(A Reading Program for Grade 4)

WHAT IS IT?
It is a classroom activity designed to promote the love and habit of reading in Grade 4
pupils. It is a 31-day reading marathon held at your school. Your Grade 4 pupils will take part
in a fun and fast-paced race to read the most number of books during this period. The
storybooks can be solicited from a foundation or your school can also provide these books.
Sixty storybooks will be used during the reading marathon.
Why 31 days in particular? Studies show that any activity done regularly at least 21
times becomes a habit. So guess what happens when pupils read at least one book a day for 31
days?
Why Grade 4 pupils in particular? By the time pupils reach Grade 4, they have begun
to read comfortably. At this age, they can understand, interpret, and appreciate what they’re
reading. This makes it easier for children to form strong reading habits.
STORYBOOK COLLECTION
Storybooks should exhibit Filipino values and are considered by Grade 4 pupils to be
reader-friendly.
It is made up of 60 children’s storybooks published in the Philippines. These are what

the pupils will read during the reading marathon. Decide with your school head which hour of
the school day should be considered “reading time”. This will run throughout the whole
reading marathon period. The pupils may select freely any storybook from the collection to
read.
Number each book from 1 to 60 at the upper right hand corner of the cover. This is a
good way of keeping the books from getting lost. To ensure that the books last a long time,
cover the books with plastic. You may ask your parents to help you do this. Don’t allow your
pupils to take the books at home.
READING PROGRESS CHART
It is a sheet of paper that tracks the reading achievement of each pupil during the
marathon. Teachers should write down the names of all their pupils on the chart. During the
marathon, the pupils themselves may record their progress on the chart by coloring the box
that represents the book they’ve just read.
Give each pupil time to look for his/her name in the chart and color the box that
corresponds to the books he or she just read. Pupils may also use crayons, soft-tip markers or
cut-up/punched out colored paper to shade the boxes in the chart. It will appear like a line
graph.
READING PASSPORT
It is a teacher-made evaluation for the pupils’ understanding of the story. It should

contain questions that will help the pupils have a better understanding of the storybooks. The
reading passport gives each student a place where he or she can respond to the storybooks he
or she has read. It may require pupils to draw, create, and imagine. The teacher must sign each
reflection at the end of each reading time.
Don’t grade the reading passports. Allow them to express themselves without fear of
judgment. Reading should always be a fun experience, not a stressful one.
IBONG ADARNA MURAL AND PAPER FEATHERS
It is a motivational tool that will get the entire school excited about the Reading
Program. Each time a pupil finishes reading a storybook and after you’ve processed their
reading, he or she fills out a paper feather and tapes it to the ibong adarna mural (printed in
tarp.). The more books read the more feathers the ibong adarna gets!
Have your pupils cut out paper feathers in various colors. It should contain spaces for
the title of the story, the author of the story, the illustrator and the name of the pupil. Display
the ibong adarna mural in a prominent area of the school for everyone to see. It should be low
enough for participating pupils to stick feathers onto the mural.
CULMINATING ACTIVITY
This event showcases the pupils’ learning from the storybooks as well as their talent
and creativity. Pupils may present storybook-based skits, dramatizations or plays, song and
dance numbers, an art and poetry exhibit and other presentations. You can also give awards to
the best readers and implementers of the reading program. Make the event short and simple
but imaginative and fun.
Involve parents, teachers and other pupils, sponsors and the rest of the community.
This is a great way to get everyone to support the Reading Program, now and in the coming
years. But remember, your Grade 4 pupils should be the stars of the show.
