Miss GLADYS DIGGS, Assistant in the Registrar• s Office at Smith College,
stated the employee received her A.B. degree in June, 1938. She was
awarded her Master's degree in June, 1939. Miss de BIASIO majored in
English. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
She was a ·Neilson Scholar, meaning that she was one of the leading scholars
of her class. She was born in New York City on May 14, 1917.
Her activities included the Italian Club, Press Board and Psychology Club.
!fiss BARBARA CROSBY, Personnel Office, referred to the Faculty Recommendations
File on the employee, which is a composite of numerous faculty recommendations.
It speaks in the highest terms of the employee. She was described as having
keen intelligence, being sensible and realistic and having a due degree
of self confidence. She has a very pleasant a:nd attractive personality
and makes a good appeara,nce. She had unusual init:i.ative and intellectual.
maturity. She is courteous, ambitious and cooperative with others. !ibere
were no criticisms made of her and al1 comments were favorable.
Yrs. BERNICE B. CRONKITE, Dean, Graduate School, Radcliffe College, Cam-
bridge, Massachusetts, reviewed the scholastic record of MARIA WIUIELM
which indicated that the employee attended the Graduate School of Radcliffe
College beginning in the summer term of 1947 until the end of the first
term of the scholastic year 1949-50. Mrs. CRONKI~ stated that. the em-
ployee studied courses in Slavic, Economics and Social Sciences. 1he

Mr. PAUL BROOKS, Director, Houghton and 1.lii'lin Company, 2 Park Street,
Boston, Massachusetts, advised that the employee worked at the Houghton
and Miflin Company on a part-time basis editing and revie?dng various
publications. Ur. BROOKS said that the employee was so employed during
the time she was studying for her Master's degree at Radcliffe College.
Mr. BROOKS was unable to furnish the exact dates when the employee was
'With the Houghton al\d Mi.flin Company. Yr. BROOKS considered the em-
ployee to be a vecy intelligent individual who was we11 recommended to
the Houghton and .Miflin company. He said that she did an excellent job
at the Houghton and Miflin Company and is eligible for rehire. Accord-
ing t~ Ur. BROOKS, he knew the employee and her .husband on a social
basis and indicated that nothing unfavorable or derogatory concerning
them has ever come to his attention. Mr. BROOKS further stated that he
would consider the employee to be a good security- risk and he would
recommend her most ravorably for a responsible position.
Neighborhood
Yrs. MARY T. DILLON, Housewife, 97 School Street, Lexington, Massachu-
setts, advised that she had been a neighbor of the employee and her
husband since May, 1948. Mrs. DILLON said that she and her husband
have visited the employee and her husband socially on numerous occasions
and that the employee appears to be a high-type individual concerning
vlhom she knows nothing which is of a derogatory nature. Mrs. DILLON
said that she had no reason to question the loyalty o! the employee
or her husband and frcm her acquaintance with the employee and her
family, she would be able to recommend her favorably for a responsible
position.

This investigation was conducted under the provisions of Executive

The files a-;t.so J;'eflect that P_assport .Number 28 was issued to the
employee at Habana, Cuba, _on November 30, 1942, under the name of MARIA ANGELA
DE BIASIO for proposed. return to the United State~ within fo'lir days. The ·
application stated that she had been in Cuba s:\,nce November 22, 1942, and was
there on vacation. The employee indicated her employment at _that tilile as an
employee of the Office of War Informati:on.
In connection ·with the ,employee1s 1952 passpQrt application, there
appears an .affidavit executed by the employee subscribed and sworn to on
May 26, 1952, by MARIA DEBLASIO W!IllELM before JAMES H. NOBLE, Notaey Public,
District of Columbia, as follows: · . '

and her husband is s~-t;isfactory based o~ three accounts. These records reflect
that the last credit check was made on June 5, 1951.
The files of the M~tropol1.tan Police Department, Washington, D. C.;
contained no record for the employee or her son. 'lhese files reflect, . however,
that ol)e WA~N WilHEIM, age 23, of 24'6 20th Street, N.W., was arrested three
times in 1941 and once in 1946 for minor ·traf,fic violations and .forfeited the
sums of $5, $10, and $3, respectively. The files indicated that he was warned
for the fourth violation. ·
The files of the United States Park Police Department, the Montgomery
County Police Department at Rockville, Maryland, and the Fairfax County Police
Department at Fair!~, Virglliia, contained no record for the employee., her
husband, or her son.
