CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Nowadays, some students do not know the value of using

English language as a means of communication. As for the reason

that they are Filipino and it is enough to only know the basics of it

according to Robert Wicks. Yet, without them knowing, the English

language were used substantially in every day basis, more over

when it comes to simply counting and using mathematics. Has

anyone thought of what mathematics would be, if they insist on

using their own language for it? According to a study conducted by

New Era University students on their research entitled “Using Filipino

as a Medium of Instruction in Teaching Mathematics: Basis for Policy

Formulation.” It was stated their professors were having a difficult

time, in translating the words from English to Filipino. On contrary,

the students were flexible enough in adapting to Filipino terms, as it

is their native language. (Robust, 2011) Research conducted

theories on how children will learn mathematics to explore how this

theories can be applied to teaching. Resulted a feature in students

“opportunity to learn” efficiency and conceptual understanding must

be involve.

According to the students blog, Sarolt Szeder, Odette Spiteri

and Marcella Tunariu the General English Evening Course students,

they revealed. Why is it important to speak English from the Malta

University Language School. It presents there the reasons on why

speaking English is important, “Speaking English allows you to

actually broaden your world, from job opportunities to the ability to

relate to people from every country… there are more than 400

million native English speakers.” It means that the English Language

is important especially to the Science, Technology, Engineering and

Mathematics students they take their professional courses especially

in college and also this actually means that the English language is

the global language. Learning on how to use it, will essentially

provide opportunities for greater chances in life. Furthermore, based

on the article Effects of English language proficiency on the

academic performance of international students: A USQ study, it

declares there that using English language, the students have been

expanding their capabilities on going overseas, and trying new lives.

According to Racca and Lasaten (2016) In Mathematics, the

students are weak in thinking and spatially.

Therefore, this study aimed to examine about the lived

experiences of STEM students in learning mathematics through the

use of English Language and their perspectives through the process

of a phenomenological research design. At the end of the study, it is

expected to know the experiences that the students have gained,

with their lessons and techniques acquired. So, the researchers are

doing this kind of exploration, in order to broaden their own

knowledge in mathematics, and let the teenagers especially the

STEM students realized, on how their study techniques in

mathematics were affected by the English language.

Significance of the study

This study aims to examine about the lived experiences of STEM

students in learning mathematics through the use of English

Language. It is important to conduct this study in order to: increase

the knowledge of people about mathematics subject using the

English language, understand their beliefs and principles regarding

to this study, produce more effective strategy that can be used by

solving and computing problems properly and create new idea how

to solve the math problem easily and correctly. The effects of this

study are significant to the following:

To those who are taking STEM strand, this will help them to

learn more about their field, improve the skills that they have, and

gain strategies to solve and learn about the concept of mathematics

with the use of English language

To the STEM Teachers, they provide another ways or

strategies to control the student who uses Filipino terms instead

using English Language.

To the future researchers, this study will serve as a guide or

basis and will provide additional information that they might need.

They can also improve and develop this research that we have

conducted.

To the other members of society, this study will help to have

further knowledge about the concept of mathematics. It will also

help the people who belong in the society to be aware about the

differences between using Filipino and English Language in learning

mathematics subject. It will make them more knowledgeable

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDY

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents some local and foreign literature and

studies about the STEM students experiences. Relevance to present

studies gave a big portray why this literature and studies from local

to foreign are used.

The review of related literature is an essential aspect of

investigation. This helps the researcher to gather up to date

information about what has been done in the particular area on

which he intends to study.

LITERATURE

Literature, these are examined articles that were taken from

different, journals, books, articles and websites. The pieces of

information attained helped the researchers in their study. Below are

local and foreign literature that the researchers have used as basis

of this study.

Local. (Gee, 1999) Language used in math classes is constantly

guided by powerful forces that are unseen. These things need to be

open further in order to know more about the other aspects of

teaching and learning mathematics. Rivals that mother tongue

always carries a political element which is related to the access of

social goods that are associated with power.

According to Llaneta (2018) The benefits of children being

taught by using their mother tongue or first language was

recognized by the Department of Education in 2009. Children that

are taught by their mother tongue learn to read, write, and speak

more quickly according to researches internationally and locally. In

the same way they quickly learn particularly in math and science.

