SAROJINI NAIDU

Sarojini Naidu was a gem of Indian women. She was born on 13th
February 1879 in Hyderabad. Srimathi Varada Sundara Devi and Dr.
Aghorananda Chatopadyaya were her parents. Her family was
famous for Sanskrit learning. Her grandfathers and forefathers were
Sanskrit learners and poets.

She was very intelligent/clever in her studies. She passed in the


matriculation examination even at the age of 12. She started writing
poems by 13 years of age. Her first poem “Lady of the Lake” brought
her good name and recognition. She studied in England from 1895 to
1898. She took her M.A degree from Cambridge University there. She
returned to India in the year 1898 and married Dr. Govindarajulu
Naidu and they had 2 sons and 2 daughters.

Sarojini was a great patriot. She followed Mhatma Gandhi. She


participated in freedom struggle many a time. She presided over
‘Indian National Congress session’ in the year 1925. She was the first
woman who presided over to the Indian National Congress Session.
She was a member in ‘Congress Working Committee’ for many years.

After advent of independence, she was appointed as a


governor to Utter Pradesh. She proved herself to be an able
governor. She passed away on 2nd March 1949.
