CHAPTER I
ABSTRACT
In the name of Allah the Most Gracious and Compassionate. Lord of the Light and the
Darkness who created the universe within six days. Discussing about poetry translation is
very exciting for the people who has sense in literature and arts. According to Casagrande
(1954) poetry is poetically esthetic has intend to transfer messages and aesthetic that inside
source text language into the target language harmoniously. Thus, in this kind translation the
transfer of messages and form are equally important.1
Thus, in this final assignment papers I would like to write about the literature
translation and its analysis, especially poetry translation which I found in lyric song. Perhaps
some people say that the form between poetry and lyric songs are quite different, and the
other say both of them are not quite different. I would say from my assumed that both form
(poetry and lyric songs) in some cases depend from the writter’s lyric sight could be say
different, but you may find in any kinds of music that there are lots of form similarity
between poetry and lyric songs. The explanation about those I will explain detail in
introduction.
In these papers too I used the translation method of adaptation that match for
translating poetry and drama,2 for the detail I will discuss on chapter II (Theoritical View).
Even though your excellency Mr. Supardi have not been discussed yet to us about literature
translation widely because our meeting is finish, but personally I am very grateful to you that
couple last meeting we were already discussing it at glance on the important point view. I in
the name of class honestly are very hungry about the knowledge of translation theory that you
have been taught in our class. Perhaps it is good for the 8th semester next, there will be a class
of translation theory part II, or if could not be made perhaps semiotics class would be fine
and interesting for us to learn it. Because translation and semiotics have relation and integral
part meaning nowdays for scientific languages study.

INTRODUCTION
Obviously I would like to make the papers and its analysis about the translation of
lyric song that I found it. But the form and essence/messages from the lyric song I have found
it has similarity essence and form with the poetry. It is my assumed/hypothesis that some
lyric songs having same form and content with poetry its self. Or I may say that some lyric
songs’ writers/composers write the form and content lyrics imitately same with poetry it self
both in form and content either. For me it is not quite much surprisingly because many
authors songs create it and deriving from poetry, mostly the form and content are same like
poetry he/she derived it. But some of them change the content of words just a few for
harmonizing with tone, rhyme, pitch and music arrangement. For the first case we can look at
Dewa 19 band from Indonesia that many songs of Dhani Ahmad create based/copycat from
the poem of Kahlil Gibran the greatest poet contemporer from Lebanon. Such as ‘Broken
Wings’ adaptated and titled name song by Dhani to be ‘Sayap-Sayap Patah.’
So, it is usual when the authors’ song create the lyric songs and many albums inspired
based on poem of poet or vice versa. Long explanation above it is for convincing you what I
would like to discuss about (songs translation based on poetry form and content).
The short preface what I want to write in this paper is about Gothic literary for
comprehending you firstly before I discuss and analyze about the main or final topic. Gothic
(sometimes referred to as Gothic horror/fiction) is a genre of literature that combines
elements of both horror, terror and romance. As a genre, it is generally believed to have been
invented by the English author Horace Walpole, with his 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto.
And Gothic literature is intimately associated with the Gothic Revival architecture of the
same era. The literary Gothic embodies an appreciation of the joys of extreme emotion, the
thrills of fearfulness and awe inherent in the sublime, and a quest for atmosphere. English
Gothic writers often associated Gothic through medieval buildings with what they saw as a
dark and terrifying period, characterized by harsh laws enforced by torture, and with
mysterious, fantastic, Anti-Catholicism, Anti-Christ, Satanism, Occultism, Demon possession
with curses, the exorcism and superstitious rituals. The refferncies are supported by the Kelt
in Britain Union in medieval century which the people consist of nobility and aristocratic
wealth people whose liked very much in cult Satanic worship such as, drink wine mixed by
3
blood and urine, mass party sex, torture the pitty animals and ritual Satanism within their
castles.3
The most famous gothic novelists book author ever had were; Count Dracula was
created by Bram Stoker in his novel Dracula (1897), Stephen King and Mary Shelley with
Frankenstein. The themes of the literary Gothic have been translated into other media such as
the theatre and had a notable revival in twentieth century. Twentieth century rock and
roll music also had its gothic side. Black Sabbath's 1969 debut album created a dark sound
different from other bands at the time and has been called the first ever "Goth-rock" record
(Baddeley 2002: 264). Themes from gothic writers such as H. P. Lovecraft were also used
among gothic rock and heavy metal bands, especially in black metal, thrash metal, death
metal, and gothic doom metal.4 The most extreme of sub-genre of heavy metal is black metal.
Created firstly by Venom the underground band from England with his debut title song
“Welcome to the Hell” in 1960 and followed by Norway Black Metal bands such as;
Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone in 1970s to 1980s .
Black Metal ideology is not Satanic or strict Atheistic, but more closely to Occultistic5
and sometimes they are closely to Paganist/Polytheist. They also think that Christianity is the
truth enemy that shall be banish forever from their lands (especially in Norway) and always
giving the propaganda to others that is no religion is best and true.
Back to the main discuss about the songs lyrics poetry translation, the black metal
genre bands use the theme poem in gothic extreme style such as world war, antichrist,
Satanism ideology, hatred, suicidal thought, exhortation to criminal violence and satanic
mantra spelling, etc. the lyric songs and form sometimes similarity or exact with poetry.
Therefor I intended to analyze the translation of lyric songs one of black metal famous band
in Norway using derivative approach, the method of translation of adaptation in language and
culturally from text source (a few words of latin and mostly English) into Bahasa Indonesia.