According to Tapang (2012) English being the lingua franca

of both commerce and science are points that are often made. The

fluency in using English language is certainly essential from

developing countries mostly where industries are being manage by

foreign entities commonly using English as a medium of

communication. English being the language of education doesn't

mean the students will achieve higher grades in science and

mathematics. The Trends in International Mathematics and Science

Study is a test that have been administered every four years since

1995 it is an important benchmark in for comparing standards in

math and science around the world. The countries that have

achieved high ranks in this test all have basic instruction in their

local tongue. Eight graders in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and

Taiwan together with Singapore are consistently ranked high in

mathematics and science tests. Their basic education are taught

using their local language including math and science, with English

being only a part compulsory curriculum. Ironically, Among the tail-

enders are the United States and the Philippines.

Foreign. Chitera (2011) Countries in Africa introduced their local

languages as the mother tongue of learning for the first few years of

schooling. It means students learn Mathematics in their local

languages. The research must focus on the challenges of

multilingual classes in schools. He said,

some reforms should also take place in Teacher Education

Program in terms of training the prospective teachers how to

teach in local language

According to Johnson (2016) In the past 40 years L2

teachers or second language teachers had changed dramatically by

the way of teaching, learning, and why someone study or teach

English. The variety of English that are being taught ad used around

the world had changed since then.

According to Kersaint et al (2014) claimed that educator’s

addresses that teaching ELLs in their classes is now an issue facing

Mathematics throughout their country. Many states have

experienced an influx of non-English speaking student since the mid

Review of related studies further avoids duplication of effort

that has already been done and it helps the investigator to go

further deep into the problem in hand. It also helps to study the

different facts of the problem. It provides the opportunity of

giving an insight into the methods measures and various other

parameters adopted by other, which would lead to the improvement

of the research design significantly. It is a valuable guide in defining

the problem recognizing its significance suggesting the promising

data gathering devices appropriate study design and source of data.

According to Oxford dictionary, studies is devoting one’s time

and attention to gain knowledge of a specific academic subject,

especially by the use of books.

Furthermore, definition from Merriam Webster Dictionary tells

that it is a cautions analysis or examination of a particular topic,

phenomenon, development and questions.

Local. According to Racca and Lasaten (2016) In Mathematics,

the students are weak in thinking ideally and spatially. Indeed, their

problem-solving skills are poor. The study includes that the students’

delicacies in Mathematics subject is attributed to the students’

adversity in English. All these leads to problem on the students not

to understand what they are analyzing. They have difficulties in

expressing their ideas in verbal and non-verbal form. Obviously, the

skills in English are needed in learning concepts in Mathematics.

They said that the students have struggles in manipulating their

ideas, analyzing problems and applying theory in a given situations.

Generally, students comply that learning language is hard even

though they are using different ways to learn for it. Still they could

not attain proficiency in the language.

These notices related to English language proficiency and academic

performances prompted the researchers to conduct this study.

Specifically, the academic performances of the students in Science,

Mathematics and English.

PRACTICAL RESEARCH 1
According to the study of Paz (2017) In Mathematics,

medium of instruction plays a relevant role in the

teaching-learning process. In the Philippines, mathematics is being

taught in English for years. Unlike other countries like Europe,

universities use their native languages with English as additional

language. They are exhorted to cultivate and develop

multilingualism. But English language has become the main foreign

language used as a means of instruction. However, as in other areas

of knowledge, shifts in emphasis and other changes has been

supported for continual growth of teachers.

According to Rameli (2016) Mathematics has always been

given special attention in school as the nature of the subject is

related to many other fields and disciplines. Besides being perceived

as a tough subject, problems in mathematics learning has also been

related to the lack of regulation skill among students in learning

math.

Foreign: According to Milyutin (2018) imagine throughout your

whole life as a student that only knows how to speak Spanish.

You’re from a rural town in Honduras, the only home you know

suddenly at age six your family moved to United States of America

were signed up for first grade at local elementary school and were

thrown right to an English-speaking classroom. The researchers

receive English language support but what you heard all day long at

school is English. ELLs (English Language Learners) “can participate

meaningfully in schools Educational Program.” According to Federal

Law. Math is challenging subject itself adding language barriers to it

is making success in it unreachable.

Recently, Legislation has game as far to require that districts

use strategies and programs to help ELLs that are backed by

scientific evidence. Teachers may not speak the native language of

the student. Many schools support children to learn English but this

barrier my cost students academically as they fail to grasp concept

in Mathematics, Science and of course language arts.

