GAUSSIN ERROR
When a vessel alters course rapidly, the different parts of the ship’s structure cuts the
Earth’s magnetic field at varying rates. This sets up an EMF and therefore an electric
current in the ship’s hull. This current sets up a magnetic field of its own, which
according to Lenz’s law will act in a direction opposite to that of the ship’s swing
which caused it. There is also a short lag in the shift of the induced poles in the ship’s
S.I. structures, because of hysteresis. Due to both these effects, while the ship swings
to starboard the compass deviates to the west. If the ship swings to port, the compass
will deviate to the east. The name of the deviation remains the same for all 360° of
the ship’s swing provided the direction of swing remains the same, but the amount of
the deviation will increase and decrease quadrantally due to the unsymmetrical shape
of the ship. Thus, a rapid swing to starboard produces a -A and -F, while a rapid
swing to port produces a +A and +E. This error is present only while the ship is
swinging and ceases to exist within a couple of minutes of the ship steadying on her
next course. Bearings observed while the ship is swinging should not, therefore, be
relied upon.