The ideology has countain that there is one superior dark forces to be devote and worship as the truth
supreme Gods.
4
Well maybe it is unfamiliar and seems strange, weird and bizarre when the content of
the poem containing sorrow, gloomy, depression, anger, wrath, darkness, superstition
supernatural, and evilish terms. Perhaps men do not bother/mind to compose and read it
because manhood style are very like it to read about that something bizarre, sensational,
evilish-minded and supertitional dark forces. But do not forget that many writer gothic
novel/fiction are women such as; Phyllis A. Whitney, Joan Aiken, Dorothy Eden, Victoria
Holt, Barbara Michaels, Mary Stewart,Mary Shelley and Jill Tattersall.
For closing paragraph I would like to introduce the fenomenalist black metal band
from Norway it is Limbonic Art. This band has many album and bizarre lyric songs that I will
analyze one of their lyric song which having similarity form and content with poetry. I will
analyze their lyric song on the chapter III (Analysis pages).
Limbonic Art formed in 1993. In 1996, they were signed to the record indie label
Nocturnal Art Productions, owned by Samoth (of Emperor and Zyklon). Their debut album
was Moon in the Scorpio. In 2003, the group decided to disband with a statement saying "we
feel that we have reached as far as we could in our collaboration ... the circle is complete,
begin another".
On June 6, 2006 (06.06.06), the band reunited and started to write new material. On
February 21, 2007 it was announced that the band plans to release the new album
entitled Legacy of Evil in summer 2007.
A subsequent dispute between the band members resulted in Morfeus's ouster from
the band, making Limbonic Art essentially Daemon's solo project. He has currently
completed the new Limbonic Art release, named Phantasmagoria, out summer 2010. The new
music strips the symphonics and keyboards, making it a more raw, pure black metal band.6

CHAPTER II
THEORITICAL VIEW
In this chapter on theoritical view I want to make some prefaces about translation
from source text language that has contain English and latin words7 although my sample in
this research is about one of the lyric song of Limbonic Art the pure black metal band from
Norway, but the form, essence and content have similarity with poetry. So, I use the analyze
for this with poetry translation and use third approach, that is derivative form and content. In
derivative approache in poetry translation the translator does not consider again the original
poetry’s form, he/she uses the poem content as point of departure for using it as a basic. So
then he/she feels freely decide to compose form/translate the source text of the poem into the
target language.8
Otherwise, for the translation method I use the theory translation of Peter Newmark
on emphasizing to target language (Bahasa Indonesia), that is the method of adaptation
translation followed with long explanation for the readers to catch what I meant. Once again
Peter Newmark said (1988:46) that this method the freest form of translation and most
closely to target language the term of adaptation could be acceptable here if the adaptation
will not omit the theme, characters and plot at source language text. Moreover, adaptation
translation much used for translating poem and drama. Overhere has done transmission the
source language culture to the target language/receptor, the original text rewrite and adapted
into target text. If the poet make adaptation a drama scripts to be played, so then he/she

Latin language or script is not usable again for spoken daily language in the world, include in Italy
or Vatican City. Normally the use Italian language. But latin language always used for roman catholic
priest when they arrange devotion and pray in the churches. But not all roman catholic churches in the
world using the latin for devoting and prays. Moreover Vatican at Saint Peter Bassilicus usually they
use latin for mass ceremony vesperian such as in christmass, easter, etc. why do the roman catholic
use latin songs and prays for devoting Jesus in the churches? The simple answer is in 4th century when
the Caesar of Constantine converted to the Christian he pronounced the latin as the Christian nasional
language for replacing the Aramaic and Greek languages as the previously religious devoting services
in the churches.