According to Yushau and Omar (2015) stated that Arabic is

the official language that most universities in Saudi Arabia is using

as medium of instruction. However, most of the universities in Saudi

Arabia are becoming an English medium universities language which

the students are currently acquiring. Usually both the teachers and

students are experiencing problems in teaching and learning

Mathematics due to sudden change in language, despite the fact

that English is being accepted as a language of instruction in many

universities nowadays especially in King Fahd University of

Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM). In their study, most Arabic

students who newly admitted to KFUPM, the first university in Saudi

Arabia to use language of instruction are having difficulties in

Mathematics using the universal language. Also, in the study, they

stated that in order to improve their understanding and performance

they must undergo at least one-year course in preparatory English

at KFUPM. So, they will enhance their skills especially in

Mathematics to understand their study or lessons even better.

METHODS OF RESEARCH

This chapter presents the methods and procedures of research

applied to gather the needed data. It contains the research design,

selection of co-researchers, research instruments, and the treatment

of the data.

Research Design

The researchers used phenomenological research method for

this is the most appropriate process of evaluating the lived

experiences of Stem students in learning mathematics using English

language

To explain Phenomenological Research, Elisha Well W. C. (2015)

claimed that Phenomenological is nutrition education delivered by

Selection of co-researchers

The co-researchers of the study are (3) STEM students who

experiencing learning Mathematics using the language of English

and was chosen through purposive sampling technique. The sample

based from www.thh.nhs.uk should be present the population to

make sure that we can generalize the result from the research

sample to the population as a whole. According to Welton (2018), a

process used in statistical analysis is called sampling. Sampling is a

statistical analysis, a predetermined number of observation are

taken in a population.

According to Crossman (2018), Purposive sampling selects a

sample based on the characteristics of the population and the

objective of the study. This kind of sampling is also a non-probability

sample. It is also called as judgmental, selective, and subjective

sampling. Crossman (2018) also stated that this kind of sampling is

very efficient when getting the targeted sample quickly, where the

sampling proportionality is not the concern.

Research Instrument

The materials and instruments to be used for gathering data

are interview protocol, voice recording, and pictures.

Interview Protocol

The interview protocol will be used to gather data. Interview

provide information which may be confidential that may not

ordinarily be given in writing. Based on Patton (2018) interview

protocol is an interview guide lists the questions or issues that are

not to be explored in the course of an interview. An interview guide

is prepaid to ensure that the same basic lines of inquiry are pursued

with each person interviewed. The guide provides topics or subjects

areas within which the interview and illuminate that particular

subject.

(Patton,2015) added that it serves to remind the interview to

relay important bits of information to the interviewee, such as

stating or (restating) the purpose of an interview, what will happen

to the information obtained and any confidentiality concerns.

personalities and characteristics.

Co-researchers A ----- Mr. Genius

I'm Dominic Anthony D. Bersabe a student from STEM-Lychee.

Mathematics subject is not a bad subject for me and my experiences

on it is that it is not very difficult as long as your experiences in

talking English as your preferred language. The subject involves

difficulties in learning mathematics using English language, are the

terminologist and words in the vocabulary words that you don’t

understand, you don’t know which is difficult specially when

analyzing problems that is mostly use in mathematics. English

language is my preferred language and the Filipino language is the

mostly use language in the Philippines because it’s our national

language, so I think it is common that Filipino is the best language

to be use since this is what we are. English language is fine to me

since this is our universal language and for the current STEM

students, I don’t think the language that we use in learning

mathematics is a problem. It is for you to cope up and understand

this language so that you may learn mathematics since for me

mathematics is not hard subject to learn and understand as long as

you have determination and will to reach your goals. Lastly, for the

upcoming STEM students study hard.

Co-researchers B ----- Mr. Rapper

I like mathematics subject because it practices the cognitive part

of my brain and also at the same time it practices my right side of

the brain or the none creativity part of my brain. Personally, I'm not

part of the generation studied mathematics in our language so I'm

part of the generation who's studied the mathematics subject using

English language. So personally, if we studied English language well

you can also study mathematics in the English language. If you are

not so great or not doing well in English language you cannot

practice English using the universal language as well, so I think

using English for people who are not so good in English language

use much better for them to use or practice mathematics in Filipino

language or in their mother tongue. I think it varies, but in our

country, I prefer using Filipino. I believe that Filipinos are always

much better in using Filipino language inside of the English

language, so as an example I will give Japan, the Japan studies

every subject in their own language and look at Japan they are so

rich, or we considered Japan as perusal country and because they

learn faster than other country. So personally, I prefer that Filipino

language should use in mathematics subject and yes, Filipino

language can make mathematics easier than before. English

language is much better for Filipino. Personally, as I come up with

English language because I do well in English and I can use the

English language as media for communication, do they’re for I can

learn mathematics in English language or in Filipino language, either

of the two. In our current curriculum so mathematics is learnt in

high school or in STEM using English language, I would advise to

the current student to practice English then practice math as well

and practice your learning communication, learning strategies, or

how you learn things then you can learn mathematics easier than

before. To the upcoming STEM students I presume that each and

every one learn or know to how use English, but in the term

curriculum I will say that practice on what you are great at, so if you

good in English practice in English, if you good in Filipino than

practice in Filipino, so you can adjust curriculum in the current

curriculum.

