GAME BASICS [GB]

If you are new to the game, I recommend you to closely study these controls
to familiarise yourself with the game.
CONTROLS
[X Button] - Gun
[Triangle Button] - Choose target
[Circle Button] - Fire missile
[Square Button] - Zoom map (pressure sensitive)
[D-Pad Up] - Order wingman to attack selected target
[D-Pad Left] - Order wingman to disperse and attack air or ground targets
[D-Pad Right] - Allow/Disallow wingman's special weapon
[D-Pad Down] - Order wingman to cover you.
[L1 Button] - Slow down (Hold for Airbrakes)
[R1 Button] - Speed up (Hold for afterburners]
[L2 Button] - Rudder Left
[R2 Button] - Rudder Right
[L3 Button] - Target Circle
[R3 Button] - Change view
[Start Button] - Pause menu
[Select Button] - Cycle between weapons and special weapons
ACE STYLES
Mercenary - An ace who destroys enemy targets that are harmful (red/green)
and also helpless yellow targets such as tents and bunkers.
This ace seeks strength and money.
Soldier - An ace who destroys an equal amount of harmless and enemy
targets. This ace can read the tide of battle
Knight - An ace who destroys all enemy targets are spares all other,
harmless targets. This ace lives for pride and honour.
Mercenaries face the hardest enemies, knights face the easiest enemies.
RADAR/HUD/MAP INFORMATION
All yellow targets are neutral and harmless
All red targets are harmful and must be killed to complete a mission
All green targets are harmful but do not affect your ace style, nor
is killing them necessary.
Hitting any target will get you extra points.
NOTE: The L3 Button (Target Circle) brings up a circle on your screen
which locks on to the first target which passes through it.

INTRODUCTION TO THE GAME [INT]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The events of Ace Combat Zero take place 15 years before the events of
Ace Combat 5 and 10 years before the happenings of Ace Combat 4. Basically,
you start off as a mercenary for hire known as Cipher. During the course of
the game, you learn nothing about your own self, not even your name. The
country of Belka is invading the country of Ustio and have reached their
last stronghold. You are hired by Ustio as a mercenary who eventually
blossoms into an ace known as 'The Demon Lord of the Round Table'.
In true Ace Combat style, you get to decide the fate of everyone around
you while flying as 'Galm 1' with your wingman (Pixy/PJ) as Galm 2.

Paint Schemes
Standard : Default color scheme
Mercenary : Complete Campaign Mode in Mercenary Ace Style.
Soldier : Complete Campaign Mode in Soldier Ace Style.
Knight : Complete Campaign Mode in Knight Ace Style.
SP : Obtained by shooting down certain enemy aces.
"Wingman" : Designated as either "Pixy" (F-15C) or "PJ" (F-16C).

MISSION 01 - Glacial Skies / Operation Crossbow

Recommended Plane: F5-E with QAAM
Recommended Wingman Weapon: XMAA
Location: 2-APR-95, Valais Air Base
This is quite a simple mission as a start of your campaign. All you must do

Order Pixy to Disperse and attack air targets (See controls). Also allow
his special weapons. Press triangle to lock on to an enemy within range
and Circle to fire your missiles. Shoot down the planes as you see fit and
according to which ace style you want to be. That's all you have to do in
this mission.

This is an air-to-air/air-to-ground mission. To takeoff, light the
afterburners and climb to about 3800 feet. Here the takeoff phase ends and
the mission begins. Order Pixy to disperse and attack air targets (I feel
that he is better at air-to-air combat than air-to-ground. Now advance and
attack all the tanks, SAMs, and other targets with missiles, and your
special weapon (I recommend a Rocket Launcher). Destroy the targets as you
see fit. You may also choose wether to attack neutral (harmless) targets
and take the mercenary path, or spare unnecessary targets and take the
knight path. Striking a balance between the two makes you a soldier.

MISSION 03 - The Round Table / Operation Choker One

Location: 20-APR-95, B7R
For this mission you are taken to the strategic airspace of
B7R. Order Pixy, as usual, to disperse and attack air targets. Now apply
your afterburners and head for the cluster of Belkan fighters. Shoot down
eight planes and a Belkan ace squadron will come and attack. This squadron
will be different depending on your ace style:
MERCENARY : Rot Squadron {Typhoon}
SOLDIER : Grun Squadron {FA-18/C}
KNIGHT : Indigo Squadron {JAS-39 C}
Now, allow Pixy to use his special weapons as well. Keep turning as the
aces will be shooting missiles at you very often. Climb to a high altitude
such as 25,000 feet so you can see them. Now target them with your QAAM's
and when you are within range fire two QAAMs at the enemy.

