Pinacanauan River: The Largest Tributary of Cagayan River

The Cagayan Valley is said to be one of the most fertile lands in the
Philippines, owing this distinction to its many rich and beautiful rivers like the
serene and crystal clear Pinacanauan River, which is truly a sight to behold.

Pinacanauan River is one of the largest tributaries of the Cagayan River, the
longest, widest and most powerful river in the Philippines. Its name comes from
the local term pinacanauan, which means “left-most.” It is found in the
southeast of Cagayan Province in the municipality of Peñablanca in Cagayan
Valley. Along with other rivers, it drains the agricultural plains of Cagayan
Valley and serves as a water source for irrigation and other purposes. With its
clear waters and beautiful natural setting, it is one of the tourist attractions of
Cagayan Province.

The tributary is found in the Callao Caves National Park in Peñablanca. A

tourist zone, Callao Caves National Park features large rock formations and
caves as well as Pinacanauan River. Wild lilies grow abundantly in this green
area.

With its class I and II rapids, Pinacanauan River is a popular site for
whitewater rafting and kayaking as well as for boating and swimming. The area
around the river is surrounded by mountains which are suitable for hiking,
climbing, and spelunking. Every year on April 21, a boat rowing race known as
Bankarera takes place on the river.

Blue Waterfalls And Caves In Cagayan

The Blue Waterfalls and Cave is located at the town of Baggao, which is a
first class municipality in the province of Cagayan. This place has to be the most
unbelievable place we've been so far. Unbelievable in a way that we've never
imagined such a magnificent beauty of nature exists in this part of the country.
It is located 62 kilometers north of Tuguegarao City. We were not surprised,
though, how it has kept its raw beauty as it is within one of the most hidden
places hence not much tourists visit this area. As of November 2014, we saw
that there is an undergoing construction of roads leading to the Bluewater,
making it more accessible for nature enthusiasts.
Imagine the view of endless waterfalls and the relaxing sound of the waters
hitting the rocks, Bluewater is definitely one of the attractions you shouldn't
miss when visiting Cagayan. The adventure starts with the 2-hour trek from
Barangay Pallagao Bascag. One can also explore inside the cave, but with the
help of your guides. Life vests are required as there are parts of the cave when
you would need to dive in the cold waters just to get to the other side.
Awesome crystal formations in the cave will also amaze you.

SIERRA MADRE, THE CAGAYAN VALLEY SHIELD

Cagayan Valley Region is within the typhoon belt. It is also prone to different
types of disasters such as tsunami as it has a wide coastal zone, earthquake as
it is within the ring of fire, landslide because of its valleys and mountain slopes,
and flash floods from the upstream to downstream.

Also known as the “backbone of Luzon,” Sierra Madre is the longest mountain
range in the Philippines. It covers the northeast coast of Luzon island, serving
as natural shield against typhoons coming from the Pacific Ocean. The range
also comprises numerous watersheds that serves the adjacent agricultural
lands in Central Luzon and Cagayan Valley. Furthermore, it supports major
infrastructure, including irrigation dams, water utility and power plants, that
are serving urban settlements, including Metro Manila.

 It has a land area of approximately 1.4 million hectares spanning 10

provinces (Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Nueva Ecija, Aurora,
Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna and Quezon).
 The continuous forest landscape represents about 40% of the country’s
forest cover.
 It encompasses the greatest number of protected areas in the country; all
in all sixty-eight (68), including national parks, watershed forest reserves,
natural monuments, marine reserves, protected landscapes and seascapes.
 Given its vastness, the range is an important biological site due to its high
floral and faunal diversity, in which many of the species are unique to the
Philippines.
 Northern Sierra Madre is drained by 14 major river systems, 11 of which
empty into the Philippine Sea and 3 flow into the Rio Grande de Cagayan as
tributaries of the Ilagan River. Palanan River, with a drainage area of
63,571 hectares (157,090 acres) or 29% of the park’s total area, is the
most extensive, followed by Abuan River and Catalangan River.
Cagayan is part of one of the largest valleys in the Philippines formed by the
majestic Sierra Madre and Cordillera mountain ranges. It is traversed by the
mighty 330-km long Cagayan River and its various tributaries.