Co-researchers C ----- Mr. Cute

I’m Charles Matthew Garao from STEM-Grapes. I like

mathematics subject. I don’t know why, maybe because it is my

favorite subject in grade 5. Sometimes I can’t understand it when

they are using deep English words. English words are okay but not

the deep words and Filipino can also help to translate those deep

words. I can cope up to our lessons in mathematics using English

language because I have the willingness in the subject. For the

27

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

PRACTICAL RESEARCH 1
current STEM students don’t be pessimistic about the subject of

math and for the upcoming STEM students just study, not because it

is math it doesn’t mean it is hard. You will learn it and it will be easy

for you. Like I said when we talk about math the first thing, we think

about that math is hard, it will become hard when we don’t listen to

our teachers, even we are not good in math we just need to listen to

them so we can catch up, so don’t have a mindset that math is hard

because math can be easy we just need persistence. I’m doing this

when I’m solving problems in math so I can understand it better

because I admit that I’m not good in English even more in the deep

kind of words, so I’m using it to understand the problem or

questions better. So even for me sometimes even our language we

are experiencing hardships in it. We make mistakes in using Filipino

even more if it is a deep word, so for me the difference of math and

English in learning is on how we use them, for example my teacher

wants you to answer “Find the Square-root” there I can understand

it instantly what I must do and it is not a deep word so the work is

much easier to do. I can translate it to Filipino by the help of my

Researchers’ Reflection

The following terms come up from the rigorous analysis of the

gathered data and they were supported with direct quotation from

the co-researchers:

1. Mathematics is not a hard subject. At the current

situation many students are saying that mathematics subject

is one of the hardest subjects in the school. Based on the

study of Wayne (n.d) it is a powerful tool with many

applications, and we call it math. Business, finance, medicine,

engineering, and basic sciences are careers that are led by

advance mathematical trainings. Even math is challenging

sometimes it is worth it by the elegance of the subject itself

and the tremendous sense of accomplishment that can give

us. The people with abstract thinking is the ideal type of

people for the subject of math.

Co-Researcher A answered question by which the mathematics

for him is not a hard subject to learn as he said that “mathematics

Co-Researcher C also stated his perception about mathematics

subject as he said that, “ewan ko kase naging favorite ko siya noong

grade 5.”

“I don’t know why, maybe because it is my favorite subject in

grade 5.”

2. English language as preferred language. English is

a West Germanic language that was first spoken in medieval

England and eventually became a global lingua franca.

According to British study (n.d) the most commonly spoken

language in the world is English. Out of five people can speak

or understand English. Many countries have their official

Co-Researcher B While he stated that, “I do well in English

and I can use the English language as media for communication, do

they’re for I can learn mathematics in English language or in Filipino

3. Filipino language is more convenient to use. As the

researchers asked more questions about the lived experiences

of STEM students, they found out that Filipino language or

mother tongue is one of the easier ways to learn

mathematics.

According to De Guzman (2016) Filipino has a small

vocabulary compared to other languages. By using even just

a single word in Filipino can refer to many things compared to

other languages that will require more complex words for a

specific subject. Filipino is more flexible in grammar you can

use both the subject-verb order and verb-subject order.

Co-Researcher A Recognized his answered as he stated that,

“I think it is common that Filipino is the best language to be use since

this is what we are.”

Co-Researcher B also stated that, “I prefer using Filipino. I

of being able to understand, but not necessarily to understand a

language will make you use effectively and understand more about

your research materials or study materials, present assignments and

write well-structured essays without plagiarism, and develop the

Co-Researcher A said that, “It is for you to cope up and

me mathematics is not hard subject to learn and understand as long as

you have determination and will to reach your goals.”

the study of Goosens (2015) Studying shapes your personality, it

makes ourselves better. Studying make him learn to plan ahead of time

and reduce the things that he will do. The experiences led to this

statement “Find something to look forward to.”

Co-Researcher A advised to the students to make math easier

Statement of the Problem

Precisely, this phenomenological study attempts to explore the

experiences of the selected STEM students in Metro Manila College

regards of being an STEM Students. Specifically, this seeks for a

valid and reliable data to the following question(s);

1. What are the lived experiences of STEM students in learning

Eidetic Insights

Based from the experiences narrated and after thorough

analysis of the data, the researchers hereby present the summary of

findings.

