Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

• Analyse about microwaves with their properties and applications.

• Analyse different types of wave-guides.


• Classify about different microwave components.

• Understand different type of antenna.

• Analyse the microwave with different type of tubes.

• Analyse the microwave in the field of communication.

Unit I
Introduction to microwaves and waveguides : Introduction to microwaves, Microwave
applications, Classification on the basis of its frequency bands (HF, VHF, UHF, L, S, C, X, KU, KA, mm,
SUB, mm), Rectangular waveguides, Circular waveguides, Mode of waveguide
Unit II
Microwave components : S parameters, H Plane TEE junction, E Plane TEE, E - H Plane TEE,
Applications of Magic TEE, Directional Couplers, Micro waveguide Joints, Bends, Corners, Transitions,
Twists, Irises, Posts, Turning screws, Ferrite devices, Phase shifters, Microwave attenuators
Unit III
Microwave tubes : High frequency limitations of conventional tubes, Construction and working of
Klystron tube, Construction and working of TWT, Backward wave oscillator, Magnetrons
Unit IV
Microwave communication system and microwave antennas : Troposphere and its properties,
Tropospheric duct formation and propagation, Horn antenna, Dish antenna, lens antenna, Slot
antenna, Microstrip antenna
Unit V
Solid state microwave devices : PIN diode, SBD, Tunnel Diode, GUNN diode, Avalanche transit
time devices
Unit VI
Radars : Introduction to radar, Radar applications, radar range equation (no derivation), Block
diagram and operating principles of basic pulse radar, Block diagram and operating principles of CW
(Doppler), Block diagram and operating principles of MTI radar
