A. Demographic Profile and Problems
One of the places in Barangay Darasa is being observed and interviewed by the
college students of the First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities. There are 5
female respondents from which some are housewives and business women. Their age
ranges from 20-62 years old. The results of the interview show many problems in the
said community.
The environmental issue is the most problem of the respondents that was stated in
the interview. Three out of five respondents experienced problems such as garbage
disposal and there is no garbage collector in their community. They said that the
garbage is just burned and the smoke increases air pollution. The cause of this problem
is having a big population in the community. In order to solve this problem, they suggest
that there must be a collector of garbage in their community.
Some people in the community are going home at night and one of the problems
that were mentioned in the interview was about streetlights. The respondent said that
some of the streetlights are not working well and the officials are not good enough to
lead their barangay. She added that if there is someone who will adequately lead the
community and associate the people, the problems will be resolved. She also states that
the possible way to solve this problem is that people should choose a commendable
leader who will settle this kind of problem.
Parents on the barangay are having their concern about finding work to support the
family. One of the interviewees said to us that the barangay gave them a free tutorial
activity on how to massage and that is one of the provided programs given to them but
the resources are not enough and the equipment are not available for them to start a
business. The interviewer noticed that the main sources of income are the sari-sari
stores only, so they are looking for something that can be an extra income.
B. Reflection
Making changes to one's community is a big achievement for everyone. Aside from
helping on taking care of our surroundings, I am happy to make people happy. Knowing
their community problem is a starting point and I knew that there is an obvious and
cliché issue that we should solve. It may be hard to resolve but I believe that with the
help of FAITH Colleges Community and with the help of the Barangay Officials and the
people residing there, we will reach our primary goal.
Balazon, Nicole I.
First of all, I would like to commend the interviewees because they are really welcoming
and they invited us to come and sit while conducting the interview. The things that I
learned from the activity was that the community has different concerns about the
environment. It is not only for their personal needs but for their own barangay also. I
also noticed when conducting the interview that even though they have their own job, it
is not enough to satisfy all their needs at home. The opportunities are not bright to them
that some of their family members are pushing hard to find work outside the place. Also,
about their concern on the environment that the garbage is harming the health of the
families at that barangay and we would like to help them. As they also mentioned, their
barangay officials are not active to the concerns of the people. Our team will be
conducting a project, specifically to wipe-out the garbage off of the streets of that
barangay. It is because it is one of the concerns that most of the interviewees
mentioned. It is thanks to this community-based project, we are going give them even it
is just a little support to satisfy the needs and concerns of the people.

We all have different aspects in life and different strategies to fight all the struggles that
we been through. Every day is a challenge for us and the community that we belong is
the place where we rely on ourselves. And in this activity, I found myself realizing
that I’m living in the same community, where we will conduct our program, and
not all the people are having the same attention they want but I’ glad to say that
they welcome us nicely. After the interview that we conduct I heard a lot of
complaints and saying garbage, streetlights, their health, and money are the
problems. I’m concern because they are waiting for the change to have a better
community and they also mentioned that some leaders in barangay are not
attentive and hardworking to lead the community. So, our group are willing to
give community service in some of their problems that can really help them to
stand up in their own. This opportunity is not only for requirements but to the
people who really need an attention and help of other people that can give a
better life for their community.
Last February 18, 2019, our class BSA 1A was scheduled to go to do the needs
assessment. This is the first step to find out what the community is having trouble with.
For our class, our community is Barangay Darasa. Our group was divided into pairs and
was tasked to roam around and interview netizens. The person we interviewed was a
house wife and said that the most complaints she has heard are the loud videoke
noises. Aside from that is the garbage collection process which she said was takes too
long to pick up the garbage. After that we all went back to our school and had our group
discussion. Our discussion is about analyzing the data we gathered and identifying the
problem of the community.
Paying attention to people and things that had problems here in the world that has non-
permanent solutions make me feel that as a part of it like that a community has. I found
myself in a different place where I lived. Along with the program that we are proposing,
our community service in our chosen area, which is Barangay Darasa is experiencing a
lack of attention to the issues of its residents. But, before I figure out or pick up the side,
I was able to observe the place; the surroundings, the ambiance, the people and their
status here. The first thing I noticed was the trashes everywhere that we would normally
see most of all places in the Philippines that have adverse effects on nature and health.
Also, the security that does not dominate the welfare and safety of its inhabitants and
the fears of those who passed through it because of hearing bad concerns about this
village. So, I'm excited to share the knowledge I have where they can use to solve the
visible problems they were experienced if and only if they can establish also their
discipline and fellowship while getting outcomes from them as one barangay, and at the
same time I also feel the fear of feeling bad about our future program in case it is
already implemented. However, I have confidence and positive thoughts that everything
will be successful if we have the same goal for the betterment of their barangay.
Masayes, Jefferson
My definition of community it's a place in the which have a harmony in each and every
one, people and the environment. But due to the human nature, of striving for more and
always aims a careless living, they tend to neglect things that I they think won't benefit
them. When my partner was asking some questions and I take some notes I was quite
disappointed, why? First, they used to point someone they referring to. They seem to
have some sort of conflicts to the other member of their community. Second, on the time
I ask them the question that "what do you think is the possible answer in the problems
that have been mentioned" the answered me with "discipline", "change the barangay
official", "someone should collect the garbage" and "just burn the garbage". In the back
of my mind I'm asking "should someone need to take responsibility for your garbage"
and telling "you know its not the right thing ". The time I looked to those kids playing in
the street I just hopelessly sigh because in my mind I know that the world can offer
better than this but because of some instances we tend to live the way lesser than what
do everyone deserve. I think I need more enlightenment in understanding the world to
make some good change for the future.
Morcilla, Menche C.
During our interviews, we found out that most of their problems can only be resolved
through the help of the local government or anyone who has a position in the
community, except their problem in garbage. Their population might be a contributing
factor to the alarming case of waste disposal problems in the community. They're also
too far from the main road which makes it difficult for them to be reached by the garbage
collectors. With this, I realized that there is a need for raising awareness about the
negative impacts of garbage to the citizens themselves and to the environment.
Community Needs Assessment is the process of observing the needs and problems of
the target Barangay to come up with the possible solution. The chosen barangay is
Darasa, Tanauan City, Batangas which helps us in identifying the three main problems
to resolve or maybe some programs for prevention such as garbage, street lights and
stray dogs. Within those problems, we've come up with the garbage solution through
sharing some knowledge about proper waste disposal, how some of it will be recycled
and clean out drives. We believed that this project can be done by anyone, may create a
big impact, and will no longer be the problem.