MISSION 04 - Juggernaut / Offensive Campaign No.4101

Location: 24-APR-95, Futuro Canal
This mission contains three groups. You can choose which group to fly
with as they all have different aims.
[04 A] Gelnikos (F-1 - UGB)
Clear out surface artillery, port facilities and the air squadron to clear
out the Futuro Canal
[04 B] Round Hammer (F-1 - UGB)
Take out Belka's Naval Fleet stationed at the canal. This is not a hard
mission. Frigates must only be hit by a missile once to sink, 2 missiles for
destroyers, 3 for cruisers, and 4 for aegis. You may neutralise cruisers
and aegis by destroying their AA guns and SAM's.
[04 C] Costner (F-5E - QAAM)
Order Pixy to disperse and attack air targets as usual and then simply
destroy all enemy planes to complete the mission. You'll unlock the
F-16/C, which will help you alot in the following missions.

To start off with, give the usual order to Pixy, and the systematically
attack all the ground targets. Once you get to drop zone one destroy the
targets there and then proceed to the other two drop zones. I ignored all
aerial attacks until I wiped out the ground forces. After that, concenrate
on destroying the enemy planes in the area. Once these are eliminated,
you complete the mission.

MISSION 06 - Diapason / Operation Constantine

Location: 13-MAY-95, Directus
Order Pixy to disperse and attack all air targets. The majority of targets
are on the ground. Make sure you can see them clearly before firing,
because some are hidden behind buildings. This way you can prevent wastage
of missiles (which you will need in the latter part of the mission.) There
are five sectors which you will need to liberate. Once you have destroyed
all targets and liberated all the sectors, the Gelb squadron (comprised of
two SU-37s) will come and attack. These aces are good at evading missiles,
so fly straight at them and shoot at them with your special weapon and your
missiles. Also order Pixy to use his special weapon to destroy the enemy
fighters. Shoot them down to complete the mission.

MISSION 07 - Bastion / Operation Hell Bound

Order Pixy to attack air targets. The important thing to remember in this
mission is that you do not have to destroy each and every enemy weapon.
You just need to get 16,000 points before time runs out. You may also
return to base to rearm. I recommend you do this if your damage is above
80 percent, you have less than 20 missiles, or 0 special weapons. Now,
systematically destroy most of the enemy artillery on the way to the control
tower. To destroy an 'approach' you must be lined up so that your missile
will go in the hole and not hit the concrete. Now destroy the Control
Tower (6 missiles/constant gun hits). Proceed towards the Ramparts. Destroy
these and everything around them. Now get to the ACC and destroy all the
planes on the ground. You should have a score of more than 12,000 by now.
Destroy some more ground targets or some yellow targets (more points).
Once you get 16,000 points, the mission is accomplished. Even if you
return to base to refuel, follow the same plan.

MISSION 08 - Merlon / Operation Dynamo

This mission contains three groups. You can choose which group to fly
with as they all have different aims.

[08 A] Alpha Team
Neutralise the enemy's defense line. Order Pixy to disperse and attack
air targets. Destroy the gunboats with your gun and then proceed to
attack the other targets. After destroying all targets, you will be told
to fly towards the Allied transport planes. Don't bother doing this. After
5 seconds a short cinematic showing 3 Allied planes being destroyed will
appear. Now you must avoid the laser's beam. Continue South. To evade the
laser's beam, simply apply the airbrakes and make a sharp turn left or right
to evade the laser.
[08 B] Beta Team
Destroy all targets after giving your wingman the usual order. After
destroying all targets, you will be told to fly towards the Allied transport
planes. Don't bother doing this. After 5 seconds a short cinematic showing
3 Allied planes being destroyed will appear. Now you must avoid the laser's
beam. Continue South. To evade the laser's beam, simply apply the
airbrakes and make a sharp turn left or right to evade the laser.
[08 C] Theta Team
The objective here is to shoot down all enemy fighters. There are plenty
of them, so make sure you bring a plane with plenty of missiles as well.
Continue destroying targets until no more targets appear on the map, and
no new ones show up. After destroying all targets, you will be told
to fly towards the Allied transport planes. Don't bother doing this. After
5 seconds a short cinematic showing 3 Allied planes being destroyed will
appear. Now you must avoid the laser's beam. Continue South. To evade the
laser's beam, simply apply the airbrakes and make a sharp turn left or right
to evade the laser.

