Introduction
Newton's third law is states that for every action, there is an
equal & opposite reaction. The statement means that in every
interaction, there is a pair of forces acting on the two interacting
objects. The size of the forces on the first object equals the size of
the force on the second object.
To begin the experiment, we have to investigate to see the
action that occurs to the balloons. Differentiation of a reaction that
occurs to our balloons will depend on the air that we put in, and
also a length of a straw. We have both short and long size of a
straw which create a different speed of a reaction. The result that
will comeout should be different either in distance or a speed.
Objective
To investigate the action-reaction relationships
Set up
In the physics laboratory
Procedure
1. Tie on end of the rope to the chair
2. Put long and short straws in the rope
3. Tie another end with another chair
4. Blow the balloon, hold it, and tape it to the straw
5. Release the balloon and record the time as it reaches the end
6. Try different size of balloons, string, straws, and angle of the
string.
Analysis
In the experiment, we used different length of straws to see
which one goes further and faster. Shorter straw was faster and
further because there is less surface and less frictional force. The
larger balloon contains more air so it pushed the straw to go faster
and further than smaller inflated balloon. Thinner string is lighter
and made the straw went faster than thicker string.
Answer the following questions briefly and concisely
a. Does the shape of the balloon affect how far (or fast) the Rocket
travels?
Yes, bigger balloon will have more air and more force to push the
straw forward.
b. Does the length of the straw affect how far (or fast) the Rocket
travels?
Yes, because longer straw has more frictional force and slows
down. It makes the distance shorter.
c. Does the angle of the string affect how far (or fast) the Rocket
travels?
Yes, high angle makes the balloon goes further and faster.
d. What do you think is going to happen when you let go of the
balloon opening? • Let go of the balloon, then release its opening. •
Which direction—and how far—did it go? Draw FBD. • Try it again
with the balloon only half inflated (assumed half inflated). How
fast and how far do you think it will go? • What are other ways
you could get a balloon to go faster or slower—or longer or shorter
distances?
The air released by the balloon will push the balloon forward. Half
inflated balloon distance’s will be shorter than big balloon.
According to Newton’s third law which is action = reaction and will
act on opposite direction, if we don’t tape the balloon parallel to
string it will not go in a straight line.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this experiment can be applied to Newton’s
third law. When there is something acting on something, it is called
action-reaction. In this experiment, the balloon is the reaction and
the air release from the balloon is the action in order to push the
balloon. The force when the air pushes the balloon to go forward is
equal the force the balloon releases the air.
Recommendation
Start the timer at the same time as releasing the balloon. Tape the
balloon properly, and also set the table/chair to make it easier for
the experiment.
