The document outlines the procedure for checking camshaft wear on D12, D12A, D12B, and D12C engines and provides guidance on acceptable vs unacceptable wear.

The procedure involves tilting the cab, removing the crankcase hose and valve cover, using a cranking tool to turn the camshaft, and inspecting the camshaft lobes and surfaces for wear.

Acceptable wear is unevenness or scoring that will not affect engine operation, while unacceptable wear includes material damage where the camshaft should be replaced.

Turn the camshaft using the cranking tool. Check the

camshaft with regard to wear on the camshaft lobes and
damage to the surfaces.

Unevenness can develop on cam lobe surfaces during

normal operation. This does not mean the camshaft
must be changed.

Figure 1 shows examples of scoring that will not affect

the running of the engine. Camshafts with this type of
scoring need not be changed.

Figure 2 shows examples of camshaft with material

damage that should not be reused.
