Enjoy the Journey!

Mary and I were serving the Pike Avenue Baptist Church in
Birmingham, Alabama when a Montgomery Baptist
congregation, formerly a Methodist Church that looked like a
Synagogue, requested we prayerfully consider becoming
their pastor. On Father’s Day 1987, we began a journey that
impacted us for a lifetime; we joined the precious family of
believers known as McGehee Road Baptist Church. On this
same day, Pastor Winston and Betty Brooks began serving
Neal Hughes Woodley East Baptist Church, and Mike and Connie
Director of Missions Northcutt started at Eastmont Baptist Church. Out of the
three, Mike stayed the longest and served Eastmont for the
past 32 years. Mike and Connie will retire on June 16. MBA Welcomes Summer Missionaries!
In the journey, Mike and I have served on various committees and boards together,
including the Baptist Health Board of Directors. I remember a trip we were doing
business on behalf of the Baptist Health System. On the long plane ride, I sat down
next to Mike and began talking. He listened so patiently and wisely. After I went
on for about five minutes, Mike, in his winsome way, said, “Neal, if you’re going to
sit and talk, let me put my hearing aids in.”
Mike and Connie and their family have given their lives to build and strengthen a
great Church. Through the years, the DNA of Eastmont’s evangelistic spirit has
spilled over into our community with their famous block parties, dramas, and
musicals. A staff of many has led Eastmont. At the helm was a humble giant, Hendi Barrera Lidia Barrera Caleb Browne Jackson Cole

Three things we can learn from the Northcutts as they retire and move on to their
next steps of ministry:
1. Enjoy Life - Mike loves to tell a joke, laugh at your jokes, and enjoys playing
jokes on others. Whether from the pulpit or the parlor, Mike is always “Mike.” He
enjoys smiling and encouraging others with a pleasant sense of humor. Keep in
mind the following verse, “laughter doeth well like medicine” (Proverbs 17:22).
2. Enjoy Each Other - Though married for a long, long time, Mike and Connie are
still like newlyweds. Their relationship to Eastmont is that way, too. You can’t
spend 32 years in one place without enjoying each other. Let’s work harder at Katherine Fair Arkaysia Hampton Faith Hand Anne Louise Pass