The Students of STEM are the mostly focus in mathematics. It

was found out that the STEM students look at mathematics as a

subject that is not hard. They like mathematics because it practices

their cognitive part of the brain or the part that is use in logical

thinking.

The STEM students prefer English language which is the

language where mathematics is taught. They are good in English

language they have the enough knowledge in using English as a

language for learning.

The STEM students use Filipino as their medium for

communication because Filipino is more convenient to use. They

also use Filipino language because this is what they

are, and Filipinos are always more capable of using Filipino as their

language in communication.

The STEM students can face their problems, they face their

problem with determination and will to reach their goals. They are

also capable in catching up to their lessons not only because they

have enough knowledge but because they have the willingness in

the subject.

The STEM student’s way of learning is simple they just “Study

Hard”. They always look forward in finding a solution to the problem

that they are facing. Studying is the best way of learning something

it is just a simple word, but it means a lot. Bringing up something

that looks or sound hard is not a problem for the students Than

STEM because nothing will be hard if you will study and learn it,

Symbolic Representation

The researchers chose a MATHEMATICAL FORMULAS to be

the symbolism of their study. Researchers can outline co-researchers

as what are the characteristics of mathematics formula. To begin

with, researchers focused on its main function. Mathematics formula

is defined as a group of mathematical symbols that express a

relationship or that are used to solve a problem, or a way to make

something. In similarities, co-researchers are also solving

mathematics problem. A formula is an expression telling the

computer what mathematical operation to perform upon a specific

value. When referring to computer software, formulas are most

often used in spreadsheet programs, such as Microsoft Excel. Using

formulas in spreadsheets can allow you to quickly make calculations

and get totals of multiple cells, rows, or columns in a spreadsheet.

Mathematics subject is not hard if will use or follow the different

mathematical formulas. There are a lot of ways to solve math

problems if has the determination to solve it. English language is the

most common language that we use in learning mathematics. Many

countries have their official language, the number of the countries

that are currently recognized as an English language official is 53.

Moreover, English is also the language in media. As the researchers

investigated the lives of the STEM students. Filipino language is the

national language of the Philippines, that's why it is more convenient

for the co-researchers to use in learning mathematics. Mathematical

formulas helps the students to understand problems, lessons and

explanations. Lastly, if will try to study the different formulas we can

easily analyze or solve different questions that is needed to be

understand in learning mathematics.

Implications

Based on the summary of findings, the following implications

are drawn:

Students are now focusing on how to take the easy path than

the harder one because for their own convenience, students aspire

to be something big but not exerting effort to achieve it they always

think lightly and nearsighted. The STEM students are one of the few

kinds of students that are always looking forward to solving the

problem by themselves and with a little help by others, they cope up

with their own difficulties and be responsible for themselves.

Studying in a path that is mostly using logic left the STEM

students with a will to reach their goal by their own doing. Having

the willingness to finish or achieve something, and always looking

forward to something.

The STEM students not only face difficulties in mathematics

but they also face the problems in the lack of understanding in deep

meaning English words. Using Filipino as a medium of language for

more convenience because it is the language that Filipinos grew up

with and the language describing what they are. Understanding that

not only gives them courage to learn more in the English language

but also gives them the pride of being a hardworking student.

Being a student in STEM does not require fancy learning

methods because the students of STEM primarily only do this one

thing “Study Hard” it is phrase that most of the STEM students do. It

is one of the major things that the STEM students are proud of,

studying hard proves and supports the results the students get and

reflects their own willingness in achieving something.

Recommendation

This part presents a suggestion or proposal as to the best

course of action and to recommend something or someone.

STEM students, the researchers recommend that they look

forward in finding a solution in the problem they are facing in Math

problems. They must have willingness in every task they do.

Students, the researchers suggest that students must not

stereotype the subject Mathematics especially when using it in

English.

STEM teachers, the researcher recommend to review the problems

in Mathematics especially when it is all about analyzing or word

problem. Be considerate if they can not easily understand it.

Future Co-researchers, the researchers urge to the co-

researchers to gather more information about the Lived Experiences

of STEM students in learning Mathematics using the English

language so that they may gain deeper and expand the researchers

study.

DepEd, the researchers urge the Department of Education to pay

attention to the teaching of subjects like Mathematics and Science

that uses complex English words that may be an obstacle in the

learning of the students. They must also think about using Filipino

as a helping language in the teachings of mathematics.