should keep all characters and plot within the original script, but the dialogue in the source
text has adaptated and adjusted with the target language culture.9
For the closing statements I renounce the conception some poets have said that poetry
could not be translated (Morgan, 1966:272), W. Lednicke (Garnier, 1985:7-9) and the great
poet and novelist on 19th century (Victor Hugo). For me poem or poetry include lyric songs
that have similarity of its could be translated10 without omitting the stylistic beauty of
language, form, essence and messages in the content. Perhaps the readers of my papers seem
feel look like bizarre, weird and strange about my analysis later after you open the next
pages. Because what I am trying to do is to open the readers mind that Gothic poem inside
lyric songs contain a beautiful inside and outside meaning about the blackness humanity’s
sight. Blackness of sorrow, dark, grimness, superstition, magical mantra and spellbound by
the Devil cannot be judgment as meaningless of beautious.11 Used to Demon was the leader
of angels, but sadly, when he was thrown-up from the heaven, being a fallen angel,12 and has
been cursed until the judgment day. He was the most handsome creature of God, expert in
any kinds music tools, had a beautiful voices when he lead the angels to praise the God. 13
The damnation he accepted purely would not decreasing his beautiful voice, the expert in
instrumental any kinds of tools music, the glorious of poem he made, although his appearance
has changed for everlasting.

ANALYSIS FOR SOURCE TEXT LANGUAGES
Transfering Analysis for the first rhyme in words ‘Domine’ and ‘Dominus’ mean God
or Christ in latin language.14 But the true meaning in this poem, Limbonic Art wants to show
to us that both Latin words have mean God/Lord in the darkness. It seems the author of poem
want to explain the dualism in theology especially in ancient Persian beliefs, there are God of
Light/Goodness (Ahura Mazda) and (Ahriman) as God of the Darkness. So the Persian people
want to earn the good kinda they will worship Ahura Mazda and the others want to earn
revenge/vendetta15 as punishment to their enemies they will worship Ahriman. According
Zen Avesta the holy book of Zoroaster (ancient pagan-dualist religion in Persia) composed by
Zarathustra, Ahura Mazda as the God of Light will win the battle againsts Ahriman and his
companions. On the contrary Limbonic Art wants to show that God of the Darkness will win
the battle against Jesus Christ and his faithful companions, and he shall burn the heaven and
fulfill the new world order with bloodshed and tyranny.
The question is why Limbonic Art didn’t use term Deus, Erus16 or Theist as
replacement words than Domine/Dominus? The simple answer I think they are arbitrary
words that Limbonic Art (LA) chosed it appropriately. The terms naming Deus, Erus and
Theist are paganic names derived from Latin and Greek words, at glance (LA) strongly
recommended for using three term names, but (LA) has chosen Domine and Dominus as a
big opposite against Christ and its Christendom. Or I may say (Lucifer vs Jesus Christ).
And how about the meaning of ‘Sathana’ and ‘Sathanas’? I am very sure that you
may understandfully of theirs mean even though both words derived from Latin words.
Sathana is single noun and Sathanas for plural nouns. Moreover, Anton La Vey has made
popular the term of Sathanas or Sathana especially in his narrated movies that has been
published in Universal Studios, Warner Bros and Dino de Laurentis Pictures17
‘Spiritus’ means in English: breath, breathing/life/spirit.18 In the semantic Gothic

