridge, gearbox-rack, and lower shaft-gearbox) is increased from previous gear
drives. In order to further reduce the vibration level of the drive, the bending resistances of
the drive racks have been increased over 200 percents. All of the drive racks include
integrated oil sumps for entire oil volume of the gearbox.
The test work including over-load tests and start-up under full load was done before
releasing the design for worldwide marketing.