Here's an excellent tip from DuRay Petersen for the last part of this
mission:
"I have found that if you fly in a zigzag pattern when trying to exit the
combat area in mission 8A, B, or C it is much easier to avoid the laser.
Also never let off the afterburners unless you have to turn hard to avoid
the laser.

MISSION 09 - Sword of Annihilation / Operation Judgement

You will not be able to target in this mission at first because of the
jammers in the area. You must destroy the jammers before going forth and
destroying the laser weapon, Excalibur. This is a little harder than it
sounds because Excalibur itself is not dormant either. It will fire laser
bursts at you. These will be displayed as a red area on your map. You must
stay out of the red area to avoid getting grilled. Fly at top speed towards
the Eastern or Western jammers. Once you get close, point your nose in the
direction of the jammer and fire to missiles or your UGBL to destroy
it. Then head to the next closest jammer and repeat. All the time, you must
avoid the laser bursts from Excalibur. Once you destroy all the
jammers, head towards the weapon itself. Target Excalibur. It will need
eight missiles to destroy. After that systematically destroy all the other
artillery and the smaller laser beamers. In the end, aim 10 missiles at the
mid-section of Excalibur to destroy it. After this, your mission is
accomplished!
Brilliant tip from DuRay Petersen:
"Enter the mission in any plane with FAEB's (from now on they'll be FAE's).
Head directly towards any jammer, preferably the one to the far right or left.
Instead of taking it out right away and risking hits for AA, just drop an
FAE on top of the area. Do the same for the rest of the areas, then head back
to clean up the jammers. Once that's done, you can head for Excalibur itself.
Personally, just because i get tired of dodging them, i would drop an FAE on
every single rail artillery piece I see. This won't destroy them, but
it will make it easier for you to get them the next time around"

No, I'm not joking. Load Pixy with bombs, and you'll see why during the
latter half of the mission. Try and shoot all of the targets as fast as
you can. After five minutes / when you shoot down the bombers, you see
a bright light and the sky turns a ghostly colour. Then comes the sound
of a nuclear explosion and your aircrafts electronics go haywire. A missile
alert message appears on the screen but this is false. Now Pixy becomes your
enemy. Dodge his missiles and keep away from him as you fly towards the
enemy craft. (Now you understand why I warned you not to arm him with QAAMs
or XLAA's!). Destroy the enemy craft to complete the mission.

MISSION 13 - Lying in Deceit / Operation Stone Age

This is another simple and boring mission in which you must achieve 20,000
points. Methodically destroy ground and air targets and order PJ to do
as you like. (PJ, I have seen can also destroy ground targets well.)
Once you get 20,000 points, the mission ends.

MISSION 14 - The Final Overture / Operation Broom

This is a simple mission if you take care of the SAM's. Use your weapons
to destroy the targets on the ground or drop an FAE bomb to take care of
them all. There are also civilian areas here, though, so pick out your
enemies carefully if you want to take the Knight path.

[14 B] Mercury Strike Team


Fly to the first base and destroy all aircraft on the ground at first. Then
destroy those who have taken off. Fly to the second base and do the same
to complete the mission.
[14 C] Jupiter Strike Team
Eliminate 6 jammers to make this mission much easier. Destroy all the
other aircraft and those who are trying to take off from the tunnel while
they are still on the ground.

MISSION 15 - The Talon of Ruin / Operation Valkyrie

Recommended Plane: SU-37 (XLAA)
Recommended Wingman Weapon: XMAA
Location: 25-DEC-95, Unknown Area
Follow the XB-O on radar. Once you are close enough a squadron of aces
(Espada Squadron - J35J and Rafale M) will appear. These two are brilliant
at their evasive manuevers, so I recommend firing only if you get a lock on
at below 250 feet distance. Now you may destroy the XB-O or the SU-37's.
To destroy the XB-O target the guns above and below it (1 missile hit).
After that, destroy the engines, ABMs, and Guns. Use the XLAA's for these.
Now only the cockpit remains. This is a difficult foe since it is located at
the front of the plane. You could fly over the plane and drop an FAE bomb
on it, or come back from around and shoot missiles from the front if you
are not such a good aimer.

