2. (a) What is Mohr’s stress circle? How is it useful in the solution of stress 5
analysis problems?
(b) At a point in steel bar the stresses on two mutually perpendicular
planes are 10 MPa tensile and 5 MPa tensile whereas the shear stress
across these planes is 2.5 MPa. Determine, using Mohr’s circle, the
normal as well as the shear stresses on a plane making an angle of 30o
with the plane of the first stress. Also find the magnitude and the
direction of the resultant stress on the same plane. 10
3. (a) What are the main theories of failure for a material? Explain their
relative use. 5
(b) An axial pull of 20 kN alongwith a shear force of 15 kN is applied to a
circular bar of 20 mm diameter. The elastic limit of the bar material is
230 MPa and the Poisson’s ratio, ν = 0.3. Determine the factor of
safety against failure based on
(a) Maximum shear stress theory
(b) Maximum strain energy theory
(c) Maximum principal strain energy theory 10
4. A horizontal beam 30 m long carries a uniformly distributed load of 1
kN per m on the whole length alongwith a point load of 3 kN at the
right end. The beam is freely supported at the left end. Determine the
position of the second support so that the maximum bending moment
on the beam is as small as possible. Also draw the shear force and
bending moment diagrams indicating main values. 15
(Part-B)
6. (a) Establish relations to find the shear stress across sections of (i) an I-
section (ii) a circular section. What is the maximum value in each
case? 8
(b) Determine the approximate position of shear centre for a channel
section 60 mm X 60 mm outside and of 5 mm thickness. 7

7. (a) Show that for plastic bending, the load factor is the product of shape
factor and factor of safety. 5
(b) A T-section beam of size 200 mm X 120 mm with a uniform thickness
of 15 mm is loaded in such a way that the yielding occurs at the lower
part of the web over a depth of 50 mm. The yield stress of 240 MPa
may be assumed constant over the yielded area. Find the moment of
resistance of the section. 10