discourse exposition medieval century and its relation into modern/post-modern study within
beliefs in Christianity believers, ‘Spiritus’ means that darkness forces has a spirit, soul whose
also temptating mandkind in decreasing religious consecration of human. So, they will far
away from God’s guidance and taking place in the aberrant path. ‘Virtus’ still within Latin
has mean in English: manliness, excellence, character, worth and courage. Its mean that
Black God19 (opposite term of God Christ) is manhood, symbol of brave, courage and
patriarchy-virilism (manhood power-centrism). So what is the short essential meaning of
Dominus Spiritus Virtus Sathanas? You and I may say it has mean ‘Ave Satan!’, long live
Satan or Satan is great, etc.
On the first line in the first rhyme (Read: bait in Bahasa Indonesia) the overture text is
match on both last sound. So it is also for the second and fourth lines rhyme scheme is perfect
especially on third and fourth lines still in the first rhyme with ending ‘s’. The rhyme scheme
of source text is (a-b-c-c).
The second rhyme scheme of source text are quite much adequate (d-f-g-f) but what I
want to critize is on the third line. The word of ‘torture’ is good/match, but it would be the
best when ‘torture’ replaced with ‘aberrant’. If would it will make good perfectly rhyme and
ending good sounds of ‘ant’. Take a look at this!
On the third rhyme in fourth line ‘The soul to terminate’ is less match for using ‘to’ I
think would be the best replaced ‘to’ with ‘is’. The rhyme scheme is perfect (h-i-h-i).
19
The new term has been made by Marduk the Norway black metal band.
11
On the fourth rhyme in third line ‘Spectrum’ it is rather complicated to explain even
in English. Spectrum is sequence colorful in rainbow20 in the recent metaphor
analysis‘Spectrum’ word is a new term and the newest thing in poem of black metal
composition. Spectrum as far I know is oftenly used for the study theoretical physics,
sometimes is used too in metaphysics.21 It would be more appropriate when the word of
‘Spectrum’ replaced with ‘creature’ so the ending sounds of the first and third line more
pleasant ‘er’ to listened ‘overture and creature’. In the semantics meaning implicitly the
word “I glance the illusive spectrum” denote that he looked/gazed at God’s light but the
ray’s God is fake impurely and made him dissapointed. The rhyme scheme is (j-k-j-k) a good
perfectly rhyme.
Similarly on the fifth rhyme the scheme (l-m-l-m). no action to be critized. The
symbolization within this rhyme is expressing about to expect the black supernatural power
from the master of the darkness. The sentence “Into darkness so impure divine” means that
Christ when entering the blackzone of the master darkness would be impure divinely, lost his
Godly power. In the fourth line Limbonic Art is trying to tell about ‘bloodshed’ because of
war, revenge, vendetta or mayhem antisocial psychopathic causes are the symbolism of evil
wine within the glass that wine is a purely blood cause by human’s evilish-acted.
On the sixth rhyme the scheme is (n-o-p-q). the rhyme seems not perfect because the
ending sounds each line not harmonize and differ each of them. But the essence form is very
nice even getting spooky to spell it. The essence meaning of this rhyme is very extreme and
smelled as devoting, worshipping and praying to Satan or servants of Satan for reaching the
black glory and winning the domination victory. ‘Martyrium’ and ‘mystrium’ are same
originally from the latin words. ‘Martyrium’ is martyr, the man/people who suffers or dies
while upholding or defending religious beliefs.22 While ‘mystrium’ is a mystery . in this last

rhyme the author/composed declamate the poem in the first line used code switching or
mixing it in a sentence three English words and two latin words its self. Thus, it made a good
tone to listened.
In English terms my Lord, my God and my master could be the same when a person
prays to God and positioning him self as a slave kneel down in front of his master. But it is
different in the semantics and terms Bahasa Indonesia, ‘tuan ku’ means (my master not as a
god), but ‘Tuhan ku’ means (My God or My Lord). The conclusion are quite differences both
words if we compare from English into Bahasa Indonesia, its mean related with language and
culture both languages.
In the second rhyme scheme the patterns are (c-c-c-d). (c-c-c) are perfect rhyme,
nevertheless in fourth line the ryhm (d) is not perfect rhyme. But I assumed the second rhyme
is quite much adequate for being declamated.
14
CONCLUSION
Just for make sure and I do not want to have misinterpretation for the readers when
read my papers. All of I have explained in long discourse above/previously that what I wrote
is not reflection of my self that I intended to bizarre thought in literature and translation its
self to be horrible by the readers. I just want to explore that Gothic theme in novel fiction,
theatre, drama or even in poetry declamation on the stage from medieval century until present
have been always translated into any receptor languages include in Bahasa Indonesia. Novel,
composition and its translation self either being famous reading for any ages, child, teens,
adulthood or even for old-aged.
Novel translation that always been publishing talking about love, romance, faithful,
loyalty, inspiring or motivational stories are good. But people not sometimes, I may say
oftenly want to read about supernatural, the dark inside of unseen world, etc, although most
of them are fiction. But moreoverly since middle-aged century until nowdays that literature
and needs translation its self being favourites reading for the people. This is why the
translators who expert in novel, poetry, drama, etc very needed in Globalization era. For
Indonesian translators they are not just demanded mastering English in grammar and
structure. But when they are getting job to translate the strange poem, novel or script drama
example that theme about the west culture which is involved about Gothic tradition and
customs, no matter like or dislike they (Indonesian translators) demanded for having
knowledge about theme, culture and civilization of Gothic era history that they should master
it. What would be happen if the translators do not have any idea about the culture on the text
that he should translate it naturally and acceptable for the Indonesian readers? I think all of us
may know the answer.
For closing statements it is kind a difficult circumstances to translate the Gothic poem
into Bahasa Indonesia. I thought it would be untranstability, but alhamdulillah praise to Allah
fortunately it could be translated even though maybe the form, messages a little bit changed
to harmonize into target language (Bahasa Indonesia). The poem messages and contents
above/previously in analysis chapter that is containing such spelling mantra several sentences
could not have the same form and meaning with traditional Javanese local mantra for instance
example. So I use the derivative approache whereas strange for the readers but I think they
will get the meaning because I made more closely to be understood. This is not to be imitate,
being a part of infidelity. But, it is a parth of sensation of translation Gothic’s poem to be
introduced to the readers. Thank you.