MISSION 16 - The Demon of the Round Table / Operation Thunderbolt

MISSION 17 - The Valley of Kings

Location: 31-DEC-95, Avalon Dam
In the ravine, apply full thrust and try to get to the dam as fast as you
can. If you can destroy enemy artillery while you're at it, that's great,
however, I didn't bother doing so except for a few SAMs and some planes
I locked on to with my XLAA's. When you get to the dam, fly in to the
opening that leads underground. Be very careful, because even if you make
a slight mistake you'll touch the walls and die. On the first sector,
destroy as many targets as you can. Even if you can't destroy all of them,
go on to the seond sector and repeat. After killing targets in the third
sector, fly out, make a 360 degree turn. Fly in again and destroy all the
remaining targets in all three sectors and fly out again. Fly in for the
final time and aim at the first V2 control section. Fire two missiles at
it to destroy it and do the same for the remaining to sectors. Fly out
again and the mission is accomplished.

MISSION 18 - Zero / Operation Point Blank

Recommended Plane: SU-37 (XLAA)
Recommended Wingman Weapon: No wingman
Location: 31-DEC-95, Avalon Dam
This mission may seem very challenging at first, but rest assured that you
will be able to complete it in the end. You will start out facing Pixy
head-on. DO NOT fire your XLAA's at him right now because he will evade
them easily. Instead, switch to missiles and fly towards him. When you are
within range, shoot two missiles at him and then try your best to stay
on his tail. Shoot only when you get a good angle though, because you
will have to make use of the same missiles in the other two phases. Shoot
at him 6 times to end the phase. Do the same in phase two, evading the
burst missiles that he is shooting at you till the cinematic.
After the cinematic, you will be facing each other head-on again.
Fire away when you are within range. Then keep flying straight and turn
around whenever you can face him head-on. When you get a lock-on at head
on, immediately shoot and dive up or down because he will also shoot at you.
Shoot six missiles head-on to complete the third and final phase.
Congratulations, Galm 1, your campaign is complete!

SP MISSION - The Gauntlet

This mission is unlocked after you've shot down all the ace squadrons in the
game: Rot, Grun, Indigo, Gelb, Schwarze, Schnee, Silber, Espada, Sorcerer,
Gault & Wizard.
You'll have to defeat 5 ace squadrons, which are chosen randomly except
for Gelb and Espada within the thirty minute time limit. You may return
to base to ressuply and repair your plane. I recommend you use the
Morgan or the Falken for this mission, though even an SU-37 or X-02
will be good enough.
Also, you get the chance to fight the F/A-22A Mobius one on one, instead
of the usual squadron in the final round. However, there are two
requirements to make him spawn:
- You must be playing on ACE difficulty
- Shoot down Espada within one minute.

|A) This question has been posted to death on the GameFAQs message |
|board. Yes, PJ is dead. The flowers next to the bodworky of a plane|
|propped up next to a tree is PJ's grave. The laser that Pixy sends |
|through is plane blows the bottom part of the plane off and it |
|almost certainly made it through to the cockpit. Way back, one |
|of Namco's officials confirmed this, so no more debate for us |
|gamers then. |

|Q) What do the symbols displayed under a plane's name signify? |

|A) The symbols represent the kill tally of a plane. |

|A) Once you complete campaign mode in Hard Difficulty level, you |
| unlock Expert difficulty level. Completing Expert difficulty |
| level unlocks Ace difficulty level, the hardest difficulty level |
| in the game. |

|Q) I'm stuck on one mission. What should I do? |

|A) Read my guide carefully. Follow all the steps I have outlined |
| and try again. If you are stuck at a particular point, try |
| e-mailing me with your predicament or post on the Ace Combat Zero |
| forum for help. And most importantly, keep trying! |

|Q) I want to be a soldier, but I am always a knight or a mercenary!|

|A) Try to to balance it out at the end of each mission. If you are |
| a mercenary after the end of a mission, spare all neutral targets |
| in the next mission so that the bar will slide towards the soldier|
| ace style. Try sparing about half of the neutral targets and |
| destroying half. After mission 14, no neutral targets will appear,|
| so you have till mission fourteen to decide which kind of ace you |
| want to be. |

|Q) Why do I face different ace squadrons on different ace styles? |

|A) Mercenaries, Soldiers, and Knights will all face different |
| enemies. Mercenaries will face the hardest enemy squadrons, while |
| knights will face the easiest foes. Soldiers face harder targets |
| than knights but easier enemies than mercenaries. |
