- Discussing about how people can be biased with anything - “unconscious bias”
- Our brains take short-cuts because our brain is processing so much information and
filters common patterns our brain recognizes
- This means we do not see the entire picture, but pick out the patterns we
recognize
- Comparison between men and women
- Men are identified as “providers,” but women are identified as “caring”
- This is a bias; therefore we do not recognize women as leaders
- Try flipping the bias by asking yourself to reflect on female roles being the same as male
roles
Second Discussion
- Discussion about gender roles
- How we should encourage both male and females to apply for the same jobs
- The main issue to be aware is that they are both equal and there is not a
specific job for males only and a specific job for females only
Third Discussion
- As a counselor, we are in a powerful role where we can guide students in a different
direction
- Our words influence students and people regarding their future
Fourth Discussion
- It is important to know yourself first
- Question: What do you feel when you walk into a room filled with the opposite
gender as you?
- It is vital to be aware of the students you are working with -- what is their background?
Are they an introvert? Which student population: First gen, international? Older,
younger?
Fifth Discussion
- Author: Nancy McWilliams
- She focuses on psychoanalytic theory
- Emphasizes the curiosity in itself can be helpful for clients
- Maintaining a posture of curiosity can help the conversation flowing when
working with students
- Our curiosity can image God in our conversations
- Encourage the “curiosity” during appointments
