Class I: Systems of this class will detect a leak above or below the liquid level in a double-skin system. They
are inherently safe and will detect a leak before any liquid can enter the environment (i. e. pressure or
vacuum systems).
Class II: Systems of this class will detect a leak above or below the liquid level in a double-skin system with
the possibility of the leak detection liquid leaking into the environment (i. e. liquid monitoring system).
Class III: Systems of this class will detect a leak below the liquid level in a tank or in a pipework system. These
systems are based on liquid and/or vapour sensors located in leakage containment or interstitial
space. A possibility exists of product entering the environment.
Class IV: Systems of this class will detect, to specific levels of probability, specified rates of change of tank
contents (i. e. leakages into or out of the tank). A strong possibility exists that product will enter the
environment in the event of a leak.
Class IV A: Dynamic leak detection systems will by reconciliation also indicate leaks in the connected pipework
Class IV B: Static tank gauge leak detection systems or statistical quiet period leak detection systems will only
indicate leaks from a tank.
Class V: Systems of this class may detect liquid loss in tanks or pipes below the liquid level. Product will enter
the environment before the leak is detected (i. e. sensors in monitoring wells).

Annex B
(informative)
Leak detection systems or their components can be installed in different hazardous areas (zones) or also in non-
hazardous areas. EN 1127-1 specifies methods for the identification of hazardous situations leading to explosion
and the design and construction measures appropriate for the required safety. The definition of zones and
categories and the relation between categories and zones are detailed in this standard. It is the responsibility of the
user to choose the suitable category of the equipment for installation in a particular zone.
If the stored product is a liquid with a flash point below 55 C, equipment installed in certain locations will conform
to one of the categories of equipment defined in EN 1127-1. Table B.1 shows the equipment categories which
typically will be used in certain areas of the system. However, these categories can be varied where prevailing
regulations or other constraints apply.
NOTE 1 For equipment outside the interstitial space reduced requirements could apply, see Table B.1.
NOTE 2 If the interstitial space and/or components of the leak detection system are not chemically resistant to any liquids
with which they can come into contact, there can be a risk of the generation of an explosive atmosphere.
Regardless of these proposals the requirements arising from the potentially explosive atmospheres at the place of
installation should apply.

Initial type testing shall be performed on first application of this standard. Tests previously performed in accordance
with the provisions of this standard (same product, same characteristic(s), test method, sampling procedure,
system of attestation of conformity, etc.) may be taken into account. In addition, initial type testing shall be
performed at the beginning of the production of a new leak detection systems or at the beginning of a new method
of production (where this may affect the stated properties).

of EN 13160–2:2003, but only at (20 ± 5) C.
Test of the tightness of the leak detector at operating pressure and with the intended leak detection media, at which
the following condition shall be fulfilled, see Equations (C.1) and (C.2):
( PPA P1 ) V
1 QLM = (C.1)
t
( PPA P1 ) V

where:
QLM is the allowable leak rate with integrated pressure generator, in Pascal litre per second
QLO is the allowable leak rate without integrated pressure generator, in Pascal litre per second
V is the volume of the leak detector including the connected test volume at the moment of the test
(interconnecting lines, measuring instruments), in litre
For the determination of the handicaps for the test of the tightness the manufacturer shall give either the pressure
value p1 or the test time t.
NOTE If the pressure value p1 is given the equation above provides the test time t at which the pressure may drop to the
value p1. If the test time t is given the equation above provides the pressure value p1, which is the lowest value to which the
operating pressure pPA may drop during the test time.

(AQL) of 4,0 according to ISO 2859-1 on the basis of the inspection level II.
Interstitial space, excluding the interstitial space of leak protecting jackets (EN 13160–7)
After completion of the installation of the jacket the interstitial space shall be subjected to a pressure hold test of
20 kPa during 30 min. The welds shall be checked for eventual leaks with a soap solution. After successful
completion of the pressure hold test a vacuum of -40 kPa shall be established. The vacuum shall never drop below
-13,5 kPa.
23
EN 13160-1:2003 (E)
A sample from production shall be fully tested in accordance with the appropriate test methods as follows:
The above tests shall be repeated whenever there is a change in design or production method, which may have an
effect on any performance requirement.
In order to verify the correct functioning of each sensor produced, subsequent to the initial type testing,
manufacturers shall have in place a routine production test procedure, which shall include at least the following:
calibration records.

marking;
particular conditions applicable to the use of the product, (e. g. provisions for use under certain conditions,
etc.);
name and address of the notified laboratory(ies) (only for products under system 3);
name of, and position held by, the person empowered to sign the declaration on behalf of the manufacturer or
his authorised representative.
The above mentioned declaration shall be presented, if requested, in the official language or languages of the
Member State in which the product is to be used.
ZA.3 CE marking
The CE symbol shall appear on the product. The CE symbol and the following information shall appear on the
packaging and/or on the accompanying commercial documents:
the name or identifying mark and registered address of the producer/supplier, and
the last two digits of the year in which the marking was affixed, and
the product type (e. g. product for leak detection systems), and
