August- 19
 The “Panini Language Laboratory” has been inaugurated by Sushma Swaraj, the Union
Minister of External Affairs (MEA), during the 11th World Hindi Conference (WHC)
2018 at Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) at Port Louis in Mauritius on August 19.

 The World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is held every year on August 19 to pay tribute to
aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service, and to rally support for people
affected by crises around the world. The campaign theme of 2018 WHD is #NotATarget.

 Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan took oath as Pakistan's new prime


minister. Khan, the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), secured 176 votes while
his only rival and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Sharif got 96 votes, National
Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser announced.

 India defeated Bangladesh in the final of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF)
Under-15 Women’s Championship in Thimpu, Bhutan. A solitary second-half strike by
Sunita Munda helped the Indian U-15 team clinch the title.

 This year's Asian Games, also known as Jakarta Palembang 2018, has started from 18th
August to 02nd September in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang. It is the
second time when Jakarta is hosting the sports games after 1962.

 The United States government awarded the Legion of Merit (Degree of Commander) to

 India successfully flight tested the indigenously developed helicopter launched Anti-Tank
Guided Missile ‘HELINA’ from Pokhran in Rajasthan. The weapon system tested for its
full range was released smoothly from the launch platform. The missile hit the target with
high precision.

 The Indian and Thailand's armed forces concluded a two-week long platoon level
military exercise called ‘Exercise Maitree 2018’ in Jammu & Kashmir’s Srinagar. The
exercise was an annual event designed to strengthen the partnership between armies of
the two countries.

 Delhi government’s additional director of health, SK Arora was awarded prestigious


World Health Organization (WHO) World No Tobacco Day 2017 Award for his
extraordinary contribution towards tobacco control.

 It was a mixed day for India on Day two of the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia. A
dominating Bajrang Punia opened India’s gold medal account by defeating Japan’s
Daichi Takatani in the final of Men’s Freestyle 65 kg. category.

 36-year-old Johnson announced his retirement from international cricket during the Test
series against New Zealand in Perth in November 2015. He claimed 239 wickets in 153
one-day internationals, and 38 wickets in 30 T20 internationals for Australia.

 Indiabulls Housing Finance (IBHFL), India’s second-largest housing finance company,


appointed Mr.S.S.Mundra as an independent director on the board of the company. He is
the former Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.

August- 21

 Vinesh Phogat has created history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win a
gold medal at the Asian Games. in the final match in freestyle 50 kg category, she
defeated Japan’s Yuki Irie in Jakarta, Indonesia on August 20, 2018.

 Shooter Saurabh Chaudhary (16) has clinched gold in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol event at
the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games in Indonesia on August 21. It is India’s first shooting gold
in the ongoing event.
 The Supreme Court ruled that the ‘None of The Above’ (NOTA) option will not be
applicable for voting in the Rajya Sabha elections. The ruling was made by a bench of
Justices comprising CJI Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud.

 Digital payments firm Paytm has partnered with China's Alibaba to launch AI-based
cloud computing platform 'Paytm AI Cloud'.

 Centre has declared the Kerala floods as a calamity of “severe nature”. The central
government has also scaled up its relief and rescue operations.Minister of State for Home
Kiren Rijiju said the Kerala floods were being treated as natural calamity of severe
nature.

 The first-ever joint air exercise involving the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the the Royal
Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) commenced at Subang Air Base in Malaysia. This is the
inaugural bilateral exercise between IAF & RMAF.

 Former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi was awarded the 24th Rajiv Gandhi
National Sadbhavana Award on the occasion of 74th birth anniversary of former Prime
Minister Rajiv Gandhi, in New Delhi.

August- 22

 The Chhattisgarh government has decided to re-name state’s new capital city of Naya
Raipur as “Atal Nagar” in memory of late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It has
also been decided to develop an “Atal Memorial” in an area of five acres at state’s new
capital.

 The first-ever International Day of Remembrance and tribute to the Victims of Terrorism
is observed by United Nations on 21st August 2018 to honour the innocent victims of
terror attacks around the world, who will forever remain in our hearts.

 President Ram Nath Kovind appointed governors for seven states Bihar, Haryana,
Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Tripura.
The newly appointed Governors of 7 states are as follows-
1. Satya Pal Malik - Jammu & Kashmir (Replaced NN Vohra)
2. Tathagata Roy - Meghalaya (Replaced Ganga Prasad)
3. Lalji Tandon - Bihar (Replaced Satya Pal Malik)
4. Ganga Prasad - Sikkim (Replaced Shriniwas Patil)
5. Kaptan Singh Solanki -Tripura (Replaced Tathagata Roy)
6. Satyadev Narayan Arya - Haryana (Replaced Kaptan Singh Solanki)
7. Baby Rani Maurya - Uttarakhand (Replaced K K Paul).

