DRUG: RIBAVIRIN
i. CLASS OF DRUG: Ribavirin is used with an interferon medication such as peginterferon alfa-2a or
peginterferon alpha-2b [PEG-Intron]) to treat hepatitis C in people who have not been treated
with an interferon before. Ribavirin is in a class of antiviral medications called nucleoside
analogues.
ii. INDICATION: Ribavirin, also known as tribavirin, is an antiviral medication used to treat RSV
infection, hepatitis C, and viral hemorrhagic fever.For hepatitis C it is used with other
medications such as simeprevir, sofosbuvir, peginterferon alfa-2b or peginterferon alfa-2a.
iii. SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, muscle pain, dry mouth, nausea; vomiting, stomach pain, loss of
appetite, weight loss.
vii. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any you start or
stop using, especially:
azathioprine; or medicines to treat HIV or AIDS.
viii. PREGNANCY RISK FACTORS: Ribavirin can cause birth defects or death in an unborn baby. Do not
use this medicine if you are pregnant, or if you are a man and your sexual partner is pregnant.
Use 2 forms of birth control to prevent pregnancy while either sexual partner is taking ribavirin,
and for at least 6 months after treatment ends.
ix. MOST RUNNING AND FAMOUS BRAND: Rebetol (ribavirin) is an antiviral medication.
Rebetol must be used together with an interferon alfa product (such as Pegasys, PegIntron, Sylatron, or Intron A)
to treat chronic hepatitis C.
