The Philippines is prone to multiple hazards and education sector is one of the most
vulnerable sectors during emergencies resulting to children’s deprivation of night to a continuous
quality basic education in a safe environment. The Department of Education as a member of the
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has been building the
resilience of Education by advancing school safety and strengthening disaster prevention,
mitigation and preparedness to address vulnerability of children inside and outside the school.
Children of different ages and grade levels can play an important role in preparing schools and
themselves against future disasters. Being identified a one of the vulnerable groups, they should be
armed with the capacity on how to make appropriate response before, during and after occurrence
of risk, hazard, and disasters.
Maddela Integrated School of Arts and Trades conducted the 2019 Brigada Eskwela from May
20-25 with the theme: “Matatag na Bayan para sa Maunlad na Paaralan” as mandated by the
Department of Education. Among the guidelines stipulated in the memorandum, school safety and
preparedness was given emphasis and importance. i i.e. to ensure safety and preparedness of school
children and personnel on, during and before emergencies.
Prior to the opening of classes, with the collaboration of efforts of pupils, student teachers,
parents and other stakeholders, there were monitoring and evaluation done guided by the Safety
and Preparedness guidelines/checklist. Having a friendly and safe-learning environment for the
Filipino children as one of the main goal of the Department of Education, it is envisioned to uplift
the knowledge and skills of the learners and teachers in order to capacitate the vulnerable group
and minimize the impacts of unexpected hazards. At the moment, this is being done by equipping
the learners on the “what to do’s” during and after emergency