 Serena Williams (with earnings of $18.1 million) was the highest paid female athlete for
a third consecutive year in 2018, according to "List Of Highest Paid Female Athletes
2018" published by Forbes. Indian badminton player P.V. Sindhu was at seventh
place with earnings of $8.5 million. The Top 3 Highest Paid Female Athletes On The
List Are:
1. Serena Williams ($18.1 million),
2. Dane Caroline Wozniacki ($13 million),
3. Sloane Stephens ($11.2 million).

 Former England captain David Beckham will receive the UEFA President's Award for
his contribution to football and promoting the sport in "every corner of the planet".

August- 23

 Mukesh Ambani-led telecom company Reliance Jio secured the top spot in Fortune's
global 'Change the World' list released on August 20. American pharma company Merck
ranked second while Bank of America ranked third on the list. Chinese group Alibaba is
ranked 5th on the list.

 T P Sharma will head the Chhattisgarh Lok Ayog, set up to deal with corruption cases
against public servants. Sharma, the state's fourth chief Lokayukta, will succeed Justice
(retired) Shambhu Nath Shrivastava, who was appointed to the post on August 14, 2013.

 The 4th summit of Heads of State/Government of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-
Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) will be held at Kathmandu in
Nepal on August 30 and 31. All member states of BIMSTEC will participate in the
Summit.

 Iran unveiled its first domestic fighter jet named 'KOWSAR' with President Hassan
Rouhani. The new "Kowsar" is a fourth-generation fighter shown at the National Defence
Industry exhibition in Tehran. It was "100-percent indigenously made" for the first time.
 Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan have made it to the Forbes’ list of World’s Highest-
Paid Actors 2018, which was topped by George Clooney. Akshay and Salman made it to
spot seven and nine, respectively. Top 3 on Forbes’ list of the world’s best-paid male
actors 2018:
1.George Clooney: $239m
2. Dwayne Johnson: $124m
3. Robert Downey Jr: $81m.

 The Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIT-H) has launched an exclusive


incubator “Fabless Chip Design Incubator (FabCI)” to boost chip design. It is a first of its
kind in India that will focus on creating an ecosystem for start-ups in chip design.

 The book “No Spin” is the autobiography of renowned Australian bowler Shane Warne,
which will release on October 30. It is the true story behind the headlines, in Warne’s
own voice, and challenges some of the enduring myths and untruths that surround him.

 The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has appointed former Punjab and Haryana High
Court Chief Justice S J Vazifdar as head of a three-member committee to decide mining
company Vedanta's plea challenging closure of its Sterlite copper plant at Tuticorin.

 The World Bank launched ‘bond-i', the world’s first bond to be created, allocated,
transferred and managed by using distributed ledger technology. This two-year bond
successfully raised 110 million Australian dollars (USD 80.48 million).

 Treasurer Scott Morrison has been elected the new Prime Minister of Australia after
winning an internal vote of 45-40 against former Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton.

 Chief Minister of Rajasthan Vasundhara Raje launched India’s largest Business Incubator
“Bhamashah Techno Hub” In Jaipur. It will provide free space, easier funding avenues
and mentorship to startups.

August- 25
 Renowned aerospace scientist Dr G Satheesh Reddy, who is scientific adviser to the
Defence minister, has been appointed new chairman of the Defence Research and
Development Organisation (DRDO) for a period of two years.

 For the first time, India's only aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya will be fitted with
a marine hydraulic system to boost the air operations of the ship. Hydraulics technology
uses fluid pressure to power machines.

 Exercise Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Peace Mission 2018, the latest
in 'Peace Mission' series formally started at Chebarkul, Russia. All the 8 member nations
will participate in this exercise.

 Industry chamber Assocham appointed former bureaucrat Uday Kumar Varma as its new
Secretary General. He succeeds DS Rawat who held the position for nearly 14 years.

 Former President Pranab Mukherjee launched the National Electoral Transformation


(NETA) mobile application to rate Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of
Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

 9th edition of Mountain Echoes Literary Festival 2018 was held in Thimphu, Bhutan.
This festival is an initiative of the India-Bhutan Foundation and Siyahi, an Indian literary
agency.
