    My name is Eunice Abigail Arcos and I am running for the Dallas City Council

    District 1, which covers the beautiful community of Oak Cliff. Just a little bit about

    where I come from, I was born and raised in the community of Oak Cliff which is the

    heart of Dallas, Texas. I am the youngest of 5 children was only the second in my family

    to attend a university to pursue a bachelor’s degree. My parents originate from Mexico

    City, and they migrated to this country 37 years ago with only a few dollars in their

    pocket and a big dream in mind: to see their future children succeed. I grew up seeing

    my dad wake up every single morning to go out into the street to sell perfumes for a

    living and seeing my mother clean houses until she physically could not anymore. Many

    would say that being a first-generation college student and coming from an extremely

    low-income community has put me at a huge disadvantage, and though they are not

    completely wrong, I would still disagree. These things have been my motor to keep me

    going, even when times have been rough. They have helped give me the ambition and

    motivation to dream big, and work hard towards obtaining any goal I set for myself.

    Throughout my time in Oak Cliff, I have seen this same story repeat itself over

    and over again, and in a sense this is what makes our community so great. We are a

    diverse community, with a population full of different ethnicities, ethnic groups and age

    groups. Now, throughout the years here, I have also seen how our community has

    begun to deteriorate, and developers have taken advantage of this and have begun

    gentrifying our community. Our community is full of history and we cannot allow for

    developers to come in and exploit our community while pushing our citizens aside.

    Property taxes have sparked up tremendously due to the gentrification, and people, who

    like me, were born and raised in this community, are being forced out of their homes
    and family businesses. I believe that we must find a way to ensure that our

    neighborhood continues to be a safe and inclusive one, by protecting our community

    from developments that do not benefit all people from our community. We must

    give our community the opportunity to grow by helping our existing businesses continue

    to flourish, even as new development begins to come in.

    Along with these things, it is beyond important that our community has smart

    developers but that as representatives of this community, we offer our citizens public

    safety and a good quality of life. In order to ensure public safety, we must provide

    resources that benefit all members of the community like mental health, along with

    financial and homelessness services. We must be proactive in investing to reach out to

    all members of our community and educating them on these resources. We must also

    make it a goal to build a bridge between citizens and law enforcement, where our

    citizens feel safe and secure.

    Lastly, it is beyond important to provide a good and high quality of life for all

    community members by offering them resources such as community centers for

    families, where children can learn and grow within their community. We must rebuild

    and make our parks beautiful again so these can be accessible for all growing members

    of our community. Along with making the effort to continue providing a better law

    enforcement that guarantees a safe and low crime neighborhoods.

    These things are beyond important for me, and for Oak Cliff. That is why, if I am

    elected to represent you and the promising town of Oak Cliff, I promise that these three

    things will be my top priority. I stand with the creation of smart development, good

    public safety and the best quality of life any community can offer.
    I am beyond grateful to have the opportunity to serve the beautiful community of

    Oak Cliff and to serve you!
