Crown Block
An assembly of sheaves mounted on beams at the top of the
derrick.

International Recommendations

 There shall be no opening between the frame work of


the crown large enough to permit a worker to fall
through.

 Where wood bumper blocks are attached to the


underside of crown block beams, a wire rope safety line
or wire shall be fastened along the beam and attached to the derrick at both
ends.

 When the crown block is to be lubricated, the draw


works shall be shut down.
 Crown protector, such as (a Crown-O-Matic
electro/pneumatic crown saver or anti block system)
shall be installed, properly adjusted, and used on all
drilling and Work over rigs.

Crown block checklist

 Hang off the blocks prior to inspection & isolate the


electrical supply
 for the Drawworks
 Use sheave gauges for sheave profile inspection
 Five-yearly NDT and disassembly as per API RP 86/ISO 13534
 Wobble test with crowbar to check sheaves and bearings

Drawwork
The hoisting mechanism on the rig. Used to lowers or raises the drill stem and bit.

International recommendation

 All driller's console controls shall be clearly identified.


 There shall be an emergency switch at the driller's
console for the shutdown of the rig motors and mud
pumps.
 This switch shall be checked periodically by the electrician
to ensure that it is ready for use.

 All instrumentation at the driller's console, including pit

 level indicator, mud rate return flow, and pump stroke


counter, shall be installed and maintained according to its
manufacturer's specifications.

 All warning alarms shall be kept turned on and noted


daily on the pre-tour checklists.

 Drill pipe or casing shall not be picked up suddenly .

 The driller shall never begin hoisting drill pipe ntil he has assured that the pipe is
latched in the elevator

 The derrick man shall ensure that the elevators are properly
Clamped and locked prior to notify the driller to engage the
load.

 Personnel shall never be permitted to stand in front of


hoisting drums

 maintain the line greasing system in a good condition via


periodical inspection

Draw work checklist
• Last overhaul (API RP 7l section 4.2)

• NDT inspection (brake bands, linkage and equalizer bar)

• Wear brake bands, brake pads and, disc brakes, brake linkage

• Min. 12 wraps on drum (travelling block in lowest position)

Traveling Block
An arrangement of sheaves through which drilling wire is reeve \operating

International Recommendation:-

 Any traveling block hook shall be equipped with a


safety latch .

 Testing and setting procedures are to be performed by


the Driller at the beginning for each 12 hours &
immediately after drill line slip and cut operations

Traveling Block checklist:-

 Hang off the travelling block prior to Inspection,

 Isolate the electric supply of the draw works prior to


maintenance

 NDT inspection and five-yearly disassembly as per API


RP 88

 Wobble test of sheaves using a crow bar

 Measure sheaves using sheave gauges

 Certified hang-off line, pad eye and shackles present


(API RP 9A

 the hang-off lines should be rated for the weight of the


travelling block and the top drive

 Long-term storage in a vertical position

Manual Tongs

Tongs used for make up or break out a pipe from another pipe

 Each Rig tong shall be attached by a wire rope snub line ( wire, clamps &
shackles should be inspected each 6 months via competent third party ).

 Both ends of the snub line shall be secured by the required number of clips,
properly installed, or other equivalent fittings.

 The wire rope and connections on tongs shall by periodically inspected for wear
and broken.

 Tong dies shall be inspected periodically specially before trips

 using proper die removal tools to avoid die shatter after


taking the necessary isolation precautions .

 Use of proper PPE is required.

 Tongs shall be inspected and greased by rig perators


before each trip.

 If Tongs has damage , jaws, or other defects shall be


removed from service

 Tongs shall be inspected via third party each 6 months

 When not in use, tongs shall be hooked back on the rig


floor in such a manner as to present no obstruction to
personnel passing between the tongs and the rotary table.

Power Tongs

A wrench that is used to make up or break out drill pipe,


tubing,or casing.

International Recommendation

 The control device on power tongs shall be secured

 to prevent accidental activation.

 The discharge end of hoses which used on power


tong shall be disconnected before any repair,
replacement

 High pressure lines (hydraulic or air) shall have a


safety pressure relief valve that shall never be set
higher than the manufacturer's specifications for the
working pressure of the lines or valve

Monkey Board

The derrick man's working platform located at a height in

the derrick or mast .

International Recommendation

 Each Monkey board on a rig shall be installed, and


maintained according to the manufacturer's
instructions.

 A fixed ladder for access with anti fall arrestor should


be available .

Stabbing Board
The derrick man's or another company's operator are working at
stabbing board in case running casing & tubing

International Recommendation

 Before casing is to be run, the stabbing board shall be inspected by the


rig mechanic to ensure that the board is in good condition, free from
damage and all safety devices working.

