HYDROGRAPHIC COURSES AT THE PAKISTAN NAVY


HYDROGRAPHIC SCHOOL, KARACHI
(2009 - 2010)

(Courses endorsed by the Chairman, ROPME Sea Area Hydrographic Commission)

Dear Hydrographer,

1. To enhance regional cooperation in the field of Hydrography, the Pakistan Navy


Hydrographic Department (PNHD) has decided to hold training courses for Officers, CPOs/Sailors
and Civilians. The courses will be conducted at the Pakistan Navy Hydrographic School and are
designed to cover the requirements for the efficient planning and conducting of hydrographic
surveys. The students will acquire the necessary skills to enable them to be a productive member of a
survey team.

2. The Hydrographer of Pakistan (as ROPME Chairman) has now informed the IHB, on behalf
of the Government of Pakistan, about the following Hydrographic Courses at the PN Hydrographic
School, Karachi in 2009 – 2010 for Gulf countries (1 place per country) on a free tuition basis:

3. It may be noted that, if requested, the courses are also open to other countries on payment.
The ROPME Sea Area Hydrographic Commission countries can also have additional places on
payment. Availability of these courses to other countries on a free tuition basis will be considered in
subsequent years depending upon response and available capacity. Tuition fees for the course are
US$400 per week for Officers and US$200 per week for other ranks/civilian candidates. In addition,
charges towards messing, laundry and other personal incidentals will be payable by the candidates as
per actual. A rebate of up to 50% may be available on tuition fees.

4. The courses will commence according to the above schedule and will comprise theoretical
lessons, practical exercises and on-the-job training / visits to various Hydrographic / Oceanographic
facilities and field surveys onboard a Hydrographic Survey Vessel of Pakistan.

5. Eight places for male students from the Gulf countries of the ROPME Sea Area Hydrographic
Commission littoral region will be considered for financing by the Government of Pakistan on a free
tuition basis. However, allocation of slots under the free tuition basis (1 each) will be solely at the
discretion of the Government of Pakistan.
6. Interested Governments / authorities responsible for hydrography should forward their
nominations through the Embassy of Pakistan in their country to the following addresses, using the
form provided in Annex 1 :

7. Nominations must reach the above authorities 2 months prior commencement of each course.
The same should also be copied to the Embassy of the respective country in Islamabad.

8. It is essential that candidates are employed by the hydrographic office, port authority or
related national authority of their country. The nomination must be made through the employer and
should include a statement specifying that the candidate will be employed in the Government or port
authority service once he has successfully completed the course.

9. Nominated candidates should meet the following criteria:

- Good standard of the English language (written and spoken)


- A background in hydrographic / cartographic / geographic surveying or other
relevant experience.
- Education to school/college level including mathematics and physics.
- Medical fitness
10. The course programme will cover the syllabi of all important aspects of Basic Hydrography /
Cartography and Oceanography to assist in Hydrographic Surveying.
