ECA Technology

11 © Eddyfi
Eddy Current Array Technology
Usually referred to as ECA, this inspection technique uses
several individual coils grouped together in one assembly.

So, in essence, ECA is supercharged ECT.

Single-coil ECT ECA

(slow raster scan) (fast single-pass)

Eddy Current Array Technology
ECA can either be deployed for tubing inspections
or surface inspections:

ECA for Tubing ECA for Surface

Eddy Current Array Technology
A significant advantage of ECA over conventional
eddy current is the imaging provided:

Eddyfi in Action: Applications

26 © Eddyfi
Detecting Corrosion in Aluminum
with ECA Technology
The challenge: Detect and assess corrosion on far side
• Aluminum tank floor, slightly concave

• Thickness 6.35–7.94 mm (0.250–0.313 in.)

• Far side of floor inaccessible: pitting and thinning

The solution: Semi-flexible ECA probe

with Ectane® test instrument and Magnifi® software.

The benefits: Successfully deployed on site.

• Rapid scanning, full data recording/archiving

• Versatile, adapting to curved or irregular surfaces

• High-precision assessment of pitting and thinning

• Easier interpretation with C-scan imaging

Circumferential Cracking in Non-
Ferromagnetic Heat Exchangers

The challenge: detect and size cracks at

tubesheets.
• Circumferential cracking is very difficult to detect
and size with standard bobbin probes

The solution: the DefHi®, a high-

definition multiplexed ECA tubing
probe.

The benefits: very rapid assessment

> 50% on 180° span
of circumferential cracks in the most challenging
location with full 3D imaging for easier interpretation.