 Every pneumatic or electric powered stabbing


board shall
be equipped with:
(a) An automatic safe brake.
(b) Shock absorber
(c) The safe working load (SWL) marked on

the stabbing.
(d) Upper and lower travel limit switches.
(e) Standard guard rail, intermediate rail, and
toe board .
(f) A bully poster fall protection system
should be installed on the stabbing.

Top Drive

The top drive rotates the drill string without use of a Kelly and rotary table
Also top drive is operated from a control console on the rig floor.

International standard

 Floor men are never to stand behind the tongs on the


opposite side of the snub line while making up the top
drive

 Links must NDT inspected each six months

Mast
A portable derrick capable of being erected as a unit .

 Derricks and masts shall have a permanent


nameplate either attached to the structure or
available at the site indicating the following:

(a) Name of manufacturer.

(b) Model number and serial number.

(c) Load rating with number of lines.

International recommendation

 All legs, and braces shall be maintained in good


condition, properly secured, and free from
damage, or deflection.

 Chain hoists and snatch blocks shall not be


fastened to braces.

 All legs, and braces shall be maintained in good condition, properly


secured, and free from damage, or deflection. Chain hoists and snatch
blocks shall not be fastened to braces.

 The weep holes ( rains )in the "A" legs of the derrick or mast shall be
kept clear of dirt, gloves, etc.

 An aircraft warning light on the crown shall be provided and shall be


maintained.

Blowout Preventer
The assembly of well control equipment including preventers, spools,
valves, and nipples connected to the top of the wellhead

International Recommendations

 Blowout Preventers shall be installed, maintained, and tested.


 During the installation of the blowout Preventers assembly, only
authorized persons shall be permitted to be in the area.

 When removing blowout Preventers from the wellhead, tag lines shall be
utilized to control BOP stack movement.
 Wire rope, not chains, shall be used to lift the Preventers or diverters.
 When BOP stacks are installed on a wellhead, they shall be braced to
prevent lateral movement
 Four turnbuckles attached to the rig substructure are normally required.
 Areas around the blowout Preventers shal always be kept clear, and
well-lighted.
 Welding is not permitted on BOP's.
 Hydraulic lines from the accumulator to the BOP's shall be either steel
pipe or approved equivalent hose.
 The rig supervisor & HSE Representative shall conduct BOP drills .
 Pad eyes on annular Preventers are designed to lift the annular only.
 DO not attempt to lift the ANNULAR with attached to any other BOP
component.

Accumulator
Used in operating the blowout preventers. The storage device for

- Nitrogen pressurized

- Hydraulic fluid

- International recommendations

 The accumulator unit shall be


periodically inspected to ensure
that the required pressure is being
maintained,

 the gauges should be calibrated to


ensure it is in a good working
order, and the unit free from leaks
and spills.

 The accumulator shall be located


at least 100 feet from the well bore
for gas wells and 60 feet from the
well bore for development oil
wells.

 There shall be at least two remote controls for operating the


accumulator.

 All operating controls shall be clearly marked according to their


function and ram sizes.

 No obstruction to handle movement or locking devices.

 Accumulator capacity test as per API RP 16E , API RP 53

 Are the following alarms present? (API Spec 160 section 2.2.1.7)

o Accumulator low-pressure alarm


o Rig air low-pressure alarm
o Emergency power engaged

 Pre-charge accumulators: min. 1,000 psi


 Are the accumulators bottles hydrostatically tested every 10 years (as
per API 510 section 6.4)
 Located In a safe place (not on the drill floor, as per API Spec 160
section 2.2.4 .6)

Rotary Table

Used to turn the drill stem and support the drilling assembly

International Recommendations:

 Water hoses, lines, or chains shall not be handled or used near a rotary
table while it is in motion.
 Shall not be required or permitted to work on the rig floor while the rotary
table is in motion.
 During tripping operations, personnel setting the slips shall be cautioned
to keep their feet well clear of the rotary table.
 When the Kelly bushing drive, pipe, or other tubular equipment is not in
the rotary the opening in the rotary table shall be covered with a metal
plate.

Slips
Pieces of metal with teeth that are used to prevent pipe from slipping down into
the hole.
International Recommendations

 All slip shall be in place, in good condition.

 Slips shall be inspected before each trip to


check for dies, pins & hand

 The side of the slips shall always be lubricated


to facilitate slip removal.

 No one shall be allowed to kick the slips into


place when tripping.

 Slips shall not be allowed to ride the pipe while


tripping out.

 The rig operators, for any reason, shall not be used improper size
slips.

 No field welding shall be permitted on slips which have been heat


treated.

Elevators
Hinged device with manual operating handles

International Recommendations

 Elevators shall be equipped with a safety latch designed to prevent drill


pipe or other tubular

 Elevators shall be inspected before each trip to ensure that they are in
good condition.

