Imagine you are a nutritionist from a Health Centre. You have been invited by a school to give a
talk on the importance of taking breakfast. Write out the speech.
Good morning to the principal, Mr Muhammad Khairul Azmani bin Othman, teachers and all
students, I am Dr Eileen Ivy Goh Kim Ming. The topic of my speech today is “The Importance of
Taking Breakfast”. I am here to convince you to take breakfast every morning before you go to
school.
Breakfast is often called the most important meal of the day, and with good reason. Like gasoline in
your car, breakfast provides the fuel you need to take on the challenges of your day. Breakfast
powers up your body and your brain and reduces the risk of weight gain. Even a quick breakfast is
better than nothing.
Children should never go without breakfast. It causes poor performance at school, creates a lasting
bad habit and affects their learning chances in all areas of life. Studies were conducted in which
children were asked to perform tasks after either having eaten or not eaten breakfast. Much
evidence pointed out to improvements in learning and memory and weight control among those
who ate breakfast. Breakfast also has other beneficial factors, such as improving concentration and
increasing nutrition. Breakfast keeps you focused, on task and can improve your performance in the
workplace, school or even in sports beside associate with enhance creativity and increase
productivity.
In choosing the type of breakfast, try to focus on a blend of protein and carbohydrates. Hearty
carbohydrates will give that boost of energy to jump-start your day. A mix of protein will be the
staying power to keep your body going strong over the next three to four hours until lunch. Plan
different choices for breakfast to ensure varieties on our plate every morning.
Eating breakfast boosts metabolism, which produces enzymes needed to lose weight and
metabolize fat. Those who do not eat breakfast usually feel very hungry, which causes them to eat
larger meals later in the day. This is not good for your metabolism because your body needs to be
taking in smaller amounts of food as the day goes on. Those who think that lunch and dinner are the
most important meals of the day are wrong. In fact, breakfast should be the largest meal of the day
because it takes the entire day for your body to digest food. The best time to be digesting food is
during the day when you are active. Evening meals of more than 500 calories can cause bloating and
discomfort, which can interfere with sleep.
It would be a good idea to exercise before breakfast. This might help you to work up an appetite.
Also make sure you allow enough time for breakfast. If you are feeling stressed or in a rush in the
morning, you may be less inclined to spend the time on a good breakfast.
If you are really in a hurry, drink a glass of juice at the very least. If you find yourself skipping
breakfast, try these quick breakfasts. They are easy to grab on the way out the door or can be
prepared the night before, such as yogurt, fresh fruit or a whole-grain muffin. People often say that
they never have time for breakfast, but even a banana or energy bar on the go will help.
If you are skipping your breakfast, you are putting yourself at risk for diseases. According to Kristi
King, a senior clinical dietitian at Texas Children's Hospital, breakfast skippers have been found to
have a "higher risk of Type 2 diabetes, higher risk of obesity due to insulin resistance and hormone
regulation, as well as increased risk for heart attacks and hypertension." When you skip breakfast,
your immunity goes down. According to Tehzeeb Lalani, a nutritionist with Scale Beyond Scale,
periods of fasting appear to trigger damage to the cells and the body needs to be fed food regularly
in order to maintain healthy levels of immune cells that fight infections and improve the action of
fighter cells in the body.
In conclusion, it cannot be denied that breakfast does give us a lot of advantages, including provide
energy to help having a better performance at school, helps to maintain a healthy weight, avoid us
from getting diseases, improve concentration and increase nutrition.
Students, after listening to my speech, make sure you start your day with breakfast. Thank you for
listening.
