Introduction

I. I’m going to start off by listing a few items: pancakes, eggs, sausage, and orange
juice. You may be asking yourself what these items have in common. Well, they
are all what is usually considered breakfast food.
II. In my opinion, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. However,
according to a 2016 article labeled “The Effect of Regular Breakfast on Body
Mass Index” written by Iva Klimesova et al. in the American Journal of Health
Education, twelve to thirty-four percent of children and adolescents often skip
breakfast (Klimesova, 2016, pp. 42-46).
A. Did you know that regularly eating breakfast has a major impact on your overall
health?
Not only is eating a nice meal a great way to start the day, there are many health benefits to
eating breakfast too, especially in children and people of our age group. The regular consumption
of breakfast has been proven to be linked to the overall improvement of our bodily health and
well- being as well as improving our cognitive functions.

I. As someone who always tries my best to eat breakfast, I can speak to the effect that it
has on the human body. I can also speak to the effect that it has on the body when you
skip breakfast.

C. By telling you this, I hope to change your mindset about the meal and convince you
to eat it more frequently.
Transition: To begin, I will start by telling you the many health benefits eating
breakfast has on the body.

III. Body
2) When you start your day by eating breakfast, you are sending a message to your body
that it will get more calories throughout the day by eating other meals but when you
don’t eat breakfast, you are sending your body the message that it will need to
conserve incoming calories rather than burning them. This causes people who skip
breakfast to have a higher body mass index even though they may be eating less
calories in a day compared to someone who regularly eats breakfast.
Transition: Helping jumpstart your metabolism is only one way that eating breakfast
can benefit us. Another way it can help is by improving our mood.
1) In an article written by Theresa Nicklas et al in the 1993 issue of the Journal of the
American Dietetic Association titled “Breakfast Consumption Affects Adequacy of
Total Daily Intake in Children,” it is said that consuming breakfast causes steadier
blood sugar levels (Nicklas, 1993, pp. 886-891).
3) This is due to the release of the amino acid tryptophan, which helps many of our
organs function. Our body cannot produce it naturally so it is important that we
receive it from outside sources. Once it is absorbed into our bodies from food, it is
converted into 5-hydroxytryptophan which in turn gets turned into serotonin which is
commonly dubbed the ‘good mood hormone’ which is why eating breakfast can help
put us in a good mood for the rest of the day.
Transition: Eating breakfast not only improves our bodily health but also our
academic performance. This can be proven using the case study titled “The
Importance of Breakfast to Start the School Day” written by Dorothy Lepkowska in
the 2015 British Journal of School Nursing (Lepkowska, 2015, pp. 171-174).
1) This case study focuses on the opening of the first breakfast clubs in UK schools in
the late 1990s. At this point in time, all children were expected to excel in school, no
matter their background. There was plenty of evidence that showed students who
went to school hungry often had a hard time concentrating during class and were less
likely to succeed as much as those who came to school having had breakfast.
2) Stan Morris, a retired teacher who helped in start one of the first breakfast clubs in
London, was quoted in the study as saying “ they were also more likely to be
disruptive in lessons and to get into trouble.” After doing research, schools decided
that providing breakfast for those who could not eat it at home may improve their
academic standing.
3) This was proven to be correct when in the first few weeks after starting a breakfast
club, there was reports from teachers that there was better attention, improvements in
behavior, and an improvement in grades of the students who had been targeted in the
first place. Also, there was less absences due to sickness and poor health. Stan Morris
said “The breakfast club was having a positive effect on many areas of children’s
lives, and not just their school work. They had become healthier too.”
Transition: If you have decided to eat breakfast more often, you may be wondering
how to achieve this. Or maybe one of the reasons you haven’t been eating breakfast as
often is because you aren’t aware of ways to gain access to it. I am going to explain a
few ways you can achieve this.
1) The most obvious way to improve your access to breakfast is eating in the dining hall in
the SUB. There is breakfast there Monday through Friday as well as brunch on
Saturdays and Sundays. There is many options for breakfast there so you can quite
easily create a balanced breakfast plate.
2) Another way to improve your access to breakfast is by purchasing a few things from the
grocery store, such as Wal-Mart. There are relatively cheap items there. You don’t have
to buy things for a full meal but something as simple as bread for toast, granola bars,
and cups of yogurt will go a long way in starting your day. Even the small things help
as it is better than eating nothing.

A. Review- As stated previously, there are many benefits to starting your day off by
eating breakfast. Eating breakfast will help improve so many aspects of your life,
from your health, to your emotions, to your
B. If you are an average human being like I am, you need food to live. People often eat
food only because they have to in order to survive or they eat it because they have
nothing else do. If you will eat food for those reasons, why not eat the meal that will
benefit you the most?