 If defects are found shall be removed from service

 No field welding shall be permitted on Elevators


which have been heat treated

Stairways
Stairs leading from one level to another.

International Recommendations

 Stairways, and platforms shall be free from


dangerous obstructions and shall be
maintained in good condition , clean, and free
from oil, grease, water, or other hazardous
materials

 All ladders, fixed or portable, shall be


maintained in good condition with no broken or
damaged side rails or steps.

 When portable ladders are used, they shall be


secured against slide by the use of safety feet
and tied-off.

 Portable aluminum ladders shall not be used by


electricians or by any other personnel where
they may come into contact with electrical
circuits.

Electrical Control SCR
The generators produce electricity that flows through cables to electric equipment
or panel.

International recommendations

 Each SCR room shall be equipped with


emergency lighting , F.F extinguishers, LOTO
tools , outside audible & visual fire alarm
,communication devices , And should be
grounded
 All switch box & junction box..etc shall be covered
and properly labeled.
Electrical safety equipment checklist

 Are the zones clearly defined on the rig? Is the


hazardous area drawing available?

 Are there proper signs indicating the zones on the


rig?

 Did the electricians attend an EX course?

 Are certified cables and EX cable fittings present?

 Are all AC and DC motors properly grounded with


an external ground wire?

 Are monthly ground measures of AC and DC motors performed?

 Maximum resistance ground wires 1 ohm

 Vibrating equipment (shakers) must be braided wire and ground matting


be used

 When ground loops are used double-loop systems must be used

 Is there flame-path PM performed on the EXd boxes?

Electric Cable Tray

Supports the heavy electrical cables from the control panel to the rig
motors.

International recommendations:

 The installation, use, and maintenance shall


comply with stander such as (NFPA 70,
“National Electrical Code", API RP 500, “).

 All diesel engines shall be equipped with


spark arresting devices.

 Cables from the generators to the derrick shall


be placed in trays to protected from physical
damage

 Each generator skid shall be grounded.

 Auxiliary and emergency standby generators


shall be run at full load for a minimum of two
hours every week and logged

The space around a pipe in a well bore.

Brake

Engine Generator

A diesel, natural gas, or gasoline engine, with a mechanical transmission


and generator for producing power.

Choke Manifold

The arrangement of piping and special valves, called chokes.

Kelly
The heavy square or hexagonal steel. Suspended
from the swivel through the rotary table and connected
to the drill pipe to turn the drill stem.

Standpipe

A vertical pipe rising along the side of the derrick or mast, which leading the
discharge lines from the mud pump to the rotary hose.

MUD PUMPS

A large pump used to circulate the mud (Drilling fluid) on a drilling rig.

Safety precautions:

 Each pump will have a pressure relieving valve


shall be installed and maintained.
 Pumps will be equipped with necessary bleeder
lines and valves to release all pressure within
the pump.
 Will not be attempts to adjust piston rods or
components while pumps are running.
 Liners will not be removed or seated in a pump
by turning it on.
 Condition of chains or belts and sprockets or
pulleys
 Condition of mud pumps gears
 Oil sampling/analysis frequency, preferably
monthly.
 Location relief valve on the discharge manifold, not at the same side as the
pulsation dampener
 Discharge strainer condition
 Condition of valves and seats
 Internal or external lubricating oil pumps present, pre-lubrication possible
 No NPT threaded fittings (for two inch and larger NPT connections)

MIXING EQUIPMENT

Using to Prepare and mixing mud in addition to Maintain mud weight and
properties while drilling the well.

Safety precautions:

 Inspect and test the integrity of valves


on all lines.
 Make necessary repairs.
 Check packing and seals on all
centrifugal pumps.
 The mud system and hopper area
must have, as a minimum, the
following equipment :-
 Eye protection
 Face protection
 Rubber gloves
 Rubber apron
 Rubber boots
 Eye wash station and shower

BULK STOCK SYSTEM

 A tank for storage of drilling fluid Components on a drilling rig

Safety precautions:

All bulk storage tanks shall be equipped with safety relief


valves to prevent excess pressure.

All safety relief valves shall be function tested at least


every three months.

A proper means of access shall be provided to each bulk


storage tank.

Each bulk storage tank shall be clearly marked as to


contents.

Using correct lifting equipment to lift chemical bags

MUD PITS
Open pit in the ground to hold drilling fluid or waste materials after the
treatment of drilling mud.

Safety precautions:

• Mud pits will be equipped with standard handrails.

• Adequate explosion-proof lighting will be installed

• 3- Personnel entering the mud pit must wear a


safety harness with a life line attached.

• 4- Personnel must never enter a mud pit without a


second person standing by in case of emergency.

AGITATOR
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

 A permit to Work (PTW) will be completed , agitators and piping will be


isolated and locked out at the power source before attempting to go
into the mud tanks for repair or cleaning purposes.
